2017

Scanning probe microscopies applied to the study of the domain wall in a ferroelectric crystal.

2007

Summary Scanning near-field optical microscopy is capable of measuring the topography and optical signals at the same time. This fact makes this technique a valuable tool in the study of materials at nanometric scale and, in particular, of ferroelectric materials, as it permits the study of their domains structure without the need of chemical etching and, therefore, not damaging the surface (as will be demonstrated later). We have measured the scanning near-field optical microscopy transmission, as well as the topography, of an RbTiOPO4 single crystalline slab, which exhibits two different of macroscopic ferroelectric domains. A chemical selective etching has been performed to distinguish b…

Influence of a Specific Aquatic Program on Social and Gross Motor Skills in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Three Case Reports

2019

Swimming pool activities revealed to be efficacious to train psychomotor skills and increase adaptive behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a specific multi-systemic aquatic therapy (CI-MAT) on gross motor and social skills in three adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Methods: three adolescents with ASD of which two boys (M1 with a chronological age of 10.3 years and a mental age of 4.7 years; M2 with a chronological age of 14.6 and a mental age inferior to 4 years) and one girl (chronological age of 14.0 and a mental age inferior to 4 years). The study was divided into three phases: …

Fabrication and Modelling of Three-Dimensional Sub-kelvin Phononic Crystals

2012

We have investigated the fabrication and computational modelling of threedimensional phononic crystals for the observation of full band gaps for thermal phonons at sub-kelvin temperatures. Self-assembled arrays of monodisperse polystyrene nanospheres have been fabricated using a vertical deposition technique. Optimal conditions for increasing crystal domain size and crystalline quality have been studied. In addition, the phononic band structure has been computed using the finite element method for the simple cubic lattice. The dependence of band structure on contact area between spheres has also been studied. For small enough contact area a large band gap is observed, predicting a strong in…

Northeastern Neo-Aramaic and Language Contact

2020

The North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects form one of the surviving branches of the Aramaic language family. Extremely diverse, they are or were spoken by Christian and Jewish minorities originating in Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran. They have been in intense contact with other languages of the region, most notably Kurdish, but also Arabic, Turkic languages and Persian. As a result, they show a great deal of contact influence, not only in lexicon and phonology but also in morphology and syntax. The precise forms of the borrowings, as well as their behavior, usually reflect the local dialects of the donor language, showing how important fine-grained dialectal data is in a study of language contac…

Potential impact of a nonavalent anti HPV vaccine in Italian men with and without clinical manifestations

2021

AbstractHuman papilloma virus infection (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Little is known about male infection. Nonavalent vaccine against types 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58 was approved and neutral gender immunization programs have been proposed. This study evaluates the potential impact of nonavalent vaccine compared to quadrivalent in male living in Sicily (Italy). 58.7% of samples were HPV positive and forty-four types of HPV were identified. A significant higher estimated coverage of nonavalent vaccine than quadrivalent was observed (64.3% vs. 45.8%), with absolute and relative additional impact of 20.1% and 47.2%, respectively. Low impact of the vaccine were calculat…

Biopolymeric bilayer films produced by co-extrusion film blowing

2018

Abstract Biodegradable packaging promises a more environmentally friendly future. Nevertheless, a single biopolymer often lacks of some important properties. In order to contribute to this challenge, biodegradable bilayer films from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and MaterBi® were prepared in this work and compared with monolayer films obtained with both the polymers. The prepared films were fully characterized through morphological, mechanical, thermal, chemical, optical and water contact angle analyses. Furthermore, the hydrolytic degradation of monolayer and bilayer films was studied by performing tests at three different pH. The morphological analysis revealed that PLA/MaterBi bilayer films sh…

Mechanical Characterization of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale through Nanoindentation. A Study on Pile-up and Viscoelasticity

2007

The analysis of nanoindentation force curves collected on polymers through the common Oliver and Pharr procedure does not lead to a correct evaluation of Young’s modulus. In particular, the estimated elastic modulus is several times larger than the correct one, thus compromising the possibility of a nanomechanical characterization of polymers. Pile-up or viscoelasticity is usually blamed for this failure, and a deep analysis of their influences is attempted in this work. Piling-up can be minimized by indenting on a true nanometer scale, i.e., at penetration depth smaller than 200 nm. On the other side, it is common knowledge that fast indentations minimize the effect of viscoelasticity. How…

PROBLEMAS QUE CAUSAN INFERENCIAS MORFOSINTACTICAS ENTRE ITALIANO Y ESPANOL

2007

This paper’s purpose is to describe and analyze an error corpus due to interference between Italian and Spanish, produced by 20 Erasmus’s students in Palermo. Those students have studied Italian in their country, but they all have a basic language acquisition. Firstly, because of the affinity between the two languages, the acquisition of a basic competence could seem easily; subsequently it could be difficult to pass to an intermediate level, because of a phonetic, morphological and syntactical adaptation process. This paper aims to suggest an educational intervention trough the construction of an error’s file in which every student can put his own information. This method could be consider…
