Evaluation of the sequestering ability of different complexones towards Ag+ ion

2014

Abstract The interaction between Ag+ cation and different ligands was evaluated as a function of temperature and ionic strength by means of potentiometric techniques. Six aminopolycarboxylic (APCs) and aminopolyphosphonic (APPs) ligands were chosen, namely four APCs: nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), ethylene-glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N’,N’-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), ethylenediamine-N,N,N’,N’-tetraacetate (EDTA) and diethylenetriamine-N,N,N’,N”,N”-pentaacetic acid (DTPA)] and two APPs: [(1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diyl)bis(phosphonic acid) (HEDP) and [[(Phosphonomethyl)imino]bis[2,1-ethanediylnitrilobis(methylene)]] tetrakis-phosphonic acid (DTPP). Different mononuclear species with general formu…

Rat Plasma VLDL Composition and Concentration and Hepatic Lipase and Lipoprotein Lipase Activities Are Impaired during Two Types of Protein Malnutrit…

1995

The relationships between VLDL concentrations and composition and changes in hepatic lipase and lipoprotein lipase activities were determined in rats, during the consumption of two low protein diets (2% casein or 5% gluten) (protein malnutrition) for 28 d, followed by the refeeding of a balanced diet for 14 d (15% casein) (refeeding). A control group was fed 15% casein for 42 d. In the control group, total lipolytic activity increased with age (r = 0.83, P < 0.001), whereas in both depleted groups, this activity remained low and stable throughout the period of protein malnutrition. At d 28 of protein malnutrition, plasma total lipolytic activities were significantly reduced in both depleted…

Lipidomic profiling identifies signatures of metabolic risk

2020

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), the clustering of metabolic risk factors, is associated with cardiovascular disease risk. We sought to determine if dysregulation of the lipidome may contribute to metabolic risk factors. Methods: We measured 154 circulating lipid species in 658 participants from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and tested for associations with obesity, dysglycemia, and dyslipidemia. Independent external validation was sought in three independent cohorts. Follow-up data from the FHS were used to test for lipid metabolites associated with longitudinal changes in metabolic risk factors. Results: Thirty-nine lipids were…

Lymphatic Delivery and In Vitro Pancreatic Lipase Hydrolysis of Glycerol Esters of Conjugated Linoleic Acids in Rats

2000

We examined the intestinal delivery of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) given in their triacylglycerol form in the mesenteric lymph of rats. Emulsions containing a mixture of the trilinolein/triester of CLA (9:1) and a tri-[1-(14)C]-linoleyl-sn-glycerol tracer were administered by force-feeding. Lymph was collected over two time periods (0-6 and 6-24 h), and the apparent recovery of CLA was determined relative to that of [1-(14)C]-18:2(n-6). A mixture of CLA-triester/trilinolein (1:9), trilinolein or CLA-triester was separately subjected to pancreatic lipase hydrolysis in vitro to determine whether the lymphatic recovery of CLA was correlated with the initial step of digestion. Lymphatic rec…

Differences in muscle and adipose tissue gene expression and cardio-metabolic risk factors in the members of physical activity discordant twin pairs

2010

High physical activity/aerobic fitness predicts low morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to identify the most up-regulated gene sets related to long-term physical activity vs. inactivity in skeletal muscle and adipose tissues and to obtain further information about their link with cardio-metabolic risk factors. We studied ten same-sex twin pairs (age range 50-74 years) who had been discordant for leisure-time physical activity for 30 years. The examinations included biopsies from m. vastus lateralis and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue. RNA was analyzed with the genome-wide Illumina Human WG-6 v3.0 Expression BeadChip. For pathway analysis we used Gene Set Enrichment Analysis utilizing…

Reduction in systemic and VLDL triacylglycerol concentration after a 3-month Mediterranean-style diet in high-cardiovascular-risk subjects.

2010

The first results of the PREDIMED (PREvencion con Dieta MEDiterranea) randomized trial, after 3-month intervention, showed that the Mediterranean Diet (MD), supplemented with either virgin olive oil (VOO) or nuts, reduced systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol and triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations and increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol when compared to a control (low-fat diet) group. Serum TG levels are an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease and are strongly determined by very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) composition, which can be specifically modified by dietary lipid source. Within the context of the PREDIMED study, we assessed the VLDL composition…

Synthesis of yttrium aluminum garnet nanoparticles in confined environment III: Cerium doping effect

2018

Abstract Cerium yttrium aluminum garnet (Ce:YAG, CexY3-xAl5O12) nanoparticles doped with different cerium amount were obtained by calcining the precursors synthesized via co-precipitation in w/o microemulsion for 1 h at 900 °C. The structural and morphological properties were investigated by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) in order to investigate the effect of doping level on formation and microstructure of obtained nanoparticles. It was found that the composition of the final products strongly depends on the concentration of cerium. The formation of single YAG phase …

A NANOPARTICULATE DRUG-DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR RIVASTIGMINE: PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND IN VITRO BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION

2007

The preparation and characterization of surface-PE Gylated polymeric nanoparticles are described. These systems were obtained by UV irradiation of PHM and PHM-PEG(2000) as an inverse microemulsion, using an aqueous solution of the PHM/PHM-PEG(2000) copolymer mixture as the internal phase and triacetin saturated with water as the external phase, and characterized by dimensional analysis, zeta-potential measurements and XPS. in vitro biological tests demonstrated their cell compatibility and their ability to escape from phagocytosis. Rivastigmine was encapsulated into the nanoparticle structure and drug-release profiles from loaded samples were investigated in PBS at pH = 7.4 and human plasma.

L'adriatico e la ricerca dell'identità nazionale in musica

2004

The author analyses Friedrich Meinecke's concepts of 'Staatsnation' and 'Kulturnation' in relation to tendencies of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Italian, Slavic and German music in the region of the North Adriatic under the Absburg administration from 1860 to 1918 (Trieste, Istria, Rijeka/Fiume, Dalmazia). With regard to nationalism, the biographies of Ivan von Zajc and Nikola Strmic, both supporters of Italian opera and later proponents of the national Croatian opera (Strmic only for a short period), are useful exemplars.Other composers, such as the Italian Antonio Smareglia and the Slovenian Marij Kogoj, kept faith with the cosmopolitan idea of the Austrian intellectuals (typical al…

Preparation of hepatitis C virus structural and non-structural protein fragments and studies of their immunogenicity

2006

Abstract Plasmids pQE-60 and pQE-30 containing 6× His-tag sequence were used for expression of fragments of HCV structural and non-structural proteins in Escherichia coli (E. coli). The following fragments were used: core (1–98 aa), NS3 (202–482 aa), and tetramer of hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) of E2 protein. The constructed plasmids directed high levels of expression of HCV proteins in E. coli JM109. After purification by the metal-affinity chromatography on nickel–nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni–NTA) agarose, the His-tagged HCV proteins were used for immunization of BALB/c mice. All three proteins were able to induce high levels of specific antibodies and, in the case of the NS3 and HVR1 tetra…
