The use of topical corticosteroides in the treatment of oral lichen planus in Spain: A national survey
2017
Background Explore the treatment of oral lichen planus with topical corticosteroids by the healthcare professionals in Spain. Material and Methods A questionnaire targeted health professionals who treat OLP, in particular maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologist and dentist. The dissemination of the questionnaires was conducted through professional associations and dental and medical societies. The questionnaire was previously evaluated by means of a cognitive pre-test procedure to ensure that the questions were opportune and appropriate, understandable and acceptable among the professionals. Results Of the 890 questionnaires sent a total of 190 questionnaires were answered by 90 dentists, 60 …
Immunoadsorption with tryptophan columns: A therapeutic option for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with septic complications
2009
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting multiple organs and tissues. Although there is a wide range of therapeutic applications, the coexistence of severe side effects and contraindications outlines the necessity of new therapeutic options in the treatment of severe RA. We report on the case of a 71-year-old patient with successful treatment of a complicated RA with tryptophan immunoadsorption combined with low-dose steroids. Bacterial spondylitis developed in this patient during long-term treatment with infliximab and methotrexate. Weekly immunoadsorption sessions with tryptophan columns resulted in continuous suppression of RA activity over a perio…
Ovicidal Activity of Maternally Applied Ecdysteroids in the Large Milkweed Bug (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae)
1982
Exogenous ecdysteroids (ecdysone, 20-hydroxyecdysone and makisterone A) administered to reproducing females of Oncopelus fasciatus (Dallas) reduced egg hatch drastically. The ovicidal activity apparently stemmed from ecdysteroids—unchanged hormone or metabolites—transferred from mother into oocyte. Different stages of embryogenesis were affected. Makisterone A, the predominant ecdysteroid in normal embryos, is by far the most effective ecdysteroid.
Darstellung und Reaktionen von 2-Methylen-canrenon
1995
Synthesis and Reactions of 2-Methylene-canrenone Starting from the Mannich salt 1 of the aldosterone antagonist canrenone or from 2-methy…
Social control of testicular steroidogenic capacities in the Siamese fighting fishBetta splendens Regan
1987
Male Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens Regan) of the veiltail variety were raised. At the age of 4 ½ months they were either isolated or community-housed for 2 ½ months. After that time the relative fin lengths were determined, and the in vitro metabolism of testosterone by the testes of the fishes was investigated. Community-housed specimens had shorter fins than the isolated males. Their testes formed less 11-oxy- and more 5β-steroids than those of the isolated males. This difference was even larger when high- and low-ranking community-based specimens were compared. The appearance of low-ranking males resembled that of females, and the main products of their testes were 5β-reduced st…
Preliminary identification and quantification of steroid hormones in the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus
2012
In the present preliminary study, we used a gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) method to identify and quantify steroid hormones, their precursors and metabolites in whole body of red palm weevil (RPW) R. ferrugineus adults. We identified a total of seven steroids by single ion monitoring mode (SIM) analysis and compared them to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. The steroids include: dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), estrone, estradiol-17β, testosterone, progesterone, cortisol and cholesterol, whereas pregnenolone, pregnan-20-one-17-hydroxy and corticosterone were not detected. This study shows that some invertebrate groups seem to use partially or tot…
Chorioretinopathia serosa centralis (CSC) und Kortikosteroide
2008
Background Corticosteroids are under suspicion of playing an important role in the development of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Patients and methods In a prospective study the course of CSC was evaluated in a consecutive series of 46 patients, who received the diagnosis of CSC in the period 4 / 2004 - 12 / 2005. Data analysis was focused on the complete medical and ocular history and the ocular course of this disease. Results 27 patients had been taking exogenous corticosteroids (oral, intravenous, inhalative, cutaneous and intraarticular) within 4 weeks before onset of symptoms. Additionally, one case with Cushing's disease and 2 pregnant women were included. These 30 / 46 patien…
Seasonal Variations on the Cortisol Concentration of the Subretinal Fluid in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
1981
Probes of the subretinal fluid were obtained from 115 nonselected retinal detachments, operated on during the period from November 19, 1973 to December 20, 1974. All patients had no known endocrine abnormalities and had not ever received topical or systemic corticosteroid therapy. Subretinal fluid Cortisol was determined by competitive protein binding analysis. A statistically significant increase in mean subretinal fluid Cortisol concentration was found for the winter season (3.3 µg/100 ml), as compared with the summer months (1.5 µg/100 ml). This finding sharply contrasts with the seasonal incidence of the idiopathic retinal detachments which reaches its maximum in the months June to Augu…

Mometasone furoate delivered via Breezhaler and Twisthaler in patients with asthma
2019
Introduction: Mometasone furoate (MF), an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), is approved for the treatment of asthma. Previous studies suggest that MF Twisthaler® doses of 800 and 200 µg and MF Breezhaler® doses of 320 and 80 µg would elicit similar lung function effects, respectively. These MF doses are also used in an indacaterol/MF combination in development for asthma. Since sensitivity to ICS is variable, individual patients’ ICS sensitivity (as measured by FEV1 decline on ICS weaning) was used to build a robust analysis model for the study data. Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group, non-inferiority study of 739 adolescents and adults with asthma. MF wa…
