On the performances of a particle tracking detector based on triangular scintillator bars read out by silicon photomultipliers

Abstract A tracking detector composed of scintillator bars with a triangular cross-section read out by silicon photomultipliers in analog mode was developed. The tracker was designed to instrument a low density spectrometer for neutrino experiments. The performance of the system has been studied by exposing it to charged particle beams at the CERN-PS. The tests have shown that the position resolution in reconstructing charged particles’ tracks is within 2.2 mm over the momentum range 0.5–10 GeV/c.

Silicon detectors for the sLHC

In current particle physics experiments, silicon strip detectors are widely used as part of the inner tracking layers. A foreseeable large-scale application for such detectors consists of the luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the super-LHC or sLHC, where silicon detectors with extreme radiation hardness are required. The mission statement of the CERN RD50 Collaboration is the development of radiation-hard semiconductor devices for very high luminosity colliders. As a consequence, the aim of the RandD programme presented in this article is to develop silicon particle detectors able to operate at sLHC conditions. In situ and postradiation analysis of mechanical stress in Al2O3:Cr induced by swift heavy-ion irradiation

Abstract Optical spectroscopy and TEM techniques have been applied to study the radiation damage and correlated mechanical stresses in Al2O3 and Al2O3:Cr single crystals induced by (1–3) MeV/amu Kr, Xe and Bi ion irradiation. Mechanical stresses were evaluated in situ using a piezospectroscopic effect through the shift of the respective lines in ionoluminescence spectra. It was found that dose dependence of the stress level for Xe and Bi ions, when ionization energy loss exceeds the threshold of damage formation via electronic excitations, exhibits several alternate stages showing the build-up and relaxation of stresses. The BLAST experiment

The Bates large acceptance spectrometer toroid (BLAST) experiment was operated at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center from 2003 until 2005. The detector and experimental program were designed to study, in a systematic manner, the spin-dependent electromagnetic interaction in few-nucleon systems. As such the data will provide improved measurements for neutron, proton, and deuteron form factors. The data will also allow details of the reaction mechanism, such as the role of final state interactions, pion production, and resonances to be studied. Studies for low mass, large area monolithic silicon pixel detector modules using the MALTA CMOS pixel chip

Abstract The MALTA monolithic silicon pixel sensors have been used to study dicing and thinning of monolithic silicon pixel detectors for large area and low mass modules. Dicing as close as possible to the active circuitry will allow to build modules with very narrow inactive regions between the sensors. Inactive edge regions of less than 5 μ m to the electronic circuitry could be achieved for 100 μ m thick sensors. The MALTA chip (Cardella et al., 2019) also offers the possibility to transfer data and power directly from chip to chip. A spin rotator for producing a longitudinally polarized electron beam with MAMI

Abstract The design and performance characteristics of a full 4 π-space spin rotator for 100 keV electrons are described. The spin rotator was developed as part of the acceleration scheme for polarized electrons in the MAINZ race track microtron cascade MAMI [1]. It allows to orientate the polarization vector in any direction before injection. Thus it is possible to optimize the longitudinal polarization component, required for experiments with polarized high energy electrons, at target position. With this scheme various experimental halls can be supplied with longitudinally polarized electrons in the full energy range of MAMI between 180 and 855 MeV.

Absence of delayed fission in the? ?-decay of 2.3 min238Pa

1985

We have searched for beta-delayed fission in the decay of 2.3 min238Pa produced in the238U(n,p) reaction with 14.7 MeV neutrons. Through microprocessor-controlled chemical separations of protactinium about 109 atoms of238Pa were isolated and exposed to fission track detectors. From the absence of fission tracks an upper limit for the betadelayed fission probability of238Pa, i.e.Pβf<2.6 10−8, is obtained at 95% confidence level. This rules out positive evidence for this decay mode of238Pa reported elsewhere. Simple theoretical estimates ofPβf range from 10−7 to 10−9.

How social network sites and other online intermediaries increase exposure to news

Research has prominently assumed that social media and web portals that aggregate news restrict the diversity of content that users are exposed to by tailoring news diets toward the users’ preferences. In our empirical test of this argument, we apply a random-effects within–between model to two large representative datasets of individual web browsing histories. This approach allows us to better encapsulate the effects of social media and other intermediaries on news exposure. We find strong evidence that intermediaries foster more varied online news diets. The results call into question fears about the vanishing potential for incidental news exposure in digital media environments.

The Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) program is a referral for evaluating oncology practices worldwide.
