Nuclear entry and egress of parvoviruses.

2022

Parvoviruses are small non-enveloped single-stranded DNA viruses, which depend on host cell nuclear transcriptional and replication machinery. After endosomal exposure of nuclear localization sequence and a phospholipase A2 domain on the capsid surface, and escape into the cytosol, parvovirus capsids enter the nucleus. Due to the small capsid diameter of 18–26 nm, intact capsids can potentially pass into the nucleus through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs). This might be facilitated by active nuclear import, but capsids may also follow an alternative entry pathway that includes activation of mitotic factors and local transient disruption of the nuclear envelope. The nuclear entry is followed b…

IP 3 signalling regulates exogenous RNA i in C aenorhabditis elegans

2015

RNA interference (RNAi) is a widespread and widely exploited phenomenon. Here, we show that changing inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) signalling alters RNAi sensitivity in Caenorhabditis elegans. Reducing IP3 signalling enhances sensitivity to RNAi in a broad range of genes and tissues. Conversely up-regulating IP3 signalling decreases sensitivity. Tissue-specific rescue experiments suggest IP3 functions in the intestine. We also exploit IP3 signalling mutants to further enhance the sensitivity of RNAi hypersensitive strains. These results demonstrate that conserved cell signalling pathways can modify RNAi responses, implying that RNAi responses may be influenced by an animal's physiology…

Åsgårdstrand kuvissa ja mielikuvissa

2016

Myöhemmin myös monet Munchin taiteesta kiinnostuneet taiteilijat ja tutkijat ovat hakeutuneet Åsgårdstrandiin – heidän joukossaan brittiläinen nykytaiteilija Tracey Emin (s. 1963), jonka teoksen Homage to Edvard Munch and All My Dead Children (1998) voi mieltää feminiiniseksi kommentiksi Munchin rakkausteemalle. Artikkelissa taiteen ja kulttuuriympäristön suhdetta lähestytään Munchin ja Eminin Åsgårdstrandiin sijoittuvien kuvien ja tekstien…

Usefulness of biomarkers as intermediate endpoints in health risks posed by occupational lead exposure

2015

The article concerns potential harmful effects of exposure to lead. Although the occurrence of severe lead poisoning has receded in several countries, occupational exposure resulting in moderate and clinically symptomatic toxicity is still common. An earlier and precise characterization of an individual response is obligatory in order to assess the possible risks for human health. Biomarkers may fill important gaps in the path from exposure to a disease. Specifically speaking, emerging (DNA double strand breaks and telomeric DNA erosion) and validated (micronuclei induction and chromosomal aberrations) biomarkers of genotoxicity seem to provide evidence for the assessment of molecular and c…

Dal mare al museo. Il recupero di uno scheletro di stenella striata, Stenella coeruleoalba (Meyen 1833)

2022

In 2021, the Museum of Zoology “P. Doderlein” of the University of Palermo acquired a new specimen, the complete skeleton of Stenella coeruleoalba, a striped dolphin stranded in 2018 in Marinella di Selinunte, Castelvetrano (Sicily, Southern Italy). The project herein described is the result of a collaboration among the Bio-Reconstruction Laboratory of the IAS-CNR of Capo Granitola, the IZS of Palermo, the company Naturaliter and the Museum of Zoology “P. Doderlein”. In Natural History Museums, cetaceans are an excellent tool to facilitate scientific dissemination aimed at the conservation of marine biodiversity. The work herein described is presented as an example of good practices in reco…

Data from: Fishing pressure impacts the abundance gradient of European lobsters across the borders of a newly established marine protected area

2018

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are considered as viable fisheries management tools due to their potential benefits of adult spillover and recruitment subsidy to nearby fisheries. However, before-after-control-impact (BACI) studies that explore the biological and fishery effects of MPAs to surrounding fisheries are scarce. We present results from a fine-scale spatial gradient study conducted before and after the implementation of a 5km2 lobster MPA in southern Norway. A significant non-linear response in lobster abundance, estimated as catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) from experimental fishing, was detected within two years of protection. After 4 years, CPUE values inside the MPA had increased by…

Cross-reactivity of anti-ssDNA antibodies with heparan sulfate in patients with type I diabetes mellitus

1989

Anti-single-stranded–DNA antibodies cross-reactive with heparan sulfate were detected in serums of patients with type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. The results suggested that heparan sulfate, the major glycosaminoglycan constituent of the glomerular basement membrane, may serve as a target antigen in vivo for cross-reactive anti-DNA antibodies. These polyreactive antibodies, directed toward repeating negatively charged units, may neutralize the heparan sulfate–associated polyanionic sites in the glomerulus, leading to an abnormal permeability of anionic plasma proteins.

[Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (Grönblad-Strandberg syndrome) and rheumatoid arthritis].

1990

A 72-year-old woman, not previously known to have coronary heart disease, was admitted to hospital with an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. The history revealed that, when about 40 years of age, a coarse skin-fold and yellowish-white xanthoma-like efflorescences had been noted around her umbilicus, the inguinal regions and axillae. These changes subsequently developed into a pathognomonic picture of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PE), which was a significant factor in the myocardial infarction. At the age of 69 years, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), stage II after Steinbrocker, had been diagnosed on the basis of morning stiffness, symmetrical arthritis in more than three joint regions and t…
