Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological impact of an antibacterial suture (Monocryl® Plus) in the surgical removal of I3M. Material and Methods A “split-mouth”, prospective pilot clinical study was designed involving 20 patients programmed for the surgical removal of I3M. Each side was randomly sutured with Monocryl® Plus or silk suture and removed for microbiological study 72 hours and 7 days after surgery. Nanostructured medical sutures with antibacterial properties

Bacterial repellence in suture materials is a desirable property that can potentially improve the healing process by preventing infection. We describe a method for generating nanostructures at the surface of commercial sutures of different composition, and their potential for preventing biofilm formation. We show how bacteria attachment is altered in the presence of nanosized topographies and identify optimum designs for preventing it without compromising biocompatibility and applicability in terms of nanostructure robustness or tissue friction. We present an alternative idea for valve-sparing technique combining the advantages of the reimplantation and the benefits of the remodeling techniques. We replace the sinuses of Valsalva using three Dacron skirts from inside of the aorta. The physiological anatomy of the Valsalva sinuses and their dynamic properties are preserved and the aortic commissures displacement avoided. The distal rim of each Dacron skirt was anchored to the aorto-ventricular junction using Ticron (2-0) U stitches placed from the ventricular side to the aortic side. We stabilize the base of the aortic annulus to prevent future dilation.

A technique is described that allows a simple and safe temporary occlusion of the coronary artery in beating heart procedures using monofilament stay sutures underlaid with small pericardial pads. Postoperative serial levels of Troponin I remained low (<4 ng/L) and control angiography revealed no stenosis in the distal coronary artery.

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Although reconstructive surgery is the most accepted treatment for ureteral injury, there are reports of cases where endourologic treatment led to correct resolution of the problem. We present the case of a female patient aged 72-year-old who was previously underwent sacralcolpopexy because of anterior vaginal compartment prolapse. The patient underwent surgery to remove the mesh, due to the pain she had had since it was placed. A mid-line laparotomy was performed removing completely the mesh. [EN] Cryopreserved human tendons were sutured with different variations of a modified Kessler-type grasping suture in a series of different designs in order to assess the influence of the distance between the cross-stitch on the core suture (5 and 10 mm from the cut tendon edge) on the peripheral suture. An original mathematical model was employed to explain the mechanical behavior (strength, deformation, and distribution of load) of the different suture designs. The device was developed for a study designed to evaluate catheters for infection prophylaxis, and this required the implantation of silicone catheters along a reproducible trajectory through the lateral ventricle.
