Nontraditional configuration of tuned liquid column damper inerter for base-isolated structures
2023
In this paper, the concept of a novel passive control device, namely the Nontraditional Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (NT-TLCDI), is investigated in combination with seismic base isolation (BI), to control lateral displacement demands in base-isolated structures during seismic events. The considered NT-TLCDI is a revision of the ordinary configuration of the recently proposed Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (TLCDI). Unlike the traditional TLCDI layout, which involves a secondary liquid mass in a U-shaped tank coupled with a grounded inerter and connected to the isolation system by a spring-dashpot system, in the NT-TLCDI configuration, the damper is in parallel with the inerter rath…
Earthquake Excited Base-Isolated Structures Protected by Tuned Liquid Column Dampers: Design Approach and Experimental Verification
2017
Abstract In this contribution a direct approach for optimal design of a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) device attached to the base slab of a base-isolated structure is presented, aiming at reducing the seismic displacement demand of the base-isolation subsystem. Assuming white noise base excitation, for a wide parameter range a direct optimization procedure yields design charts for optimal TLCD quantities. The performance of the base-isolated structure equipped with optimally tuned TLCD device in comparison to the simple base-isolated one is evaluated both numerically and experimentally. In a numerical study the system is subjected to the 44 records of the FEMA P-695 far-field ground mot…
Mini Wind Plant to Power Telecommunication Systems: a Case Study in Sicily
2013
The ever increasing problems related to air pollution and the difficulties for power lines to reach inaccessible areas are pushing to find new solutions for powering telecommunications equipments (TLC). The renewable energy systems, although relatively expensive, have the required characteristics. The purpose of this work is to find a solution based on a low power wind turbine to serve a real telecommunication site located near Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy).

Chromatogrphic Profiles of Polyphenols and Terpenoids in the Herbs of Some Thymus L. Represntatives
2022
The aim of the work. To perform the identification of phenolic compounds and terpenoids in the aerial parts of Thymus pulegioides L. (cultivar ‘2/6-07’), Thymus richardii Pers. (cultivar 'Fantasy') and Thymus vulgaris L. (cultivar ‘Jalos’) using thin layer chromatography (TLC), as well as to conduct the gaschromatographic analysis of Thymus richardii essential oil. Materials and Methods. The TLC method was used in this study for the qualitative analyses of polyphenols and non-polar compounds in the aerial part of three Thyme (Thymus L.) species from the Lamiaceae Martinov family cultivated in Kherson region (Ukraine). The volatile compounds were determined in the essential oil of Thymus ric…
Antioxidant activity and chemical composition of three Tunisian Cistus: Cistus monspeliensis Cistus villosus and Cistus libanotis
2015
The chemical composition of three rockrose Cistus species, Cistus monspeliensis, Cistus libanotis and Cistus villosus, collected in Tunisia, was studied by HPTLC, focusing on the terpenes and phenols constituents. Diterpenes of Cistus are important as the main constituents of the leaf sticky aromatic resin, known as labdanum, which are highly appreciated in perfumery. Polyphenols in the methanolic extracts of each species were identified, quantified as total and as flavonoids and tannins, and tested for antioxidant activity. Diterpenes were evident in C. libanotis and C. monspeliensis, whereas they were practically absent in C. villosus; C. libanotis had higher phenolic amount, whereas anti…

Chromatographic Profiles of the main Secondary Metabolites in the Monarda fistulosa L. Aerial Part
2021
Two different methods of chromatographic analysis have been used in this study for the phytochemical evaluation of main secondary metabolites in the aerial part of bee balm (Monarda fistulosa L.) as the non-officinal medicinal plant of the Lamiaceae Martinov family. The high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprinting method was developed for the qualitative analyses of phenolic and non-polar compounds in the bee balm herb after its maceration in the solvents of different polarity. Such polyphenols as rosmarinic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids were authentically identified in the methanol extract of herb using HPTLC. Aromatic monoterpenoid thymol was identified by the HPTLC …
