This study focused on the preparation and characterization of films based on biopolymers (hydroxypropylcellulose and low methoxyl pectin) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The morphology is strongly dependent on the polymer nature. In particular, we observed a sandwich-like structure composed of two hydroxypropylcellulose layers incorporating the HNTs and a homogeneous distribution of the nanotubes into the low methoxyl pectin matrix. The different mesoscopic properties were invoked to explain the dielectric, thermal, and wettability properties of the corresponding films. Biosilica-based immobilization strategy for label-free OWLS sensors

Abstract In the last years, a new group of enzymes, so-called silicateins, have been identified and characterized, which form the axial filaments of the spicules of the siliceous sponges, consisting of amorphous silica. Silicateins are able to catalyze the polycondensation and deposition of silica at mild conditions (low temperature and physiological pH). By means of these enzymes it is possible for the first time to produce silica nanostructures biocatalytically, which opens new ways for construction of biosensors. Deposition of very thin uniform indium sulfide layers over metallic nano-rods by the Spray-Ion Layer Gas Reaction method

Abstract Very thin and uniform layers of indium sulfide were deposited on nickel nano-rods using the sequential and cyclical Spray-ILGAR® (Ion Layer Gas Reaction) technique. Substrates were fabricated by electrodeposition of Ni within the pores of polycarbonate membranes and subsequent chemical dissolution of the template. With respect to the depositions on flat substrates, experimental conditions were modified and optimized for the present geometry. Vibronic structure in triatomic molecules : The hydrocarbon flame bands of the formyl radical (HCO). A theoretical study

A theoretical study of the vibrational structure of the math 2A′ ground and math 2A′ excited states of the formyl radical, HCO, and its deuterated form, DCO, has been performed. The potential energy surfaces have been computed by means of a multiconfigurational perturbative method, CASPT2. The computed geometries and the harmonic and anharmonic frequencies are successfully compared to the available experimental information. The vibrational intensities of the transition math 2A′↔math 2A′ have been computed both for absorption and emission. Structure of bottle brush polymers on surfaces: weak versus strong adsorption.

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are presented for a coarse-grained model of cylindrical molecular brushes adsorbed on a flat structureless substrate, varying both the chain length N of the side chains and the backbone chain length N(b). For the case of good solvent conditions, both the cases of weak adsorption (only 10 to 15% of the monomers being bound to the surface) and strong adsorption (~40% of the monomers being bound to the surface, forcing the bottle brush into an almost 2D conformation) are studied. Detection of phase transitions in thin films with a quartz crystal microbalance

Abstract The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is used to determine the phase transition point of thin films by measuring the change in frequency as a function of temperature. To elucidate this relationship, two types of polymers were studied where the bulk phase transitions were known. We investigated a casted thin film of an amphiphilic polyoxazoline and a Langmuir-Blodgett film comprised of fifteen double layers of an amphotropic polyacrylate. The phase transition points of the thin films could be detected by the QCM which were in the same range as for the bulk materials.

Two-Dimensional Assembly Formation of Hydrophobic Helical Peptides at the Air/Water Interface: Fluorescence Microscopic Study

Monolayer formation of hydrophobic α-helical peptides, X-(Ala-Aib) 8 -Y (X=Boc-, HOOCCH 2 CH 2 CO-, biotinyl, biotinyl-(Sar) 3 -; Y=OMe, OBzl, OH), at the air/water interface was studied by the fluorescence microscopic method. Some peptides showed a mound in the π-A isotherm. When the monolayer containing a small amount of FITC-labeled peptide was held at the surface pressure corresponding to the top of the mound, bright and dark domains were observed by fluorescence microscopy. Domain formation was also observed by the addition of a cationic dye (DiIC 1 ) into the subphase underneath the peptide monolayer. We report a Fe(II) complex based on 4′,4′′ carboxylic acid disubstituted dipyrazolylpyridine that shows a spin-crossover close to room temperature associated to a crystallographic phase transition and the LIESST effect with a high T(LIESST) of 120 K.

Surface plasmon near-field imaging of very thin microstructured polymer layers.

We report on the near-field imaging of microstructured polymer layers deposited on an homogeneous metal thin film on which a surface plasmon mode is excited. The microstructures in the polymer layers are designed by electron beam lithography, and the near-field imaging is performed with a photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). We show that, despite their very small height, the microstructures can be conveniently imaged with a PSTM thanks to the field enhancement at the surface of the metal thin film supporting the surface plasmon.
