Multisensory integration of drumming actions: musical expertise affects perceived audiovisual asynchrony

2009

We investigated the effect of musical expertise on sensitivity to asynchrony for drumming point-light displays, which varied in their physical characteristics (Experiment 1) or in their degree of audiovisual congruency (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, 21 repetitions of three tempos x three accents x nine audiovisual delays were presented to four jazz drummers and four novices. In Experiment 2, ten repetitions of two audiovisual incongruency conditions x nine audiovisual delays were presented to 13 drummers and 13 novices. Participants gave forced-choice judgments of audiovisual synchrony. The results of Experiment 1 show an enhancement in experts' ability to detect asynchrony, especially fo…

CASE tool support for co-operative work in information systems design

1998

The need for asynchronous co-operative work in design is shown by many surveys of CASE tool use and research on design. MetaEdit+ is a metaCASE environment that allows multiple simultaneous modellers to work together on designing information systems and also information systems design methods. We describe the automatic locking strategies that enable MetaEdit+ to offer a high level of concurrency whilst guaranteeing consistency, enabling effective co-operative work. In particular we describe a new collection data structure that allows high concurrency of updates even at small sizes, fulfilling the need in CASE for largest growth of design information at the start of a project. Finally, we ev…

Event-Triggered Sleeping for Synchronous DC MAC IN WSNs: Mechanism and DTMC Modeling

2016

Overhearing and idle listening are two primary sources for unnecessary energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. Although introducing duty cycling in medium access control (MAC) reduces idle listening, it cannot avoid overhearing in a network with multiple contending nodes. In this paper, we propose an event-triggered sleeping (ETS) mechanism for synchronous duty-cycled (DC) MAC protocols in order to avoid overhearing when a node is not active. This ETS mechanism applies to any synchronous DC MAC protocols and makes them more energy efficient. Furthermore, we develop a two dimensional discrete time Markov chain model to evaluate the performance of the proposed ETS mechanism by integra…

Self and N-2 collisional broadening of far-infrared methane lines measured at the SOLEIL synchrotron

2012

International audience; Following our recent study devoted to measurements of intensities of pure rotation lines of methane, room temperature far infrared spectra of methane diluted in nitrogen at five total pressures between 100 and 800 hPa have been recorded at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron. One hundred and five N-2 broadening coefficients of methane pure rotation lines have been measured in the 83-261 cm(-1) spectral range using multi-spectrum non-linear least squares fitting of Voigt profiles. Pressure-induced line shifts were not needed to fit the spectra to the noise level and line mixing effects were neglected. One hundred and seventy-six self broadening coefficients h…

Resonance scattering in macromolecular structure research

2005

Resonance (or anomalous) X-ray scattering of partially ordered macromolecular structures, amorphous materials and solutions is encountered in the near edge region of X-ray absorption edges where the resonant real part f' of atomic form factors shows the strongest dispersion. The requirements of spectral brilliance in the near absorption edges can only be met by synchrotron radiation emitted from high energy electron (positron) storage rings. Resonance scattering yields three basic scattering functions. This compares to contrast variation in neutron scattering. The relations to isomorphous replacement methods of crystallography are discussed. The analysis of the basic scattering functions in…

Photoemission study of the reactivity of barium towards SiOx thermal films

2011

Abstract Barium was deposited at room temperature on a thermal silicon oxide layer and the interfacial reaction was monitored by synchrotron induced photoemission (both core level and valence band). The first step of the growth consists of an interfacial reaction which leads to the formation of an interfacial silicate layer. The next step consists in formation of barium oxide while metallic barium occurs subsequently. The deposit can be also homogenized by annealing above 575 K. This results in the formation of several layers of silicate by consumption of silicon oxide. In the case of fractional coverage, subsequent annealing at 975 K induces the decomposition of barium silicate. However, s…

Extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and first-principles study of SnWO4

2014

The local atomic structure in α- and β-SnWO 4 was studied bysynchrotron radiation W L 3 -edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 10 and 300 K.Strongly distorted WO 6 octahedra were found in α-SnWO 4 , whereas nearly regularWO 4 tetrahedra were observed in β-SnWO 4 , confirming previous results. Thestructural results obtained were supported by the first-principles calculations, suggesting that the second-order Jahn-Teller effect is responsible for octahedraldistortion.

Local structure in Ga1−xInxSe alloys

2021

Abstract In this work we study the local structure of layered G a 1 − x I n x S e alloys by means of X-ray Absorption. We complement our research with a Raman study. The available alloys have compositions close to the host binaries. The dependence of XANES (X-ray Near Edge Structure) features with synchrotron polarization clearly establishes the substitutional character of the alloying cations. Interstitial atoms, if present, remain under the detection limit of the technique. EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) demonstrates the existence of G a − I n bonds in the alloys. The cation-anion bond-lengths in the alloys remain similar to that of the pure compounds. There is no signif…

Double implantation in silica glass for metal cluster composite formation: a study by synchrotron radiation techniques

2001

Silica glass containing metal clusters is studied for both basic and applied aspects, related to the physics of cluster formation and to the optical properties of these materials. To obtain such composite structure, Cu+ Ni, Au+ Cu, Au+ Ag, Cu+ Co, and Cu+ Ag sequential implantations in fused silica were realized. The resulting systems, after possible annealing in various atmospheres, were studied by synchrotron radiation-based techniques, namely, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The unique potential of these techniques is the capability to investigate dilut…
