Syntactic Variance and Priming Effects in Translation

The present work investigates the relationship between syntactic variation and priming in translation. It is based on the claim that languages share a common cognitive network of neural activity. When the source and target languages are solicited in a translation context, this shared network can lead to facilitation effects, so-called priming effects. We suggest that priming is a default setting in translation, a special case of language use where source and target languages are constantly co-activated. An eye tracking comparison of external pointing cues and internal continuous cues in learning with complex animations

Abstract Two experiments used eye tracking to investigate a novel cueing approach for directing learner attention to low salience, high relevance aspects of a complex animation. In the first experiment, comprehension of a piano mechanism animation containing spreading-colour cues was compared with comprehension obtained with arrow cues or no cues. Eye tracking data revealed differences in learner attention patterns between the different experimental conditions. Physical Activity Tracker Application in Promoting Physical Activity Behavior among Older Adults : A 24-month Follow-Up Study

Counting by Statistics on Search Trees: Application to Constraint Satisfaction Problems

In 1975, Knuth proposed a simple statistical method for investigating search trees. We use this technique for estimating the number of solutions of constraint satisfaction problem CSP and boolean satisfiability problem SAT instances. We show that, depending on domain reductions, tree-based estimates have a lower variance than estimates based on uniform sampling from the search space. Nevertheless, because the variance remains extremely high in the general case, a confidence interval cannot be derived, but a lower bound of the number of solutions. These results are confirmed by many experiments.

Kinematic calibration method for a 5-DOF Gantry-Tau parallel kinematic machine

In this paper a new step-wise approach to kinematic calibration of a 5-DOF Gantry-Tau parallel kinematic machine (PKM) is presented. The approach can be adapted to the modular design of the PKM and the calibration could easily perform part of the assembly instructions for the machine. By using measurements from a laser tracker and least-squares estimates of polynomial functions, a typical accuracy of about 20 micrometer was achieved for the base actuators. The remaining set of 30 general parameters for the hexapod link structure and spherical joint connections were successfully estimated using the Complex search-based evolutionary algorithm.
