Efficacy of TachoSil patches in controlling Dacron suture-hole bleeding after abdominal aortic aneurysm open repair
2009
Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is evaluate the efficacy of TachoSil® patches in controlling suture-hole bleeding after elective infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) replacement with Dacron graft. Materials and methods Patients undergoing elective replacement of infrarenal AAA with Dacron grafts were prospectively randomized to TachoSil® patches (Group I) or standard compression with surgical swabs (Group II). We evaluated time to haemostasis, blood loss during the operation, blood loss after cross-clamp removal, duration of operation, drain volume, requirement for blood transfusion and surgeons rating of efficacy. Results Twenty patients were randomized (10 patients in each tr…
The Use of a Surgical Patch in the Prevention of Lymphoceles After Extraperitoneal Pelvic Lymphadenectomy for Prostate Cancer: A Randomized Prospecti…
2009
Purpose: Pelvic lymphadenectomy is frequently performed simultaneously with radical prostatectomy to determine lymph node status and the most frequently recorded postoperative complication is the development of a symptomatic lymphocele. This study evaluated TachoSil® as an adjunct treatment in preventing lymphoceles after extraperitoneal pelvic lymphadenectomy for prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 consecutive patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy were prospectively enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly assigned to a standard technique with the use of clips and electrocoagulation plus TachoSil, or to standard technique on…
The effect of biological sealants and adhesive treatments on matrix metalloproteinase expression during renal injury healing
2017
Background Renal injuries are relatively common in cases of abdominal trauma. Adhesives and sealants can be used to repair and preserve damaged organs. Using a rat model, this study explores the activity of different matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) during the healing of renal injuries treated by two biological adhesives (TachoSil and GelitaSpon) and a new synthetic elastic cyanoacrylate (Adhflex). Methods Renal traumatic injuries were experimentally induced in 90 male Wistar rats by a Stiefel Biopsy Punch in the anterior aspect of the left kidney. Animals were divided into five groups: 1, sham non-injured (n = 3); 2, non-treated standard punch injury (n = 6); 3, punch injury treated with Ta…
Letter: Tissue-Glue-Coated Collagen Sponge (TachoSil) for Minor Cerebral Dural Venous Sinus Laceration: What is the Evidence?
2015
We read with great interest the article by Gazzeri et al1 focusing on tissue-glue–coated collagen sponge (TachoSil) application to repair minor cerebral dural sinus lacerations. In their series, 57 consecutive patients were prospectively enrolled, and tears of the cerebral venous sinus were treated by TachoSil application directly to the site of the bleeding. In all patients, venous bleeding was managed initially by standard techniques for hemostasis such as compression, application of oxidized cellulose, or gelatin sponge. TachoSil application was used when standard measures failed to be effective, were excessively time- consuming or inadequate, or were considered risky. No complications r…
The effect of adhesives on inflammatory immune-markers during renal injury healing
2017
Renal injury is common in abdominal trauma. Adhesives and sealants can be used to repair and preserve damaged organs. We describe the effect of three biomaterial treatments (TachoSil, GelitaSpon, and Adhflex) on injured renal tissue. Renal traumatic injuries were experimentally induced in male Wistar rats (n = 90) using a punch. Animals were divided into five groups: (1) sham noninjured (n = 3) and punch injury groups; (2) nontreated (n = 6); (3) TachoSil (n = 27); (4) GelitaSpon (n = 27); and (5) Adhflex (n = 27). Wound healing was evaluated 2, 6, and 18 days postinjury by inflammatory cytokines response, histopathological evolution of lesions, inflammatory reaction markers (CD68), and vas…
The reconstructive role of TachoSil in neurosurgery
2016
Abstract Hemorrhages, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula and infections are the most challenging post-operative complications in Neurosurgery [1–5]. Fibrin sealant agents have been developed with the aim to provide efficient hemostasis and safe dural closure [3,6–14]. In this study we report our initial experience using TachoSil® (haemostatic surgical patch; Nycomed, Linz, Austria) in achieving hemostasis and CSF leakage repair during cranio-cerebral procedures [15–18]. We describe and show the unique features of this fibrin sealant, pioneered with stunning success in many surgical procedures known to be at high risk of peri- and postoperative bleeding (i.e. nephrectomies, pulmonary lobectom…
