Mammalian BiP controls posttranslational ER translocation of the hepatitis B virus large envelope protein.

2008

AbstractThe hepatitis B virus L protein forms a dual topology in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) via a process involving cotranslational membrane integration and subsequent posttranslational translocation of its preS subdomain. Here, we show that preS posttranslocation depends on the action of the ER chaperone BiP. To modulate the in vivo BiP activity, we designed an approach based on overexpressing its positive and negative regulators, ER-localized DnaJ-domain containing protein 4 (ERdj4) and BiP-associated protein (BAP), respectively. The feasibility of this approach was confirmed by demonstrating that BAP, but not ERdj4, destabilizes the L/BiP complex. Overexpressing BAP or ERdj4 inhibits…

Lucretius Franco-Hibernicus: Dicuil’s Liber de Astronomia and the Carolingian Reception of De Rerum Natura

2020

Abstract Since its coinage in the nineteenth century, the concept of Carolingian renaissance has been primarily based on the revival of classical texts promoted by Charlemagne and his successors. Among the positive consequences of Carolingian classicism is the careful—if discreet—preservation of the text of Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura, which survives in three valuable ninth-century manuscripts. Whereas rigorous philological studies of these manuscripts have been offered, little attention has been paid to their role in, and connection with, the reception of Lucretius in ninth-century literature. It has been generally assumed that for the Carolingians the DRN was essentially a source for gram…

Assessing the metacognitive reading awareness of Finnish high school students

2015

Kyky lukea akateemisia tekstejä englannin kielellä on entistä tärkeämpi taito kolmannen asteen koulutuksessa. Pohja tälle taidolle muodostuu toisen asteen koulutuksessa, eli useimmiten lukiossa. Toisen kielen – useimmiten siis englannin – opetussuunnitelman neljäs kurssi keskittyy lukustrategioiden opettamiseen. Lukustrategioita opetetaan, koska niillä on tutkitusti merkitystä etenkin haastavissa toisen kielen teksteissä, joita oppilaat tulevat kohtaamaan. ”Strategia” ymmärretään usein tietoiseksi prosessiksi, jossa lukija on tietoinen käyttäessään strategiaa. Tietoisuuden ollessa mukana puhutaan metakognitiivisista lukustrategioista. Näiden strategioiden käyttöön on luotu kysely, jota tämä…

Light-induced Changes in the Dimerization Interface of Bacteriophytochromes

2015

Phytochromes are dimeric photoreceptor proteins that sense red light levels in plants, fungi, and bacteria. The proteins are structurally divided into a light-sensing photosensory module consisting of PAS, GAF, and PHY domains and a signaling output module, which in bacteriophytochromes typically is a histidine kinase (HK) domain. Existing structural data suggest that two dimerization interfaces exist between the GAF and HK domains, but their functional roles remain unclear. Using mutational, biochemical, and computational analyses of the Deinococcus radiodurans phytochrome, we demonstrate that two dimerization interfaces between sister GAF and HK domains stabilize the dimer with approximat…

Franc cavallier de bona fe, v. 8466 : su alcuni elementi intertestuali nel Jaufre

2020

On a very original narrative system, Jaufre's novel is constructed through inter-textual references and relationships withmany contemporary romance texts. The work presented here tries to highlight specific relationships that connect thenovel with the Première Continuation Perceval and with the novel by Renaut de Beaujeu Le Bel Inconnu.

Faculty Perception of Inclusion in the University: Concept, Policies and Educational Practices

2021

European universities must face the challenge of diversity and design inclusive practices to address it as part of their social responsibility. However, not all universities are doing the same in terms of diversity practices, so it is important to gather the perceptions of the protagonists. To this end, we have analysed university faculty’s perceptions using a mixed model with a concurrent methodological strategy, including an ad hoc questionnaire validated with 880 educators, as well as 17 semi‐structured interviews. The triangulation of these two instruments allowed us to analyse three key dimensions associated with the idea of attention to diversity in the university: diversity concept o…

Ocean acidification and elevated temperature negatively affect recruitment, oxygen consumption and calcification of the reef-building Dendropoma cris…

2019

Expected temperature rise and seawater pH decrease may affect marine organism fitness. By a transplant experiment involving air-temperature manipulation along a natural CO2 gradient, we investigated the effects of high pCO(2) (similar to 1100 mu atm) and elevated temperature (up to +2 degrees C than ambient conditions) on the reproductive success, recruitment, growth, shell chemical composition and oxygen consumption of the early life stages of the intertidal reef-building vermetid Dendropoma cristatum. Reproductive success was predominantly affected by temperature increase, with encapsulated embryos exhibiting higher survival in control than elevated temperature conditions, which were in t…

Sponge Bcl-2 homologous protein (BHP2-GC) confers distinct stress resistance to human HEK-293 cells

2001

It is established that sponges, the phylogenetically oldest still extant phylum of Metazoa, possess key molecules of the apoptotic pathways, that is members from the Bcl-2 family and a pro-apoptotic molecule with death domains. Here we report on transfection studies of human cells with a sponge gene, GCBHP2. Sponge tissue was exposed to heat shock and tributyltin, which caused an upregulation of gene expression of GCBHP2. The cDNA GCBHP2 was introduced into human HEK-293 cells and mouse NIH-3T3 cells; the stable transfection was confirmed by the identification of the transcripts, by Western blotting as well as by immunofluorescence using antibodies raised against the recombinant polypeptide…
