Healthy Aging and Sentence Production: Disrupted Lexical Access in the Context of Intact Syntactic Planning.
2020
AbstractHealthy ageing does not affect all features of language processing equally. In this study, we investigated the effects of ageing on different processes involved in fluent sentence production, a complex task that requires the successful execution and coordination of multiple processes. In Experiment 1, we investigated age-related effects on the speed of syntax selection using a syntactic priming paradigm. Both young and older adults produced target sentences quicker following syntactically related primes compared to unrelated primes, indicating that syntactic facilitation effects are preserved with age. In Experiment 2, we investigated age-related effects in syntactic planning and le…
When does Wenzel's extension of Young's equation for the contact angle of droplets apply? A density functional study.
2020
he contact angle of a liquid droplet on a surface under partial wetting conditions differs for a nanoscopically rough or periodically corrugated surface from its value for a perfectly flat surface. Wenzel's relation attributes this difference simply to the geometric magnification of the surface area (by a factor $r_{\rm w}$), but the validity of this idea is controversial. We elucidate this problem by model calculations for a sinusoidal corrugation of the form $z_{\rm wall}(y) = \Delta\cos(2\pi y/\lambda)$ , for a potential of short range $\sigma_{\rm w}$ acting from the wall on the fluid particles. When the vapor phase is an ideal gas, the change of the wall-vapor surface tension can be co…
Mass generation in Yang-Mills theories *
2017
In this talk we review recent progress on our understanding of the nonperturbative phenomenon of mass generation in non-Abelian gauge theories, and the way it manifests itself at the level of the gluon propagator, thus establishing a close contact with a variety of results obtained in large-volume lattice simulations. The key observation is that, due to an exact cancellation operating at the level of the Schwinger-Dyson equations, the gluon propagator remains rigorously massless, provided that the fully-dressed vertices of the theory do not contain massless poles. The inclusion of such poles activates the well-known Schwinger mechanism, which permits the evasion of the aforementioned cancel…

Nonlinear rocking of rigid blocks on flexible foundation: Analysis and experiments
2017
Abstract Primarily, two models are commonly used to describe rocking of rigid bodies; the Housner model, and the Winkler foundation model. The first deals with the motion of a rigid block rocking about its base corners on a rigid foundation. The second deals with the motion of a rigid block rocking and bouncing on a flexible foundation of distributed linear springs and dashpots (Winkler foundation). These models are two-dimensional and can capture some of the features of the physics of the problem. Clearly, there are additional aspects of the problem which may be captured by an enhanced nonlinear model for the base-foundation interaction. In this regard, what it is adopted in this paper is …
On the Rigorous Calculation of All Ohmic Losses in Rectangular Waveguide Multi-Port Junctions
2005
In this paper, all ohmic losses effects present in rectangular waveguide multi-port junctions are rigorous and efficiently computed. For this purpose, a new formulation based on the theory of cavities, which provides generalized admittance matrix representations for such junctions, is proposed. To validate this theory, we have successfully compared our results with numerical data of a lossy E-plane T-junction and of a hollow waveguide, as well as with experimental measurements of a real H-plane T-junction.
Monte Carlo Test of the Classical Theory for Heterogeneous Nucleation Barriers
2010
Flat walls facilitate the condensation of a supersaturated vapor: Classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation predicts that the free energy barrier $\Delta F_{\rm het}^*$ which needs to be overcome for the formation of sphere-cap shaped nucleation seeds is smaller than the barrier $\Delta F^*_{\rm hom}$ for spherical droplets in the bulk by a factor $0<f(\theta)<1$, which only depends on the contact angle $\theta$. In this letter we compute both $\Delta F^*_{\rm hom}$ and $\Delta F^*_{\rm het}$ from Monte Carlo simulations and test the theory for the lattice gas model (for which $\theta$ can be readily controlled). Even though the theory is only based on macroscopic arguments, it is shown …
Coulomb blockade in one-dimensional arrays of high-conductance tunnel junctions
2000
Properties of one-dimensional (1D) arrays of low Ohmic tunnel junctions (i.e. junctions with resistances comparable to, or less than, the quantum resistance $R_{\rm q}\equiv h/e^2\approx 25.8$ k$\Omega$) have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Our experimental data demonstrate that -- in agreement with previous results on single- and double-junction systems -- Coulomb blockade effects survive even in the strong tunneling regime and are still clearly visible for junction resistances as low as 1 k$\Omega$. We have developed a quasiclassical theory of electron transport in junction arrays in the strong tunneling regime. Good agreement between the predictions of this theory and the …
Ballistic transport through quantum point contacts of multi-orbital oxides
2020
Linear and non-linear transport properties through an atomic-size point contact based on oxides two-dimensional electron gas is examined using the tight-binding method and the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ approach. The ballistic transport is analyzed in contacts realized at the (001) interface between band insulators $LaAlO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ by using the Landauer-B\"uttiker method for many sub-bands derived from three Ti 3d orbitals ($d_{yz}$, $d_{zx}$ and $d_{xy}$) in the presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field. We focus especially on the role played by the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the inversion symmetry breaking term pointing out three transport regimes: the first, at low energies, involvi…
