Ionic liquids (ILs) are employed in several fields thanks to their well-known properties. For a long time, ILs were considered the “green” alternative to conventional organic solvents.1 However, the increasing attention on environmental health led to consider different ILs structures and alternative synthetic pathways. Economical aspects, toxicity, and environmental fate of cerium oxide

Abstract The present chapter reports some economical aspects of the cerium oxide market. Porter’s and PESTEL analyses have been used to evidence the strengths and weaknesses of the ceria market, along with the potentiality and opportunities within the years to come. The wide use of CeO2 nanoparticles in many applications requires to consider also issues related to their toxicity and environmental fate. In this regard, some contradictory reports in the relevant literature have been surveyed, thus highlighting the need for further and detailed investigation on these topics in order to propose effective strategies of risk assessment and environmental remediation.

Galvanic Deposition of Calcium Phosphate/Bioglass Composite Coating on AISI 316L

Calcium phosphate/Bioglass composite coatings on AISI 316L were investigated with regard to their potential role as a beneficial coating for orthopedic implants. These coatings were realized by the galvanic co-deposition of calcium phosphate compounds and Bioglass particles. A different amount of Bioglass 45S5 was used to study its effect on the performance of the composite coatings. The morphology and chemical composition of the coatings were investigated before and after their aging in simulated body fluid. The coatings uniformly covered the AISI 316L substrate and consisted of a brushite and hydroxyapatite mixture. Both phases were detected using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.…

Combining conventional chemotherapy and γδ T cell-based immunotherapy to target cancer-initiating cells.

Colon cancer comprises a small population of cancer initiating stem cells (CIC) that is responsible for tumor maintenance and resistance to anti-cancer therapies, possibly allowing for tumor recapitulation once treatment stops. Combinations of immune-based therapies with chemotherapy and other anti-tumor agents may be of significant clinical benefit in the treatment of colon cancer. However, cellular immune-based therapies have not been experimented yet in the population of colon CICs. A series of N-methyl-N-(2-triorganylsiloxyethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro(iso)quinolinium iodides has been synthesized via dehydrocondensation reaction of N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline and 4,4-dimethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-sila-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline with trialkyl(aryl)hydrosilanes and subsequent alkylation, and characterized by 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR and mass spectroscopy. To report dosimetric and acute toxicity data in prospectively enrolled high-intermediate risk endometrial cancer (HIR-EC) patients postoperatively irradiated by simultaneous integrated boost volumetric modulated arc therapy (SIB-VMAT).
