2022
This chapter, trying to imagine a reversal of the conditions of marginality or disincentives to the participation of subjects with mental suffering, deals with the pioneering case of the Cooperativa Solidarietà in Palermo. Specifically, among the experiences carried out by its members, the Vivaio Ibervillea, in which people with mental suffering have been working and self-actualising together with other citizens and professionals for many years, is considered particularly significant. The parameters that we take into consideration, in an exploratory key, to define whether or not this case can be considered a good practice, include some elements that are also analysed in other case studies i…
Grounding social criticism : from understanding to suffering and back
2019
This paper critically examines John Dewey’s and Axel Honneth’s critical social philosophies in order to highlight two different normative sources of social struggle: scientific understanding and social suffering. The paper discusses the relations of these sources with each other and aims to show to what extent the normative sources of Dewey’s and Honneth’s critical social theories are compatible. A further aim is to use the comparison between Dewey and Honneth in order to argue for a desiderata for critical social ontology. The argument is that we want to consistently include both elements – suffering and understanding – in critical social theory as only by having both will critical theory …
Identification of stress factors in intensive care units: Is a specific stress scale necessary?
2019
International audience; Background: Intensive care units (ICUs) are a health environment particularly affected by suffering at work. These units treat patients with serious medical conditions with an immediate life-threatening risk in an emergency situation. As a result, caregivers are confronted intensively and repeatedly with an extreme clinic. Currently, many tools used to assess caregiver stress are not as close as possible to the professional experience and do not take into account the subjective perception of stressors. The objective of this qualitative study is to rely directly on the way professionals perceive their work, and to identify the specificity of stress factors in ICU. Met…
2021
This article deals with the presence of unhappiness and painsharing in Seneca’s Troades and demonstrates the presence of a common thread that runs through the whole drama, which finds an exceptional relief in the fourth choral interlude. The lot of the prisoners allows for a painful meditation on the imminent exile and on the importance of sharing suffering.
Morality, Self-Knowledge and Human Suffering [introduction]
2012
This essay is in search of some light as to how one should respond to a certain kind of human suffering. The word 'should' undoubtedly raises a normative issue, and also the use of 'one' to refer to whoever may be subject to the corresponding normative demand. Choice of such words is hardly neutral and betrays a certain philosophical stance that, I hope, further considerations in this book will reasonably ground.

2020
One of the important problems raised in the works by Marguerite Duras is a specific opposition to rationalism, understood as the loss of meaning and absurdity of human existence in the face of the tragedy of World War Two. In this way, the author presents her attitude to Nazi barbarism, and in a broader context to the history of mankind. Her texts − exposing the writer’s doubts and obsessions − express the lack of logic of the world, the painful awareness of the inevitability of misfortune, existential emptiness, and the powerlessness of a man towards his own impotence. By rejecting “material life”, Duras’s work resounds with the contestation of rationalism illustrating the paradoxes of the…
