Exploring the unknowns : State of the art in qualitative forest-based sector foresight research

2022

The forest-based sector is facing one the greatest transitions in its history in the face of global megatrends. Globalization, sustainability challenges and the ICT sector have put the world in a new light. Whereas some of the recent developments have resulted in challenges for the traditional forest industry, many positive expectations and opportunities are also seen to arise in the form of the transition to a sustainable bio-economy. However, to be able to fully seize the opportunity, the industry has to navigate through contingency where preparedness can have a major impact. Foresight as a strategic approach can help to prepare and sensitize decision-makers to be prepared for the future.…

Behavior of plant plasma membranes under hydrostatic pressure as monitored by fluorescent environment-sensitive probes.

2010

International audience; We monitored the behavior of plasma membrane (PM) isolated from tobacco cells (BY-2) under hydrostatic pressures up to 3.5 kbar at 30 °C, by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy using the newly introduced environment-sensitive probe F2N12S and also Laurdan and di-4-ANEPPDHQ. The consequences of sterol depletion by methyl-β-cyclodextrin were also studied. We found that application of hydrostatic pressure led to a marked decrease of hydration as probed by F2N12S and to an increase of the generalized polarization excitation (GPex) of Laurdan. We observed that the hydration effect of sterol depletion was maximal between 1 and 1.5 kbar but was much less important at hig…

Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) membrane BioReactor: The influence of the operational parameters

2020

Abstract The present paper investigated an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) Membrane BioReactor (MBR) system monitored for 340 days. In particular, the short-term effects of some operational parameters variation was evaluated. Results showed a decrease of the removal rates under low C/N values. Respirometry results highlighted that activated sludge was more active in the organic carbon removal. Conversely, biofilm has a key role during nitrification. The major fouling mechanism was represented by the cake deposition (irreversible).

Functional rearrangement of the light-harvesting antenna upon state transitions in a green alga

2014

AbstractState transitions in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii serve to balance excitation energy transfer to photosystem I (PSI) and to photosystem II (PSII) and possibly play a role as a photoprotective mechanism. Thus, light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) can switch between the photosystems consequently transferring more excitation energy to PSII (state 1) or to PSI (state 2) or can end up in LHCII-only domains. In this study, low-temperature (77 K) steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measured on intact cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii shows that independently of the state excitation energy transfer from LHCII to PSI or to PSII occurs on two main timescales of <15 ps and …

Small-scale patches of detritus as habitat for invertebrates within a Zostera noltei meadow

2021

Abstract Seagrass detritus can attract numerous invertebrates as it provides food and substrate within the meadow or in adjacent environments. Nonetheless, several factors could modify the invertebrate response to this habitat. In this study, we tested if epifaunal colonisation of Zostera noltei detritus was related to substrate availability rather than food and whether colonising assemblages were similar according to the meadow structural complexity. Litterbags filled with natural or artificial detritus were deployed within an eelgrass meadow in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Thau lagoon, France). Colonisation appeared to be driven by the presence of detritus, with similar assemblages in …

Anhydrobiosis: Inside yeast cells

2018

International audience; Under natural conditions yeast cells as well as other microorganisms are regularly subjected to the influence of severe drought, which leads to their serious dehydration. The dry seasons are then changed by rains and there is a restoration of normal water potential inside the cells. To survive such seasonal changes a lot of vegetative microbial cells, which belong to various genera and species, may be able to enter into a state of anhydrobiosis, in which their metabolism is temporarily and reversibly suspended or delayed. This evolutionarily developed adaptation to extreme conditions of the environment is widely used for practical goals - for conservation of microorg…

NIR-absorbing transition metal complexes with redox-active ligands

2020

Bench top stable transition metal (M = Co, Ni, Cu) complexes with a non-innocent ortho-aminophenol derivative were synthesized by the reaction of metal(II)acetates with a ligand precursor in 2:1 ratio. The solid-state structures reveal the formation of neutral molecular complexes with square planar coordination geometries. The Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes are paramagnetic, whereas the Ni complex is a diamagnetic square planar low-spin Ni(II) complex. All complexes, and Ni(II) complex in particular, show strong absorption in the near-IR region. Peer reviewed

Transition to turbulence in serpentine pipes

2017

Abstract The geometry considered in the present work (serpentine pipe) is a sequence of U-bends of alternate curvature. It is characterized by pipe diameter, d = 2a and bend diameter, D = 2c. The repeated curvature inversion forces the secondary flow pattern, typical of all flows in curved ducts, to switch between two mirror-like configurations. This causes (i) pressure drop and heat or mass transfer characteristics much different from those occurring either in a straight pipe or in a constant-curvature pipe, and (ii) an early loss of stability of the base steady-state flow. In the present work, four values of the curvature δ = a/c (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) were considered. For each value of …

A new approach to simulate coating thickness in cold spray

2020

Abstract In the process of cold spray on complex components, the coating thickness is an important indicator to monitor and control. Current methods such as destructive tests or direct mechanical measurements can only be performed after spraying. Besides, these methods lead to production shutdown and additional costs . This article presents a novel approach predicting coating thickness for components with complex curved surfaces, especially in the case of shadow effects. Firstly, a three-dimensional geometric model of the coating profile based on Gaussian distribution was developed. In addition, the relative deposition efficiency (RDE) resulting from the different robot kinematic parameters…
