The production and consumption of N2O in soils mainly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The factors that significantly influence agricultural N2O emissions mainly concern the agricultural practices (N application rate, crop type, fertilizer type) and soil conditions (soil moisture, soil organic C content, soil pH and texture). Abstract In this study a University of Cape Town (UCT) Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) Membrane BioReactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant was monitored in terms of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The short term effect on the N2O emission due to the influent carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio variation (C/N ratios of 2, 5 and 10 gCOD/gN) was evaluated. Competitive interaction of three peroxidizing herbicides with the binding of 3H acifluorfen to corn etioplast membranes

AbstractThe specific binding of the herbicide acifluorfen 5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid to corn etioplast membranes is competitively inhibited by protoporphyrinogen IX, the substrate of protoporphyrinogen oxidase. Three other peroxidizing molecules, oxadiazon [5-ter-butyl-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-one], LS 82556 [(S)3-N-(methylbenzyl)carbamoyl-5-propionyl-2,6-lutidine], and M&B 39279 [5-amino-4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)pyrazol], also compete with acifluorfen for its binding site. The four herbicides thus bind to the same site, or to closely located sites, on the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase.

Achieving complete nitrification below the washout SRT with hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) treating municipal wastewater

This study analyzed the performances of a hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) pilot plant in terms of nutrients removal of the attached growth and suspended biomass in comparison with a conventional activated sludge (CAS) system at different sludge retention time (SRT) (20−3) days. Overall, the MABR showed better performances than the CAS in terms of TSS (86% vs 79%), COD (89% vs 85%) and total nitrogen (80% vs 65%). The minimum SRT for achieving complete nitrification in the MABR was close to 3 days, corresponding to a SRT in the aerobic compartment of 1.9 days, whereas in the CAS it was equal to 8 days (aerobic SRT of 4.8 days). We studied potential links between environmental factors, nitrous oxide (N2O) accumulation, and genetic indicators of nitrite and N2O reducing bacteria in 12 boreal lakes. Denitrifying bacteria were investigated by quantifying genes encoding nitrite and N2O reductases (nirS/nirK and nosZ, respectively, including the two phylogenetically distinct clades nosZ(I) and nosZ(II)) in lake sediments. Summertime N2O accumulation and hypolimnetic nitrate concentrations were positively correlated both at the inter-lake scale and within a depth transect of an individual lake (Lake Vanajavesi). [EN] The direct asymmetric Henry reaction with prochiral ketones, leading to tertiary nitroaldols, is an elusive reaction so far limited to a reduced number of reactive substrates such as trifluoromethyl ketones or alpha-keto carbonyl compounds. Expanding the scope of this important reaction, the direct asymmetric addition of nitromethane to 2-acylpyridine N-oxides catalyzed by a BOX-Cu(II) complex to give the corresponding pyridine-derived tertiary nitroaldols having a quaternary stereogenic center with variable yields and good enantioselectivity, is described.
