Optimization of two-step batch processes and the method of compensation for random error

2012

This paper considers the problem of the optimal setting of controllable variables in two-step processes with quality constraints. The optimal setting minimizes the cost and satisfies quality constraints defined for the final output. The main emphasis is given to processes where it is possible to make intermediate measurements after the first processing step and to utilize these measurements before the control variables in the second step are set. Optimization based on this method of compensation for random error can yield substantially lower cost than does optimization based on a strategy where all variables are fixed before the process starts. An example of application of the method is tak…

Conflict resolution in the multi-stakeholder stepped spillway design under uncertainty by machine learning techniques

2021

Abstract The optimal spillway design is of great significance since these structures can reduce erosion downstream of the dams. This study proposes a risk-based optimization framework for a stepped spillway to achieve an economical design scenario with the minimum loss in hydraulic performance. Accordingly, the stepped spillway was simulated in the FLOW-3D® model, and the validated model was repeatedly performed for various geometric states. The results were used to form a Multilayer Perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) surrogate model. Then, a risk-based optimization model was formed by coupling the MLP-ANN and NSGA-II. The concept of conditional value at risk (CVaR) was utilized…

On the influence of the initial ramp for a correct definition of the parameters of fractional viscoelastic materials

2014

Creep and/or Relaxation tests on viscoelastic materials show a power-law trend. Based upon Boltzmann superposition principle the constitutive law with a power-law kernel is ruled by the Caputo's fractional derivative. Fractional constitutive law posses a long memory and then the parameters obtained by best fitting procedures on experimental data are strongly influenced by the prestress on the specimen. As in fact during the relaxation test the imposed history of deformation is not instantaneously applied, since a unit step function may not be realized by the test machine. Usually an initial ramp is present in the deformation history and the time at which the deformation attains the maximum …

Error bounds for a convexity-preserving interpolation and its limit function

2008

AbstractError bounds between a nonlinear interpolation and the limit function of its associated subdivision scheme are estimated. The bounds can be evaluated without recursive subdivision. We show that this interpolation is convexity preserving, as its associated subdivision scheme. Finally, some numerical experiments are presented.

Approximation-Based Adaptive Fuzzy Tracking Control for a Class of Nonstrict-Feedback Stochastic Nonlinear Time-Delay Systems

2015

This paper focuses on the problem of approximation-based adaptive fuzzy tracking control for a class of stochastic nonlinear time-delay systems with a nonstrict-feedback structure. A variable separation approach is introduced to overcome the design difficulty from the nonstrict-feedback structure. Mamdani-type fuzzy logic systems are utilized to model the unknown nonlinear functions in the process of controller design, and an adaptive fuzzy tracking controller is systematically designed by using a backstepping technique. It is shown that the proposed controller guarantees that all signals in the closed-loop system are fourth-moment semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded, and the tracking…

Robust and Efficient IMEX Schemes for Option Pricing under Jump-Diffusion Models

2013

We propose families of IMEX time discretization schemes for the partial integro-differential equation derived for the pricing of options under a jump diffusion process. The schemes include the families of IMEX-midpoint, IMEXCNAB and IMEX-BDF2 schemes. Each family is defined by a convex parameter c ∈ [0, 1], which divides the zeroth-order term due to the jumps between the implicit and explicit part in the time discretization. These IMEX schemes lead to tridiagonal systems, which can be solved extremely efficiently. The schemes are studied through Fourier stability analysis and numerical experiments. It is found that, under suitable assumptions and time step restrictions, the IMEX-midpoint fa…

Subsignal-based denoising from piecewise linear or constant signal

2011

15 pages; International audience; n the present work, a novel signal denoising technique for piecewise constant or linear signals is presented termed as "signal split." The proposed method separates the sharp edges or transitions from the noise elements by splitting the signal into different parts. Unlike many noise removal techniques, the method works only in the nonorthogonal domain. The new method utilizes Stein unbiased risk estimate (SURE) to split the signal, Lipschitz exponents to identify noise elements, and a polynomial fitting approach for the sub signal reconstruction. At the final stage, merging of all parts yield in the fully denoised signal at a very low computational cost. St…

Cascade Controller Including Backstepping for Hydraulic-Mechanical Systems

2012

Abstract Development of a cascade controller structure including adaptive backstepping for a nonlinear hydraulic-mechanical system is considered in this paper where a dynamic friction (LuGre) model is included to obtain the necessary accuracy. The paper compares the performance of two variants of an adaptive backstepping tracking controller with earlier results. The new control architecture is analysed and enhanced tracking performance is demonstrated when including the extended friction model. The complexity of the backstepping procedure is significantly reduced due to the cascade structure. Hence, the proposed control structure is better suited to real-time implementation.

Reconstruction of the paleoenvironmental changes around the Miocene-Pliocene boundary along a W-E transect across the Mediterranean

2006

Abstract In order to reconstruct the environmental changes at the end of the Messinian salinity crisis, a multidisciplinary study has been carried out with a high sampling resolution of the late Messinian–early Zanclean (Zone MPl 1) sediments along a West–East Mediterranean transect. The studied examples comprise sections from southern Spain (Vera/Almanzora), Balearic Basin (ODP Site 975), Tyrrhenian Basin (ODP Site 974), Sicily (Eraclea Minoa), Zakynthos (Kalamaki), Corfu (Aghios Stefanos), Crete (Aghios Vlasis). Previously analyzed sections from the Levantine Basin (Cyprus and ODP Sites 968 and 969) are used for comparison. The sections have been correlated using planktonic foraminiferal …

The Arrival of Steppe and Iranian Related Ancestry in the Islands of the Western Mediterranean

2019

A series of studies have documented how Steppe pastoralist-related ancestry reached central Europe by at least 2500 BCE, while Iranian farmer-related ancestry was present in Aegean Europe by at least 1900 BCE. However, the spread of these ancestries into the western Mediterranean where they have contributed to many populations living today remains poorly understood. We generated genome-wide ancient DNA from the Balearic Islands, Sicily, and Sardinia, increasing the number of individuals with reported data from these islands from 3 to 52. We obtained data from the oldest skeleton excavated from the Balearic islands (dating to ∼2400 BCE), and show that this individual had substantial Steppe p…
