A Repository for Multirelational Dynamic Networks

2012

Nowadays, WWW contains a number of social media sites, which are growing rapidly. One of the main features of social media sites is to allow to its users creation and modification of contents of the site utilizing the offered WWW interfaces. Such contents are referred to as user generated contents and their type varies from site to site. Social media sites can be modeled as constantly evolving multirelational directed graphs. In this paper we discuss persistent data structures for such graphs, and present and analyze queries performed against the structures. We also estimate the space requirements of the proposed data structures, and compare them with the naive "store each complete snapshot…

A modelling framework for social media monitoring

2013

This paper describes a hierarchical, three-level modelling framework for monitoring social media. Immediate social reality is modelled through the first level of the models. They represent various virtual communities at social media sites and adhere to the social world models of the sites, i.e., the "site ontologies". The second-level model is a temporal multirelational graph that captures the static and dynamic properties of the first-level models from the perspective of the monitoring site. The third-level model consists of a temporal relational database scheme that models the temporal multirelational graph within the database. The models are specified and instantiated at the monitoring s…

Formal specification of open standards and the case of RSS v2.0

2014

Open standardization seems to be very popular among software developers as it makes the standard's adoption by the software engineering community easier and smoother. Formal specification methods, on the other hand, while very promising, are being adopted by protocol engineers very slowly; the industry seems to have little motivation to move into this, almost unknown, territory. In this paper the authors present the i) idea of applying formal methods (formal specification techniques) to open standards' specifications, and ii) an example of a formal specification of open standards, RSS v2.0 in particular. The authors support and provide evidence for the advantages of the open standards formal…

Combining PCA and multiset CCA for dimension reduction when group ICA is applied to decompose naturalistic fMRI data

2015

An extension of group independent component analysis (GICA) is introduced, where multi-set canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) is combined with principal component analysis (PCA) for three-stage dimension reduction. The method is applied on naturalistic functional MRI (fMRI) images acquired during task-free continuous music listening experiment, and the results are compared with the outcome of the conventional GICA. The extended GICA resulted slightly faster ICA convergence and, more interestingly, extracted more stimulus-related components than its conventional counterpart. Therefore, we think the extension is beneficial enhancement for GICA, especially when applied to challenging fMRI d…

Phantom/liminal fat and feminist theories of the body

2017

This article brings together two concepts, ‘phantom fat’ and ‘liminal fat’, which both aim to grasp how fat in contemporary culture becomes a kind of material immateriality, corporeality in suspension. Comparing the spheres of representation and experience, we examine the challenges and usefulness of these concepts, and feminist fat studies perspectives more broadly, to feminist scholarship on the body. We ask what connects and disconnects fat corporeality and fat studies from ways of theorising other embodied differences, like gender, ‘race’, disability, class and sexuality, especially when thinking through their perceived mutability or removability, and assumptions about their relevance …

Dialogeja, paikkoja, tiloja ja tilanteita : ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival kohtaamisten mahdollistajana

2019

ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival on kansainvälinen aika- ja paikkasidonnaisen nykytaiteen festivaali Kuopiossa. Festivaali syntyi vuonna 2002 aktivoimaan kaupunkitiloja taideteosten avulla.

Subjectivity of a teacher and his/her competence in the context of contemporary cyvilizing changes

2014

The subject of the reflections set out in this article are the issues relating to the subjectivity of a teacher and his competence in the face of civilizing changes. As the title suggests, the study deals with the diversified division of competences both of contemporary man and the teacher. Professional training of educators should include both a grounding in theory and assertions on the subject of man’s development, processes of “finding one’s place” naturally in the world, process educating man with a defined goal (education and upbringing) and processes of his socialization (collectivisation - full time employment - nationalization - politicization - globalization).
