Finnish and German student teachers’ motivations for choosing teaching as a career : The first application of the FIT-Choice scale in Finland
2019
This study introduces and validates the Finnish version of the FIT-Choice scale and uses the scale to explore Finnish undergraduate students' motivations for choosing teaching as a career as well as their perceptions of teaching as a profession in comparison to German student teachers. The results replicated the FIT-Choice structure both in Finland and Germany. Sample comparisons revealed that motivations for teaching and perceptions of the teaching profession reflected both differences and similarities between Finland and Germany. The study offers novel information on student teachers’ motivational structure. peerReviewed
First year chemistry experience : kokonaisvaltainen hyvinvointi kemian opiskelun perustana
2016
Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ensimmäisen vuoden kemian opiskelijoiden motivaatiota kemian opiskelua kohtaan tarkastelemalla vuosien 2012 - 2015 Alkukeitos-kurssin lomakkeiden vastauksia. Niistä poimittiin syitä kemian opiskelun aloittamiselle ja pohdittiin näiden vaikutusta motivaatioon opiskella kemiaa. Lomakkeiden vastauksista kerättiin myös aloittaneiden opiskelijoiden odotuksia kemian opinnoista ja verrattiin näitä keväällä 2016 ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoille suoritetun kyselyn vastauksiin. Kyselyn vastausten avulla pyrittiin määrittämään vastaavatko kemian ensimmäisen vuoden opinnot opintonsa aloittaneiden odotuksia, kokevatko ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijat opintonsa motivoiviksi ja o…

Predicting Change in Middle School Students’ Leisure-Time Physical Activity Participation: A Prospective Test of the Trans-Contextual Model
2020
We applied the trans-contextual model (TCM) to examine the effects of middle school students’ perceived autonomy support from their physical education (PE) teachers on autonomous motivation toward PE in school and, critically, autonomous motivation toward, and actual participation in, leisure-time physical activity (PA). The research adopted a three-wave prospective design enabling the modeling of change in the TCM constructs over time. Middle school students (N = 248) aged from 12 to 16 years reported their perceived autonomy support, autonomous motivation in PE, autonomous motivation toward leisure-time PA, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC), intentions for PA…
Effect of self-determined motivation in physical education on objectively measured habit physical activity : a trans-contextual model
2019
Grounded in the trans-contextual model, the purpose of the present study was to examine the role of self-determined motivation in Physical Education (PE) on self-determined motivation in Physical Activity (PA), PA intention, and accelerometer-measured habitual PA behavior among high-school aged adolescents. A sample of 394 Spanish high-school students (211 males and 183 females; aged 12-16 years) participated in the present study. The outcome measure of PA was established using accelerometry, whereas motiva- tion toward PA and PE as well as PA intention were measured using validated questionnaires. Path analyses supported in part the central propositions of the trans-contextual model. Self-…
Main features of an ideal learning space : a user-based description
2014
This paper presents a method to define an ideal learning space from a key user perspective. The target group, upper secondary school students in a Finnish city, was addressed through two online surveys. In these we sought to establish the features that the students considered to be most important in a learning space. The aim was to adapt the redevelopment of school premises to the users’ cultural practices. Two survey methods were employed in the surveys. In the first, students described in their own words what makes an ideal learning space. In the second, students assessed a list of 21 features using a three-point scale. They also assessed a list of 19 learning space factors in terms of th…
Exploring Teachers' Motivation for Teaching and Professional Development in Ethiopia : Voices from the Field
2015
Teachers’ work, learning, and professional development are central to any effort aiming at improving schools. This article explores teachers’ motivation for teaching and professional development in secondary schools in Ethiopia. Data were collected via interviews and focus group discussions from 32 teachers. The analysis of the collected information revealed low salary and the absence of link between performance and reward as major motivational challenges for teachers. The identified motivational challenges wer…
Ylioppilastutkinnon, tavoiteorientaatioiden ja muiden motivaatiotekijöiden yhteys luokanopettajakoulutukseen hakeneiden menestymiseen VAKAVA-valintak…
2019
