Energy and environmental life-cycle impacts of solar-assisted systems: The application of the tool “ELISA”

2020

Abstract Solar heating and cooling (SHC) systems can be relevant in the achievement of energy and climate European goals. The benefits of these technologies should be evaluated taking into account their life-cycle energy and environmental impacts, calculated by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The development of a complete LCA can be difficult and time-consuming particularly for non-experts in LCA, discouraging them in developing the life-cycle assessments. To overcome this issue, the paper presents “ELISA - Environmental Lifecycle Impacts of Solar Air-conditioning systems”, a user-friendly simplified tool for estimating the life-cycle energy and environmental benefits/impacts of s…

Court Interpreting 2009: an undervalued and misunderstood profession? Or: will justice speak?

2010

The article addresses a number of topical issues relating to court interpreting. After examining a number of issues discussed among US interpreters in July 2009, it considers the provision of court interpreting in a number of different English-speaking jurisdictions, including the position of agencies. It presents the cost of a lack of judicial awareness of the issues involved in providing competent interpreting in legal proceedings, and looks at how rare languages are dealt with in the United States. It examines best practice and how this can quickly turn into worst practice. It considers the situation in Canada’s Province of Ontario, where a class action has been brought against the Minis…

Introducción

2015

(...) if censorship is in itself a serious issue in the same language and culture, it is even more serious if it operates via translation. That is to say, from one language (and culture) to another, given that, if departing from the sense, function and form of a source text if transferred from a language to another, if the translated text is partially or wholly translated (i.e. "no-translation") or even amended, the result is a text that will definitely not resemble the original. The consequences of this are great, not only affecting the writer in the source language, but also the image, or idea, of the whole source literary system.Sadly, one of the problems scholars face when researching c…

The Epilogue in Doctor Faustus: The Petrarchan Context

2010

Metaphors used in Epilogue in Doctor Faustus, particularly the cut branch and Apollo‟s burned laurel bough, are indicative of Marlowe‟s intellectual involvement with Petrarch and the former‟s role in the literary circle centered on the Countess of Pembroke. His Latin epistle to Mary Sidney in Thomas Watson‟s Amyntas (1592) repeats similar metaphors, and the combination in the Epilogue of these images with that of the “forward wits” point both to Petrarch‟s Sonnet 269 (“Rotta l‟alta colonna e ‟l verde lauro”) and Sonnet 307 (“I‟ pensava assai destro esser sul l‟ale”). In fact, lines in the Epilogue are strongly evocative of some verses in Sonnet 307, where Petrarch ponders the theme of overr…
