‘Experimental Union’ and Baltic Sea cooperation: the case of the European Union’s Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR)

2018

In the past, Baltic Sea cooperation has been characterized by a plethora of actors, embracing a wide range of policy objectives, such as the establishment of a good environmental status for the regional sea. In 2009, the European Council endorsed the European Union’s (EU) Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) as a new tool in the repertoire of Cohesion Policy and European Territorial Cooperation (ETC). The EUSBSR seeks to foster cross-sectoral coordination and functional cooperation in policy areas of ‘macro-region-level’ relevance, such as transport infrastructure, economic development and environmental protection – thus projecting a ‘soft space’ of transnational Baltic Sea cooperati…

Climate change, ethics and sustainability: An innovative approach

2018

Our goal in this article is the analysis of the state of affairs, regarding the phenomenon of climate change and its impact in different areas. We synthesize the various approaches available in the scientific debate on this subject, mainly the one that affirms the existence of global warming and the current approach, which denies it. Beyond the controversy, what seems to be evident is that there is a multifactorial causality in a phenomenon that affects anthropogenic factors a well. Since some environmentalisms exclude the human being in their consideration of the ecosystem, and if they do, they accommodate man in their approaches always as a variable that distorts and deteriorates the envi…

Economics, Science and Capitalism

2021

Various strains of heterodox economics have sought, and largely failed, to dismount orthodoxy from its dominant position. This book critiques the criticizers, explaining why heterodox economics challenges have faltered, and then presents a coherent alternative paradigm of its own. This simultaneously exposes the vacuousness of neoclassical economics, the limitations of heterodox critique and the subverting of Karl Marx’s revolutionary economic thought by his own disciples. The book draws in particular on two key intellectual traditions in making its arguments: critical realism and Marxism. From the refounding of critical realist philosophy of science in the hands of Roy Bhaskar, emphasis is…

Death and Culture

2018

Taking cues from the surging popularity of thana-tourism, this paper argues that its prevalence echoes the end days of capitalism. The predominant forms of tourism in a society reflect the ethos of that society. What we once called ‘mass tourism' reflected the spirit of classical capitalism; later, ecotourism and various other alternative forms of tourism reflected a critical turn in capitalism, often called the ‘sympathetic capitalism'. These were incremental alternations, however. Thana-tourism is a qualitatively discontinuous form of tourism and its surge should thus correspond with a similarly discontinuous, radical, shift in capitalism. The authors present scholarly perspectives to bri…

THE IMPACT OF HEADMASTER’S LEADERSHIP PRACTICE ON THE FORMATION OF A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY AT SCHOOL

2019

In the context of general education content reform initiated in Latvia, which also provides change of teaching approach, the issue of the role of headmaster has raised. The introduction and implementation of competence approach requires strengthening and development of cooperation between teachers in professional learning communities (PLCs) at school, in order to address didactic issues, regularly analyze pupils` learning outcomes and find best ways to increase the learning outcomes of each pupil, and give an opportunity for teachers to improve their teaching by sharing good pedagogical practice. The change of teaching approach prompts a revision of school management practices as well. In o…

Borgese, Jovine e Silone prefatori per il Touring Club Italiano

2014

Fetal presentation of Morquio disease type A.

1992

A fetus with mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A (Morquio type A) is described. The family had one affected child exhibiting symptoms of classical Morquio A disease, and late in the subsequent pregnancy prenatal diagnosis was requested. At 23 weeks' gestation, moderate ascites was detected by detailed ultrasound scan and keratan sulphate was found in the amniotic fluid. The pregnancy was terminated by prostaglandin induction and the diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A was confirmed by demonstration of a deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulphate (GalNac-6-S) sulphatase in cultured amniotic cells and in post-mortem fibroblast cultures. The activities of beta-galactosidase and arylsu…

Monete false.

The essay analyzes how the Wes…

Sonographic Prognostic Factors in Prenatal Diagnosis of SCT

2003

Objective: A subset of fetuses with sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCT) develops hydrops caused by high-output heart failure. Identification of fetuses at risk for hydrops is important because surgical intervention may reverse the pathophysiology of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate sonographic prognostic factors regarding tumor morphology and vascularity associated with the development of hydrops in utero. Methods: Over a 10-year period, we identified 7 fetuses with SCT diagnosed antenatally and managed at the University of Mainz. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of mothers and infants and recorded data on prenatal diagnosis, tumor si…

Marchés du travail et disparités régionales en Pologne

2001

This article evaluates empirically the effect o f market introduction on the level o f regional inequalities and on the polarisation o f economic activities in Poland. We note an increase o f the disparities between regions over the relevant period. The re-polarisation process cannot been explained by a spatial re-allocation of labour force but rather results o f the differentiation of sectoral restructuring between regions the regional diversity o f sectoral adaptation. The search for agglomeration economies explains the spatial concentration o f services and o f added value in the regions where the biggest cities are located. A cumulative process o f agglomeration is observed. Therefore, …
