Analysis of blood flow in one dimensional elastic artery using Navier-Stokes conservation laws

2017

Identifying wave and turbulence components in wind-driven shallow basins

2012

Wind-induced waves play an important role in shallow lake hydro- and sediment dynamics. That is why field measurements are important for the validation of their estimation methods, especially in shallow waters. In the first part of the present paper a method is introduced to improve the interpretation of the measured data, applicable both for pressure and velocity data. Replacing the turbulence-affected tail of the measured spectrum with a fitted power function causes a considerable 8-10% difference in the derived bulk wave parameters so this procedure is worth to be done. In the second part an appropriate technique to obtain wave features from 3D velocity time series will be described. The…

Fluid–structure interaction of downwind sails: a new computational method

2018

The spreading of high computational resources at very low costs led, over the years, to develop new numerical approaches to simulate the fluid surrounding a sail and to investigate the fluid–structure interaction. Most methods have concentrated on upwind sails, due to the difficulty of implementing downwind sailing configurations that present, usually, the problem of massive flow separation and large displacements of the sail under wind load. For these reasons, the problem of simulating the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) on downwind sails is still subject of intensive investigation. In this paper, a new weak coupled procedure between a RANS solver and a FEM one has been implemented t…

On the convergence of a finite volume method for the Navier–Stokes–Fourier system

2020

Abstract The goal of the paper is to study the convergence of finite volume approximations of the Navier–Stokes–Fourier system describing the motion of compressible, viscous and heat-conducting fluids. The numerical flux uses upwinding with an additional numerical diffusion of order $\mathcal O(h^{ \varepsilon +1})$, $0<\varepsilon <1$. The approximate solutions are piecewise constant functions with respect to the underlying polygonal mesh. We show that the numerical solutions converge strongly to the classical solution as long as the latter exists. On the other hand, any uniformly bounded sequence of numerical solutions converges unconditionally to the classical solution of t…

Penetration efficiency of nanometer-sized aerosol particles in tubes under turbulent flow conditions

2012

Abstract In order to quantify losses of nanometer-sized particles in turbulent flows through tubes, their penetration efficiencies were measured as a function of the particle size, Stokes number and Reynolds number. The penetration efficiency of tungsten oxide and ammonium nitrate particles with diameters between 3 and 17 nm was investigated in turbulent flow conditions with Reynolds numbers (Re) extending from 4500 to 10,500. The measured penetration efficiencies in straight tubes were found to deviate from the empirical correlation of Lee and Gieseke (1994) . In contrast, the empirical equation of Fan and Ahmadi (1993) agrees better with our experimental results, also in comparison with t…

Frequency-dependent hydrodynamic interaction between two solid spheres

2017

Hydrodynamic interactions play an important role in many areas of soft matter science. In simulations with implicit solvent, various techniques such as Brownian or Stokesian dynamics explicitly include hydrodynamic interactions a posteriori by using hydrodynamic diffusion tensors derived from the Stokes equation. However, this equation assumes the interaction to be instantaneous which is an idealized approximation and only valid on long time scales. In the present paper, we go one step further and analyze the time-dependence of hydrodynamic interactions in a compressible fluid on the basis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equation. The theoretical results show that the compressibility of the…

Derivation of Models for Thin Sprays from a Multiphase Boltzmann Model

2017

We shall review the validation of a class of models for thin sprays where a Vlasov type equation is coupled to an hydrodynamic equation of Navier–Stokes or Stokes type. We present a formal derivation of these models from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary mixture: under suitable assumptions on the collision kernels and in appropriate asymptotics (resp. for the two different limit models), we prove the convergence of solutions to the multiphase Boltzmann model to distributional solutions to the Vlasov–Navier–Stokes or Vlasov–Stokes system. The proofs are based on the procedure followed in Bardos et al. (J Stat Phys 63:323–344 (1991), [2]) and explicit evaluations of the coupling term…

Determination of molecular mass, Stokes' radius, frictional coefficient and isomer-type of non-denatured proteins by time-dependent pore gradient gel…

1988

Molecular mass, Stoke's radius, frictional coefficient and isomer-type of non-denatured proteins can be obtained by time-dependent gradient gel electrophoresis by evaluating the resulting data using a two-step mathematical procedure. Provided a histochemical staining procedure is available to locate the position of an enzyme in the gel, crude cell extracts can be used for estimating their molecular size properties. The computation of molecular properties of non-denatured proteins is demonstrated for isozymes of aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1), peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.42) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) from current-year needles of spruce. The resulting data as well…

Direct numerical simulations of creeping to early turbulent flow in unbaffled and baffled stirred tanks

2018

Abstract It has been known for a long time that the fluid flow and several global quantities, such as the power and pumping numbers, are about the same in baffled and unbaffled mechanically stirred vessels at low Reynolds numbers, but bifurcate at some intermediate Re and take drastically different values in fully turbulent flow. However, several details are not yet completely understood, notably concerning the relation of this bifurcation with the flow features and the transition to turbulence. In order to shed light on these issues, computational fluid dynamics was employed to predict the flow field in two vessels stirred by a six-bladed Rushton turbine at Reynolds numbers from 0.2 to 600…

π-Extended Pyrene-Fused Double [7]Carbohelicene as a Chiral Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon

2019

A π-extended double [7]carbohelicene 2 with fused pyrene units was synthesized, revealing considerable intra- and intermolecular π–π interactions as confirmed with X-ray crystallography. As compared to the previous double [7]carbohelicene 1, the π-extended homologue 2 demonstrated considerably red-shifted absorption with an onset at 645 nm (1: 550 nm) corresponding to a smaller optical gap of 1.90 eV (1: 2.25 eV). A broad near-infrared emission from 600 to 900 nm with a large Stokes shift of ∼100 nm (2.3 × 103 cm–1) was recorded for 2, implying formation of an intramolecular excimer upon excitation, which was corroborated with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, 2 revea…
