Learning from nature: beta-sheet-mimicking copolymers get organized.
2007
The solution structures formed by coil-coil copolymers arise from the selective solvation of one of the two blocks and have been well described. In most cases in such relatively simple synthetic structures there are no specific attractive forces that can aid the aggregation process. Nature, however, provides plenty of inspiring polymeric architectures that are shaped and ordered hierarchically by noncovalent forces. The high level of structural definition displayed by proteins, for example, is unmatched by synthetic polymers. An emerging area of interest in polymer science tries to combine the best of both worlds, the natural and the synthetic, by conjugating synthetic polymers and beta-she…
Anorektinen teksti : anoreksian esittämiskeinot Kira Poutasen romaanissa Ihana meri
2011
Käsittelen tutkimuksessani Kira Poutasen romaania Ihanaa merta (2001) anoreksian kuvaajana. Tekstin tasolla niukkuus esiintyy puolestaan tekstimateriaalin vähenemisenä. Tärkeitä lähtökohtia tutkimukselleni ovat päiväkirjafiktiotutkimus, toiston…
Emerging Tiger? The Paradoxes of the Philippine Economy
2017
The Republic of the Philippines is an exception in the East and Southeast Asia realm. One of the richest countries of the region at the end of World War II, its rankings have slipped, and its growth rates have been weak for several decades. We examine the main causes of the mediocre economic performance of the country since the 1950s. Many analysts have pointed out an excessive bureaucracy, high levels of corruption and the lack of industrial investment in a country dominated by landed interests. After the high debt incurred during the Marcos administration, Philippine leaders have made every effort to improve the debt situation, choosing to pay back loans, but under investing in infrastruc…
Giving up Farming as a Precarious Decision
2015
‘Precarity’ is a novel noun that is widely recognized and applied in timely political discourses and socioeconomic diagnoses of the present. It refers to fixed-term, temporary, low-paid, insecure, unpredictable, and often risky work. The occupational position of precarious people has been characterized as flexible or flexploitative, informal, casual, intermittent, non-standard, exceptional, often outsourced, or subcontracted. ‘Precarity’ is typically seen to characterize young people, women, immigrants, and service sector workers; but particular segments of creative and immaterial ‘new labour’ are also identified with the ‘precariat’. However, in spite of all these groupings, lists, and clu…
Validation of a measure of Service Climate in organizations
2012
Sequence evolution, processing, and posttranslational modification of zonadhesin D domains in primates, as inferred from cDNA data
2005
Zonadhesin is a mammalian transmembrane sperm ligand. Precursor zonadhesin essentially consists of MAM (meprin/A5 antigen/mu receptor tyrosine phosphatase) domains, a mucin-like repeat, and D domains (homologous to von Willebrand D). Recent immunovisualization and binding assays indicate that zonadhesin D domains 1–3 bind postacrosomally to the zona pellucida. This feature has attracted considerable interest in the evolution of zonadhesin and its possible biological and biomedical implications. Previous molecular evolutionary analyses, however, were confined to cDNA sequences of only few distantly related species. Moreover, except for rabbit and pig, little is known about zonadhesin’s proce…
UNA FITTA RETE DI RAPPORTI INTERTESTUALI: SHAKESPEARE, COLERIDGE E ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPÉRY NEI VERSI DI FUGA E IL SUPERSTITE DI PRIMO LEVI
2020
Ongoing Economic Restructuring in the Wake of the Latest Economic Crisis: A Russian Perspective
2013
Abstract The latest economic crisis has brought into focus long-standing discussions regarding the role played by services in contemporary economies. Whether viewed as a support for the well-established manufacturing sector, or growth engine in its own right, the third economic sector has become a focus point for policy makers worldwide. The paper follows the effects of the crisis on the tertiarization process, with an emphasis on developing economies, where this phenomenon is barely coming of age. The research is centered on the IT market, as this is seen as a comprehensive measure of the maturity and sophistication of the services sector.
Pathways to higher education for first and second generation immigrants in France, Switzerland and Canada: how educational tracks and aspirations mat…
2014
Despite their different histories as countries of immigration, Switzerland, France and Canada all have a sizeable immigrant population, some of which do experience obstacles in their educational and professional careers. However, both access rates of immigrant students as well as institutional routes to higher education vary remarkably between the three countries. On the one hand, France and Switzerland offer both academic and vocational routes to higher education, whereas academic routes prevail in Canada. On the other hand, immigrant students are underrepresented in Swiss and French higher education, while they generally seem to be much more successful in Canada. In this paper we wish to …
Teacher competencies in game-based pedagogy
2018
This study examines what kind of competencies teachers need in using game-based pedagogy (GBP). In our conceptual framework, GBP entails four approaches: using educational games or entertainment games, learning by making games, and using gamification in learning. Our data, consisting of teachers’ documentation, thematic interviews and questionnaires, were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Four main competence areas were identified: pedagogical, technological, collaborative and creative. The results are applicable for developing teacher education and in-service training, as teacher competencies in game-based learning will be more integral to teachers’ professional knowledge and sk…
