On cosmic quantum tunneling from “nothing”

2015

We extend to a general Λ-Eriedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (ΛFLRW) a previous result by Vilenkin and others according to which a closed de Sitter universe could be created from "nothing". More specifically, our main result is that only the closed ΛFLRW universe (but not the open and flat ones) could be created from a corresponding instanton, that is, from the corresponding solution with signature +4 of the Einstein field equations. Before getting this result the suitable corresponding instantons are calculated. The result is in accordance with previous results by another authors obtained by different methods.

Behaviour of Interacting Protons: The Average-Mass Approach to its Study and its Possible Biological Relevance

1973

Among all other kinds of ions occurring in the solid, liquid and living states of matter, positive hydrogen ions (which we shall henceforth call protons for brevity) are singled out by their exceptionally small mass. This is the reason for their specific property of tunnelling through potential barriers, which in turn is responsible for such properties as hydrogen bonding. This is also responsible for the unique properties exhibited in many cases by (sub)systems of interacting protons. Examples are the intriguing properties of liquid water and ice [1]; the para-ferroelectric transition in hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics [2]; the cooperative transitions in ammonium salts [3] and in hexamine h…

Analysis of photon-scanning tunneling microscope images of inhomogeneous samples: determination of the local refractive index of channel waveguides

1995

Channel waveguides are imaged by a photon-scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). The polarization of the light and its orientation with respect to the guide axis are shown to be very important parameters in the analysis of the images of such samples. We simulated image formation for the plane of incidence parallel to the axis of the guide. Our theoretical results are qualitatively in agreement with our measurements. These results show the ability of the PSTM to give information about the local refractive-index variations of a sample.

Disorder and localization effects on the local spectroscopic and infrared optical properties ofGa1−xMnxAs

2015

We study numerically the influence of disorder and localization effects on the local spectroscopic characteristics and infrared optical properties of ${\text{Ga}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\text{Mn}}_{x}\text{As}$. We treat the band structure and disorder effects at an equal level by using an exact diagonalization supercell simulation method. This method accurately describes the low-doping limit and gives a clear picture of the transition to higher dopings, which captures the localization effects inaccessible to other theoretical methods commonly used. Our simulations capture the rich in-gap localized states observed in scanning tunneling microscopy studies and reproduce the observed features of t…

Solid State Analogue of a Double Slit Interferometer

2002

In a conventional optical double slit interferometer Fig. 1a light emerges from a source at a point O’, passes through two slits A and B and forms an interference pattern at a point O. If the source provides monochromatic radiation the coherence between optical paths O’AO and O’BO is preserved at all reasonable scales. The intensity of the interference pattern at a given point O can be altered by changing the distance ∣O’AO∣ - ∣O’BO∣.

Photodetachment o F- by a few-cycle circularly polarized laser field

2009

We report on calculations of the above threshold detachment of F(-) by a few-cycle circularly polarized laser field, discussing the effects of both the carrier-envelope relative phase and the number of the cycle contained in a pulse on the angular distribution of ejected photoelectron. The results are analyzed in terms of a two-step semiclassical model: after the electrons are detached through tunnelling their motion is determined by the electric field pulse according to the classical dynamics laws. Anisotropies in the angular distributions of the electrons ejected on the plane perpendicular to the laser propagation direction are found that depend on the number of cycle of the laser pulse.

Arrays of Josephson junctions in an environment with vanishing impedance

1999

The Hamiltonian operator for an unbiased array of Josephson junctions with gate voltages is constructed when only Cooper pair tunnelling and charging effects are taken into account. The supercurrent through the system and the pumped current induced by changing the gate voltages periodically are discussed with an emphasis on the inaccuracies in the Cooper pair pumping. Renormalisation of the Hamiltonian operator is used in order to reliably parametrise the effects due to inhomogeneity in the array and non-ideal gating sequences. The relatively simple model yields an explicit, testable prediction based on three experimentally motivated and determinable parameters.

RESONANT ACTIVATION AND NOISE ENHANCED STABILITY IN JOSEPHSON JUNCTIONS

2005

We investigate the interplay of two noise-induced effects on the temporal characteristics of short overdamped Josephson junctions in the presence of a periodic driving. We find that: (i) the mean life time of superconductive state has a minimum as a function of driving frequency, and near the minimum it actually does not depend on the noise intensity (resonant activation phenomenon); (ii) the noise enhanced stability phenomenon increases the switching time from superconductive to the resistive state. As a consequence there is a suitable frequency range of clock pulses, at which the noise has a minimal effect on pulse propagation in RSFQ electronic devices.

GENERATION OF ENTANGLED STATES OF TWO DISTANT CAVITY MODES VIA JOSEPHSON JUNCTION BASED DEVICES

2007

We present a simple scheme for the preparation of entangled states of the e.m. modes of two spatially separated microwave cavities exploiting their interaction with two superconducting SQUID rings embedded within them. The scheme requires that the two SQUID qubits are initially prepared in an entangled state and the possibility of controlling both the coupling strengths and the interaction times. We also briefly discuss the importance of such a theoretical scheme in view of possible applications in the context of quantum computing and its experimental feasibility.

Decoherence in circuits of small Josephson junctions

2001

We discuss dephasing by the dissipative electromagnetic environment and by measurement in circuits consisting of small Josephson junctions. We present quantitative estimates and determine in which case the circuit might qualify as a quantum bit. Specifically, we analyse a three junction Cooper pair pump and propose a measurement to determine the decoherence time $\tau_\phi$.
