Microfinance and poverty reduction in Tanzania : experiences from Dar es Salaam

2011

The emergence of micro credit as an effective tool for poverty reduction is widely recognized in the world since the 1990s. The World Bank also values categorically micro credit for poverty alleviation. The financial sector reform in Tanzania in 1991 emphasized the need for micro credit to the poor, in order to enable them to become entrepreneurs. It also aimed at providing household support as a mean of poverty reduction and economic growth. However, a number of constraints exist within this reform, for instance, establishing a new micro finance organization and providing credit access to poor. Therefore entrepreneurship and household income situation is not improving as it is expected by …

Ego sum, ego existo. Per una rilettura della res cogitans

2016

The notion of res cogitans has constituted a privileged critical objective of readings of modern subjectivity in a deconstructionist key, coming to act as a term in which there seem to merge, in a sort of fatal alliance, hyperconscientialism, reification, solipsism and everything the contemporary culture attributes to bad metaphysics, or even to metaphysics tout court. However, also and above all when it is understood within the ontologically strong meaning of substantia, the Cartesian reference to res cogitans does not necessarily denote the simple outcome of the I folding back into alleged and undisturbed autonomy. It also proves to be the locus in which what is challenged is precisely th…

Levansucrases from Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and P. chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca: Substrate specificity, polymerizing properties and usage of…

2011

Levansucrases of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Lsc3) and Pseudomonas chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca (also Pseudomonas aurantiaca) (LscA) have 73% identity of protein sequences, similar substrate specificity and kinetic properties. Both enzymes produce levan and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) of varied length from sucrose, raffinose and sugar beet molasses. A novel high-throughput chip-based nanoelectrospray mass spectrometric method was applied to screen alternative fructosyl acceptors for levansucrases. Lsc3 and LscA could both transfructosylate D-xylose, D-fucose, L- and D-arabinose, D-ribose, D-sorbitol, xylitol, xylobiose, D-mannitol, D-galacturonic acid and methyl-α-D-glucopyra…

Synthesis, radiofluorination and first evaluation of (±)-[18F]MDL 100907 as serotonin 5-HT2Areceptor antagonist for PET

2009

In some psychiatric disorders 5-HT2A receptors play an important role. In order to investigate those in vivo there is an increasing interest in obtaining a metabolically stable, subtype selective and high affinity radioligand for receptor binding studies using positron emission tomography (PET). Combining the excellent in vivo properties of [11C]MDL 100907 for PET imaging of 5-HT2A receptors and the more suitable half-life of fluorine-18, MDL 100907 was radiofluorinated in four steps using 1-(2-bromoethyl)-4-[18F]fluorobenzene as a secondary labelling precursor. The complex reaction required an overall reaction time of 140 min and (±)-[18F]MDL 100907 was obtained with a specific activity of…

Steroidal saponins from Chlorophytum deistelianum.

2016

Abstract Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of Chlorophytum deistelianum led to the isolation of four previously undescribed steroidal saponins called chlorodeistelianosides A–D with five known ones. Their structures were established mainly by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry as (25R)-3β-[(β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)]-β- d -xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β- d -galactopyranosyl)oxy]-5α-spirostan-12-one, (24S,25S)-24-[(β- d -glucopyranosyl)oxy]-3β-[(β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β- d -xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β- d -galactopyranosyl)ox…

Solanum incanum and S. heteracanthum as sources of biologically active steroid glycosides: Confirmation of their synonymy

2012

A new spirostanol saponin (1), along with four known saponins, dioscin (2), protodioscin (3), methyl-protodioscin (4), and indioside D (5), and one known steroid glycoalkaloid solamargine (6) were isolated from the two synonymous species, Solanum incanum and S. heteracanthum. The structure of the new saponin was established as (23S,25R)-spirost-5-en-3β,23-diol 3-O-{β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-[O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside}, by using a combination of 1D and 2D NMR techniques including (1)H, (13)C, COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC and HMBC experiments and by mass spectrometry. The compounds 1, 3, 4 and 5 were evaluated for cytotoxicity against five cancer c…

Steroidal saponins from Chlorophytum orchidastrum.

2009

Six new spirostane-type saponins (1−6), named orchidastrosides A−F, and chloromaloside D were isolated from an ethanol extract of the roots of Chlorophytum orchidastrum. The saponins have neotigogenin or neogitogenin as the aglycon and oligosaccharidic chains possessing seven to nine sugar units. Their structures were elucidated mainly by 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC) and FABMS and HRESIMS. Compounds 1−6 were tested for cytotoxicity against two human colon cancer cell lines, HCT 116 and HT-29.

Streptococcus Mutans sortāzes A ekspresija, attīrīšana un raksturošana zāļu vielu skrīningam

2019

Slimības, ko izraisa patogēni, īpaši multirezistenti, piemēram, Streptococcus mutans, ir nepieciešams apkarot. Multirezistentu grampozitīvu patogēnu baktēriju transpeptidāzes - sortāzes A - mērķproteīna inhibēšana mazina patogēnu saistīšanās spēju - virulenci - un līdz ar to arī rezistenci. Bakalaura darbā Streptococcus mutans sortāze A tiek izmantota kā instruments, lai pārbaudītu novatoriskus ķīmiskus savienojumus, kam piemīt spēja inhibēt sortāzi A. Mērķis bija, izmantojot zāļu vielu skrīninga metodi, atlasīt ķīmiskas vielas, kam piemīt sortāzes A inhibēšana un kuras varētu izmantot, lai apkarotu multirezistentu grampozitīvu patogēnu izraistītas slimības. Streptococcus mutans sortāzes A …

A novel and simple method for the purification of extracellular levansucrase from Zymomonas mobilis.

2003

A new and simple method for the purification of extracellular levansucrase from Zymomonas mobilis from highly viscous fermentation broth was developed. After incubation of the fermentation broth with a fructose-polymer cleaving enzyme preparation (Fructozyme, Novozymes, DK) for 48 h, levansucrase precipitated as aggregates and was redissolved in a 3 M urea solution. By ongoing size-exclusion chromatography on Sephacryl S-300 the final levansucrase preparation was purified 100-fold and exhibited a specific activity of 25-35 U/mg(protein). The levansucrase was stable in 3 M urea solution for at least four months without inactivation. To maximize the enzyme yield the dynamic changes of extrace…

Introduction : spaces of upset in the Nordic region

2022

Abstract This introductory article opens the thematic issue Spaces of Upset in the Nordic Region. It introduces the contributions of the issue, outlines the concepts that unite them, and discusses the sociolinguistic area in which they are set: the Nordic region. Centering on Denmark, Finland and Sweden, the article offers an overview of some of the sociolinguistic, ideological and political characteristics of the region and the countries it comprises. The Nordic region is widely seen as a paradigm case of social stability, consensus and cohesion. This vision is, however, a mirage. To be sure, upset often lingers below the discursive veneer of Nordic harmony, concord and agreement. Breaking…
