The gut microbiota - a modulator of endothelial cell function and a contributing environmental factor to arterial thrombosis.
2019
Introduction: There is emerging evidence linking the commensal gut microbiota with the development of cardiovascular disease and arterial thrombosis. In immunothrombosis, the host clotting system protects against the dissemination of invading microbes, not considering the huge number of microbes that interact with host physiology in a mutualistic fashion. Areas covered: Interestingly, recent research revealed that colonizing gut microbes profoundly influence host innate immune pathways that support arterial thrombus growth. The gut microbiota promotes arterial thrombus formation by enhancing the pro-adhesive capacity of the vascular endothelium, triggering hepatic von Willebrand factor synt…
2011
Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are one of the most widely used groups of drugs and their potential toxicity is periodically reviewed, emphasizing aspects originally considered secondary. The present review analyzes the physiological and pharmacological bases and the scarce clinical evidence for a potential association between the continued administration of PPI and the development of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Both disorders are clearly related to calcium homeostasis and are highly important in elderly patients due to their poor general prognosis and disabling consequences.
Structure and physical properties of [mu-tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4 ')iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), a new Fe(II) spin-crossover co…
2004
[mu-Tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4')iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), [Fe(btzb)(3)](PF6)(2), crystallizes in a three-dimensional 3-fold interlocked structure featuring a sharp two-step spin-crossover behavior. The spin conversion takes place between 164 and 182 K showing a discontinuity at about T-1/2 = 174 K and a hysteresis of about 4 K between T-1/2 and the low-spin state. The spin transition has been independently followed by magnetic susceptibility measurements, Fe-57-Mossbauer spectroscopy, and variable temperature far and midrange FIR spectroscopy. The title compound crystallizes in the trigonal space group P (3) over bar (No. 147) with a unit cell content of one formula u…
Electronic characterisation of the oxidized state of the blue copper protein Rusticyanin by 1 H NMR: Is the axial methionine the dominant influence f…
2001
The oxidized state of rusticyanin, the blue copper protein with the highest redox potential in its class, has been investigated through (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance applied to its cobalt(II) derivative. The assignment of the protons belonging to the coordinated residues has been performed. Many other amino acids situated in the vicinity of the metal ion, including six hydrophobic residues (isoleucine140 and five phenylalanines) have also been identified. The orientation of the main axes of the magnetic susceptibility tensor for the cobalt(II)-rusticyanin as well as its axial, Deltachi(ax), and rhombic, Deltachi(rh), magnetic susceptibility anisotropy components have been determined. A co…

Intergrain Effects in the AC Susceptibility of Polycrystalline LaFeAsO_{0.94}F_{0.06}
2010
The AC susceptibility, chi, at zero DC magnetic field of a polycrystalline sample of LaFeAsO_{0.94}F_{0.06} (Tc ≈ 24 K) has been investigated as a function of the temperature, the amplitude of the AC magnetic field (in the range Hac = 0.003 Oe - 4 Oe) and the frequency (in the range f = 10 kHz - 100 kHz). The chi(T) curve exhibits the typical two-step transition arising from the combined response of superconducting grains and intergranular weak-coupled medium. The intergranular part of chi strongly depends on both the amplitude and the frequency of the AC driving field, from few Kelvin below Tc down to T = 4.2 K. Our results show that, in the investigated sample, the intergrain critical cur…
The behavior of correlation functions in trans-polyacetylene: quantum Monte Carlo study
2002
We present results of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model to study different correlation functions in the trans-polyacetylene (t-PA) polymer. Magnetic structure of the model in t-PA is studied for a different range values of the Hubbard repulsion interactions, U and V ,w here U 4t , with V ∈[ U/2 ,U ] (t is the hopping matrix elements). In this work, we investigate the behavior of the magnetic correlation functions for different phases transitions between different ordering (antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) by varying the nearest-neighbor interactions U and V between different atomic sites. Our results indicate that there is a presence of a …
Exchange interactions through hydrogen-bond bridges. Crystal structure, spectroscopic characterisation and magnetic properties of the complex [{Cu(en…
1998
Abstract The structure and spectroscopic and magnetic properties of [{Cu(en)}2(μ-egta)]·4H2O (H4egta = 3,12-bis(carboxymethyl)-6–9-dio 3,12-diazatetradecanedioic acid) are described. The compound is built of centrosymmetric neutral dimeric {[Cu(en)}2(μ-egta)] entities linked through hydrogen bonds involving water molecules. -NH2 groups and -CO2 groups, affording a three-dimensional framework. The egta anion displays an opened-up structure acting as a bridging ligand between two copper atoms. The coordination geometry about the metal atoms can be viewed as 4 + 1 + 1 (CuN3OO′O″ chromophores). The EPR spectra are indicative of an essentially dv−v ground state for the copper(II) ions. Magnetic …
Synthesis and characterization of four novel manganese(II) chains formed by 4,4′-azobis(pyridine) and benzoate or nitrobenzoates: Stabilization of un…
2013
Abstract Four new manganese(II) coordination polymers: [Mn(4,4′-azpy)(C6H5COO)2](4,4′-azpy)0.5 (1), [Mn(4,4′-azpy)(p-(NO2)C6H4COO)2] (2), [Mn(4,4′-azpy)(m-(NO2)C6H4COO)2] (3) and [Mn(4,4′-azpy)(o-(NO2)C6H4COO)2(H2O)2] (4), where 4,4′-azpy = 4,4′-azobis(pyridine), have been synthesized by self-assembly of MnX2 (X = benzoate, p-, m-, or o-nitrobenzoates) together with 4,4′-azpy. All four complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. The structural analyses reveal that complexes 1, 2 and 3 feature a 1D molecular ladder formed by syn–syn (complex 1) or syn–anti (com…
