Second order optimality conditions in the smooth case and applications in optimal control

2007

International audience; The aim of this article is to present algorithms to compute the first conjugate time along a smooth extremal curve, where the trajectory ceases to be optimal. It is based on recent theoretical developments of geometric optimal control, and the article contains a review of second order optimality conditions. The computations are related to a test of positivity of the intrinsic second order derivative or a test of singularity of the extremal flow. We derive an algorithm called COTCOT (Conditions of Order Two and COnjugate times), available on the web, and apply it to the minimal time problem of orbit transfer, and to the attitude control problem of a rigid spacecraft. …

Regularization of chattering phenomena via bounded variation controls

2018

In control theory, the term chattering is used to refer to strong oscillations of controls, such as an infinite number of switchings over a compact interval of times. In this paper we focus on three typical occurences of chattering: the Fuller phenomenon, referring to situations where an optimal control switches an infinite number of times over a compact set; the Robbins phenomenon, concerning optimal control problems with state constraints, meaning that the optimal trajectory touches the boundary of the constraint set an infinite number of times over a compact time interval; the Zeno phenomenon, referring as well to an infinite number of switchings over a compact set, for hybrid optimal co…

Solving chance constrained optimal control problems in aerospace via Kernel Density Estimation

2017

International audience; The goal of this paper is to show how non-parametric statistics can be used to solve some chance constrained optimization and optimal control problems. We use the Kernel Density Estimation method to approximate the probability density function of a random variable with unknown distribution , from a relatively small sample. We then show how this technique can be applied and implemented for a class of problems including the God-dard problem and the trajectory optimization of an Ariane 5-like launcher.

Design of a Real-time face detection parallel architecture using High-Level Synthesis

2008

Abstract We describe a High-Level Synthesis implementation of a parallel architecture for face detection. The chosen face detection method is the well-known Convolutional Face Finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists of a pipeline of convolution operations. We rely on dataflow modelling of the algorithm and we use a high-level synthesis tool in order to specify the local dataflows of our Processing Element (PE), by describing in C language inter-PE communication, fine scheduling of the successive convolutions, and memory distribution and bandwidth. Using this approach, we explore several implementation alternatives in order to find a compromise between processing speed and area of the PE. We …

Localization from inertial data and sporadic position measurements

2020

International audience; A novel estimation strategy for inertial navigation in indoor/outdoor environments is proposed with a specific attention to the sporadic nature of the non-periodic measurements. After introducing the inertial navigation model, we introduce an observer providing an asymptotic estimate of the plant state. We use a hybrid dynamical systems representation for our results, in order to provide an effective, and elegant theoretical framework. The estimation error dynamics with the proposed observer shows a peculiar cascaded interconnection of three subsystems (allowing for intuitive gain tuning), with perturbations occurring either on the jump or on the flow dynamics (depen…

Nonlinear sculpturing of optical pulses with normally dispersive fiber-based devices

2018

International audience; We present a general method to determine the parameters of nonlinear pulse shaping systems based on pulse propagation in a normally dispersive fiber that are required to achieve the generation of pulses with various specified temporal properties. The nonlinear shaping process is reduced to a numerical optimization problem over a three-dimensional space, where the intersections of different surfaces provide the means to quickly identify the sets of parameters of interest. We also show that the implementation of a machine-learning strategy can efficiently address the multi-parameter optimization problem being studied.

The 2014 Magnetism Roadmap

2014

Magnetism is a very fascinating and dynamic field. Especially in the last 30 years it has experienced many major advances in the full range from novel fundamental phenomena to new products. Applications such as hard disk drives and magnetic sensors are part of our daily life, and new applications, such as in non-volatile computer random access memory, are expected to surface shortly. Thus it is timely for describing the current status, and current and future challenges in the form of a Roadmap article. This 2014 Magnetism Roadmap provides a view on several selected, currently very active innovative developments. It consists of 12 sections, each written by an expert in the field and addressi…

In Situ, Airborne Instrumentation: Addressing and Solving Measurement Problems in Ice Clouds

2012

The workshop on in situ airborne instrumentation: addressing and solving measurement problems in ice clouds, June 25-27, 2010, Oregon, aimed to identify unresolved questions concerning ice formation and evolution in ice clouds, assess the current state of instrumentation that can address these problems, introduce emerging technology that may overcome current measurement issues, and recommend future courses of action to improve our understanding of ice cloud microphysical. Eleven presentations were made covering measurement challenges associated measuring the composition and concentration of all the modes of ice nuclei (IN), measuring the morphology, mass, surface, and optical properties of …

Average Age of Information in Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing System

2022

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been recognized as a promising technique to provide enhanced computation services for low-power wireless devices at the network edge. How to evaluate the timeliness of the task and data delivery is critical for the development of MEC applications. Considering a wireless powered MEC system, in this letter we study the average age of information (AoI), which is a crucial performance metric to measure the freshness of information. Specifically, in the considered system, a sensor node harvests energy from an energy transmitter and transmits computation tasks to the MEC server. The charging time of the sensor node’s capacitor, the waiting time and service time at …
