The Talk Test and nasal breathing when running below and above the first lactate turnpoint
2021
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) Objective: The use of lactate and heart rate as intensity control tools may be expensive for certain populations and may lead athletes to be excessively ‘numbers fixated’. The aim of this study was to investigate if the Talk Test and/or a mouth closed ‘nose breathing’ test could serve as an effective intensity control tool and differentiate between running below and above the first lactate turn point. Conclusion: At the group level, both MCT and TT responses demarcate statistically significant and practically meaningful differences in physiological intensity and perceived exertion. However, neither the MCT nor the TT consistently differentiate betwe…
Variation in exercise intensity during typical training drills in youth footballers measured via GPS tracking devices
2020
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) PURPOSE: The present study aims to investigate the between-athlete and within-athlete variation in intensity occurring during various small-sided games (SSG) formats to determine their relevance within soccer specific drills. METHODS:19 youth male football players (age:14.0 ±1.0 y, height: 1.6 ±7.4 m, body mass: 54.5 ±7.5 kg) were monitored during an 8-week period two times per week. The first two weeks consisted of a familiarization phase followed by 6 weeks of monitoring. Subjects performed a standardized warmup prior to completing various formats of SSG games (3 vs. 3 and 6 vs. 6). Each SSG were performed with a duration of 2 x 4 minutes interspe…
Effectiveness of traditional- vs individualized power training based on force-velocity profiling on maximal power, rate of force development, myoelec…
2020
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) INTRODUCTION. Muscle power is reported to be a good indicator of functional independency in elderly. Individualized power-training based on force-velocity (F-v) profiling has received increasing attention for optimizing muscle power development. The aim of this study is to investigate effectiveness of traditional- vs individualized power-training based on F-v profiling on maximal power(Pmax), rate of force development (RFD), myoelectric activity (EMG), and rate of myoelectric activity (RMA) in older men. METHOD. Forty-nine older men (67.7±5.3years) underwent physical testing before and after a 10-week training intervention. Subjects were randomized …
Tissue oxygen saturation during different blood flow restriction exercise protocols
2018
Master's thesis Sports Science ME517 - University of Agder 2018 Low load BFRRE induce more strength and hypertrophy than work-matched resistance exercise alone. Although the potential for hypertrophic adaptions seem to be comparable between high load conventional resistance exercise and low load BFRRE. Adaptions in hypertrophy following BFRRE seem to be greater with loads of 30% than 20%. There does not seem to be any relationship between the dose of low load BFRRE and the muscular adaption hypertrophy. There is lack of research of lower volumes, in terms of what is necessary for muscular adaptions. Hypertrophy is speculated to be more affected by frequency when exercising over shorter peri…
Betydningen av fysisk aktivitet for kognitiv funksjon og akademisk prestasjon : Et systematisk review
2018
Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Objectives: This review aims to give an overview of studies providing evidence for a relationship between physical activity and cognitive function or academic achievement in children of normal development ≤ 18 years of age. Theory: The relevant research are introduced. Methods: This study is a systematic review. SPORTDiscus, CINAHL Plus with full text, MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, Health and Psychosocial Instruments and ERIC were searched for relevant articles. A total of 23 articles were included. Methodological quality was assessed. Codes on dissimilar categories of intervention differences were developed. The notion …
Er det en sammenheng mellom en kraft-hastighetsprofil målt i lab og en kraft-hastighetsprofil målt med GPS på fotballbanen?
2021
Unsteady physiology and perception during long “steady state” runs. What role do training characteristics play?
2021
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) PURPOSE: To contribute to a better understanding of low-intensity (<LT1) endurance training by quantifying and explaining the physiological mechanisms associated with cardiac drift and fatigue during low-intensity running and relate them to training characteristics. […] RESULTS: There was a significant drift for heart rate, oxygen consumption, ventilation, RER and RPE during both runs (P<0.05). There was no difference in drift between groups for any measurements, except for running economy during LR100. The drift was similar during LR90 and LR100 for all measurements except RER, which was significantly greater during LR90 (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The p…
Nevromuskulær trening i jentefotballen
2021
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) Background: It ́s claimed that physical activity and motor competence are essential components of an active lifestyle and performance in multicomponent sports such as soccer. As a functional and holistic training method, neuromuscular training may promote health-and performance related components in kids’ sports. Aim: The aim was to investigate the effects of nine weeks neuromuscular training on gross-and sports specific motor competence, strength and change of direction in girls. […] Conclusion: The neuromuscular trainings program used in this study did not show an effect on gross-and sports specific motor competence, strength or change of directio…
New metrics for analysis and presentation of device-based indices of physical activity : Exploration of a novel way of reducing accelerometer data in…
2021
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) Background: Device-based measurements of human behavior are becoming the standard tool to collect precise, valid, and free-living indices of habitual physical activity. However, differences between brands and lack of consensus regarding data reduction strategies, hampers between and within study comparisons. New metrics such as the analytical (average acceleration and intensity gradient) and translational metrics (MX) proposed by Rowlands et al. (2019a) might overcome some of these limitations. Currently the new metrics have not been applied to large representative data sets and comparisons of measurement properties between traditional and new accel…
