Busyness of audit committee directors and quality of financial information in India

2016

The audit committees, as a part of the internal corporate governance mechanisms, play an important role to enhance the financial reporting quality. The busyness of audit committee members of a firm in boards and committees of other firms can affect its independent functioning, ceteris paribus. The current study examines, first, the association between multiple directorships of audit committee members and quality of financial reporting in India, second, whether endogenously determined busyness limits of busyness of the audit committee members provide better insights than those exogenously mandated by regulators. The study finds that endogenously determined busyness limits of sub-samples and …

Effect of partner–agent model practice on microinsurance client value: Insight from microfinance institutions in Tanzania

2018

In absence of formal microinsurance to protect low-income people against natural and man-made disasters, the partnership between insurance companies and microfinance institutions (MFIs), also known as the Partner–Agent Model (PAM), is gaining global recognition from governments, practitioners, and donors for its potential role to deliver microinsurance. Although the model is still nascent in Tanzania, it has significantly increased microinsurance outreach. However, while the microinsurance landscape has been extensively studied, the effect of PAM practice on mandatory microinsurance client value has not received much attention. Therefore, this study examines how the PAM practice affects mic…

Measuring and reporting confiscated firms' (social) business value

2019

This study highlights the peculiar aspects of the business valuation process involving firms confiscated from the Mafia organisation, by pointing out some criteria to guide the selection of the appropriate valuation method. We identify some preliminary operational proposals for drawing up an effective valuation report taking social and ethical factors into account. Based on an empirical analysis carried out on a sample of Italian firm valuation reports publicly available, we find that the main business valuation choices are not explained in an in-depth manner and that there are many differences between the valuation reports and the prescriptive content proposed. Theoretical implications may…

Asimismo, se apuntan algunas recomendaciones a la hora de desarrollar comunicaciones de marketing mediante advergames, así como las cuestiones éticas y morales que deben considerarse

Internal and External Hiring

2019

Using large-scale, linked, employer–employee, Finnish panel data, the authors examine firms’ internal versus external hiring decisions more comprehensively than has prior literature. The results show that vacancies in job hierarchies are filled more often by horizontal moves than by promotions. Most horizontal moves are external and within the same job functions, so that internally promoted workers face external competitors occupying higher job levels. Compared to internally promoted workers, external and internal horizontal hires have stronger observable ability indicators (e.g., education, experience, prior work history) but weaker job performance in the year preceding the transfer. Inter…

Organizing for What: Job Rotation as an Organizational Development Strategy or as an Organizational anti-Corruption Tool?

2021

The purpose of this article is to understand if Job Rotation (JR)/Organizational Development (OD)-oriented strategies are compatible with JR strategies to curb Organizational Corruption (OC), as these strategies seem to indicate an apparent contradiction. To this end, the paper is structured as follows. Firstly, the main points of JR-Theory in organizational studies are displayed. Subsequently, JR-Theory in organizational anti-corruption is more deeply explored. At the end of the review, the research question is proposed in the methodological section. The two sections after that are devoted to answering this question. The first of which examines the laws and documents of the National Anti-C…

The initial sample, obtained using reproducible search algorithms on Scopus and Web of Science, comprises 65 papers. After applying five inclusion/exclusion criteria supported by previous systematic reviews, the final sample consists of 30 papers. Findings: This article demonstr…

Ecosystem services mapping and assessment for policy- and decision-making : Lessons learned from a comparative analysis of European case studies

2020

This paper analyses and compares a set of case studies on ecosystem services (ES) mapping and assessment with the purpose of formulating lessons learned and recommendations. Fourteen case studies were selected during the EU Horizon 2020 “Coordination and Support Action” ESMERALDA to represent different policy- and decision-making processes throughout the European Union, across a wide range of themes, biomes and scales. The analysis is based on a framework that addresses the key steps of an ES mapping and assessment process, namely policy questions, stakeholder identification and involvement, application of mapping and assessment methods, dissemination and communication and implementation.
