The Janus Face of Political Experience

Arendt’s concept of experience can contribute in important ways to the contemporary debates in political and feminist theory. However, while the notion is ubiquitous in Arendt’s thinking we lack an understanding of experience as a concept, as opposed to the impact of Arendt’s personal experiences on her thought. Drawing from her notes for “Political Experiences in the Twentieth Century,” the article seeks to enrich our understanding of the Janus-faced character of political experience.  The aim of this study was to investigate how at-home cancer patients perceived their life situations during the palliative care phase. The study employed a qualitative exploratory research design involving in-depth personal interviews with six women and two men between the ages of 35 and 63. Child's death is commonly viewed as the most difficult experience for its parents. This kind of loss and escalation of dismal emotions related to this event allows us to speak of suffering mental pain. Mourning for the loss of child differs significantly from o ther forms of bemoaning; time is rarely a great healer in this case and a sense of void often continues for the entire lifetime. W artykule podjęto próbę teologicznej oceny klasycznych modeli racjonalizacji cierpienia i zła. Należą do nich: harmonizacja i estetyzacja, ontologiczna depotencjacja, umoralizowanie oraz pedagogizacja zła. Autor dochodzi do wniosku, iż żaden z nich nie daje wystarczającej odpowiedzi na bolesne pytanie: Dlaczego Bóg dopuszcza zło? Niemniej jednak każdy z wymienionych modeli zawiera elementy, które z powodzeniem mogą być wykorzystane we współczesnym dyskursie teodycealnym.
