Risk Disclosure in the European Banking Industry: Qualitative and Quantitative Content Analysis Methodologies

2022

This book aims to shed light on the advantages and disadvantages of both qualitative and quantitative content analysis methodologies by examining risk disclosure practices in the European banking industry. Content analysis methodologies allow to assess the level of transparency of financial and non-financial reports by focusing on the information disclosed to the public with reference to their risk exposure and management. There is an ongoing debate in the literature to understand whether qualitative or quantitative content analysis methodologies are more effective and useful to analyse disclosure practices. Some authors contend that qualitative methodologies may be more appropriate because…

Risk Aversion in the Board Room. An Analytical Approach on Corporate Governance of German Stock–Listed Companies

2017

According to the agency theory, a positive relationship between company performance and good corporate governance should exist. A broader study of the author of this paper examines a sample of German stock–listed companies whereas Germany can be seen as one of the most highly regulated countries concerning corporate governance. The overall purpose of the author's study is to analyze the effect of supervisory board characteristics and procedures on firm performance. Several corporate governance variables such as number of committees, board independency, supervisory board compensation, personal risk liability, etc. are examined regarding their effects on firm performance in terms of firm grow…

Topics and techniques in clinical supervision in psychotherapy training

2017

AbstractClinical supervision is regarded as one of the most important components of psychotherapy training. In clinical practice, it has been found that the implementation of clinical supervision varies substantially and often differs from the recommendations made in the literature. The objective of the current study was to investigate the frequency of topics (e.g. ethical issues) and techniques (e.g. role play) in the clinical supervision of psychotherapy trainees in Germany. To this end, we considered supervisions in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy (PT). A total of 791 psychotherapy trainees (533 CBT and 242 PT) were asked via the internet to provide informat…

Organisation et conditions de la formation des doctorants dans le cadre de l'université française

2007

This research, refering to the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu, shows that higher education can be considered as a “champ scientifique”, defined as a microcosm, relatively autonomous from the economic and social macrocosm, nevertheless strongly affected by its values and its evolution toward liberalism. This evolution is clearly perceveid in the structural reforms (contractualization, decentralization, increased autonomy...) inferred notably by the construction of the European Higher Education and Research Area. Higher education is structured in a hierarchy with dominating disciplines (mathematics, physique, chemistry...) at the center and, dominated disciplines (Social sciences an…

Does job design make workers happy?

2019

Using linked employer‐employee data for Finland we examine associations between job design, employee well‐being and job‐related stress. Three key findings stand out. First, in accordance with the theory of Karasek and Karasek and Theorell, job control and supervisory support are positively correlated with employee well‐being and negatively correlated with job‐related stress. Second, as predicted by theory, job demands are positively correlated with job‐related stress. Third, there is no association between job demands and employee well‐being and, contrary to expectations, neither job control nor supervisory support alleviate the negative relationship between job demands and job‐related stre…

Prudential supervisors' independence and income smoothing in European banks

2019

[EN] We investigate the role of prudential supervisors' independence in affecting income smoothing behavior in European banks. Powerful national supervisors are predicted to influence the accounting practices of their supervised entities, shaping the properties of the accounting numbers they prepare. In particular, we study whether greater independence of powerful supervisors from the government and from the industry is associated with lower income smoothing. We use the mandatory adoption of a single set of accounting standards in Europe as a shock to the influence of prudential supervisors over national banks' accounting practice. Our results confirm that political and industry independenc…

Expert control of DO in the aerobic reactor of an activated sludge process

2001

Abstract An expert control structure is proposed for the control of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a Nitrification Denitrification Biological Excess Phosphorus Removal (NDBEPR) plant to account for the several processes that are influenced by the DO concentration in the aerator. In the scheme a supervisory fuzzy controller determines the set point of an inner DO control loop where an Adaptive Robust Generic Model Control (ARGMC) controller is used. The fuzzy supervisory control has a hierarchical structure. Off-line measurements of biological parameters of influent and effluent streams can be used to periodically update the set points of the fuzzy controllers. The complete control scheme has been…

Microgrid supervisory controllers and energy management systems:A literature review

2016

Abstract Microgrids (MGs), featured by distributed energy resources, consumption and storage, are designed to significantly enhance the self-sustainability of future electric distribution grids. In order to adapt to this new and revolutionary paradigm, it is necessary to control MGs in intelligent and coordinated fashion. To this aim, a new generation of advanced Microgrid Supervisory Controllers (MGSC) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) has emerged. The aim of this paper is to summarize the control objectives and development methodologies in the recently proposed MGSC/EMS. At first, a classification of control objectives is made according to the definition of hierarchical control layers i…

Consideration Regarding the Configuration of the Resources and Modeling the Manufacturing Work Cell

2015

This paper is presented the concept of developing a generic reference architecture model for the specification, development, control and reconfiguration of a manufacturing enterprise at a work cell level. It is described a generic system architecture for FMS; there is also briefly explained how to configure the different resource modules that actually control the tasks of the physical device and put together a work cell consisting of other FMS resources. Using the principles of distributed object technology there could be implemented each resource in the work cell as a distributed object. Finally, an example on building a FMS using a hierarchical approach is presented.

Task scheduling control of BGA solder joint process in flexible manufacturing system

2006

This paper describes an open loop control method of the solder joint process in a rework station for faulty printed circuit board (PCBs) containing electronic components in packages ball grid arrays (BGAs). In particular, a mathematical model describing the solder joint process is, first of all, obtained. Then, the desired thermal profile of the junctions BGA-PCB is determined according to the physical constraints of the rework station framework. The control parameters corresponding to the above desired thermal profile are identified using the above mathematical model. Finally, the open loop control algorithm is implemented on the supervisor interface of the rework station in order to carri…
