Testing for Government Intertemporal Solvency: A Smooth Transition Error Correction Model Approach

2001

Applied macroeconomists have tested for the government intertemporal solvency condition by either testing for linear stationarity in the total government deficit series or testing for linear cointegration between total government spending and total tax revenues. A number of authors have focused, in particular, on structural breaks in the government deficit process. In this paper, we use a smooth transition error correction model to test and estimate a shift in the adjustment toward a linear cointegration relationship between the government spending to output ratio and the total tax revenues to output ratio. Estimation results show that government authorities react only to large (in absolute…

Cultural References and Linguistic Exponents of Gender in the Norwegian Translation of Michał Witkowski’s Lubiewo

2019

The novel Lubiewo by the Polish writer Michal Witkowski has been called by its reviewers “a homosexual Decamerone.” The atmosphere of the book ranges from bright situational comic through bizarre tragicomic to serious reflection, and the narration structure resembles Boccaccio’s. The heroes (or heroines) of the novel belong to a complicated and internally split world of Polish homosexuals. Their sociolects and registers are, at first glance, barely translatable into Germanic languages: partly because of the Polish grammatical gender system, partly because of their extremely deep anchoring in the Polish culture. In this chapter, the Norwegian translation of Lubiewo is compared to the novel’s…

Isolation of carcinoembryonic antigen N-terminal domains (N-A1) from soluble aggregates

2011

Abstract Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was identified as a prominent tumor-associated antigen in human colorectal cancer and it is still intensively investigated. However, its physiological role remains unclear. The CEA molecule is composed of seven highly hydrophobic, immunoglobulin-like domains, six of which contain a single disulphide bridge. The production of recombinant protein containing Ig-like domains in bacterial expression systems often results in partial degradation or insolubility due to aggregation hampering the analysis of their native structure and function. Here, we present a new method of expression and purification of CEA N-terminal domains (N-A1) fused to MBP in Escheric…

Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel

1798

Mutations in DNA Binding and Transactivation Domains Affect the Dynamics of Parvovirus NS1 Protein

2013

ABSTRACT The multifunctional replication protein of autonomous parvoviruses, NS1, is vital for viral genome replication and for the control of viral protein production. Two DNA-interacting domains of NS1, the N-terminal and helicase domains, are necessary for these functions. In addition, the N and C termini of NS1 are required for activation of viral promoter P38. By comparison with the structural and biochemical data from other parvoviruses, we identified potential DNA-interacting amino acid residues from canine parvovirus NS1. The role of the identified amino acids in NS1 binding dynamics was studied by mutagenesis, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, and computer simulations. Mu…

Fluorine Scan of Inhibitors of the Cysteine Protease Human Cathepsin L: Dipolar and Quadrupolar Effects in the π-Stacking of Fluorinated Phenyl Rings…

2016

The π-stacking of fluorinated benzene rings on protein backbone amide groups was investigated, using a dual approach comprising enzyme-ligand binding studies complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. In the experimental study, the phenyl substituent of triazine nitrile inhibitors of human cathepsin L (hCatL), which stacks onto the peptide amide bond Gly67-Gly68 at the entrance of the S3 pocket, was systematically fluorinated, and differences in inhibitory potency were measured in a fluorimetric assay. Binding affinity is influenced by lipophilicity (clog P), the dipole and quadrupole moments of the fluorinated rings, but also by additional interactions of the introduced fluo…

Analysis of Spanish nursing students' knowledge in palliative care. An online survey in five colleges.

2020

Abstract Along their professional career, nurses can find patients who require palliative care (PC). It is necessary to have at least a basic education in this area, that should be acquired during their university education. The objective of this descriptive online-survey set in five nursing Colleges was to analyze Spanish nursing students’ knowledge in PC, offering an image of the status of education in PC. 619 students took an online questionnaire with the Spanish version of the Palliative Care Quiz for Nurses (PCQN-SV), which also collected information about their education in the field of PC. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed, and a predictive binary logistic regression m…

Interaction of iron(II)-heme and artemisinin with a peptide mimic of Plasmodium falciparum HRP-II

2007

Abstract The interaction of heme or heme-artemisinin adducts (heme-art) with different peptides mimicking repeat sequences of the Histidine-Rich-Protein-II of Plasmodium falciparum (PfHRP-II) was investigated. The pseudo-first order rate constants of the coordination of heme or heme-art onto a histidine rich peptide, used as a mimic of PfHRP-II putative heme binding sequence, are of the same order of magnitude, namely 42 and 14 s −1 , respectively. Despite the intrinsic reactivity of the carbonyl at C10 of heme-art toward a hydroxyl function, a peptide containing a serine or threonine residue does not readily react with heme-art adducts. Therefore, a much higher affinity of heme-art compare…

Heme symmetry, vibronic structure, and dynamics in heme proteins: ferrous nicotinate horse myoglobin and soybean leghemoglobin.

2000

We report the visible and Soret absorption bands, down to cryogenic temperatures, of the ferrous nicotinate adducts of native and deuteroheme reconstituted horse heart myoglobin in comparison with soybean leghemoglobin-a. The band profile in the visible region is analyzed in terms of vibronic coupling of the heme normal modes to the electronic transition in the framework of the Herzberg–Teller approximation. This theoretical approach makes use of the crude Born–Oppenheimer states and therefore neglects the mixing between electronic and vibrational coordinates; however, it takes into account the vibronic nature of the visible absorption bands and allows an estimate of the vibronic side bands…
