In vitro antibacterial activity of endodontic sealers

Summary Objectives To evaluate the antibacterial activity of four endodontic sealers: one epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus), two zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)-based sealers (Endomethasone, Pulp Canal Sealer), and one sealer containing both ZOE and orthophenilphenol (Vcanalare). Methods A direct contact test (DCT) was performed. A 10 μl suspension of Enterococcus faecalis was placed on the test material 20 min, 24 h and 7 days after mixing. Bacteria were allowed to directly contact the sealers for 1 h at 37 °C. Bacterial growth was then spectrophotometrically measured every 30 min for 7 h, and again after 24 h as well. In vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of cured dentin/enamel adhesive incorporating the antimicrobial agent MDPB

The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro the antibacterial effect of a dentin/enamel adhesive containing MDPB (Clearfil Protect Bond) after curing and to compare it with an adhesive not containing MDPB (Clearfil SE Bond). The antibacterial effect of the cured adhesives was tested on Enterococcus faecalis by the evaluation of growth inhibition in a 48-h microplate direct contact test (DCT). The presence of antibacterial activity due to soluble components was also investigated by an agar diffusion test (ADT) performed with the adhesives cured on the surface of dentin disks. The autors describe a particular case of suicide of a 17-year-old-boy, who was found dead on the floor of his bedroom with a large shogun contact wound on his head.

Fabrication of Electrical Contacts on Pyramid-Shaped NTD-Ge Microcalorimeters Using Free-Standing Shadow Masks

In our effort to fabricate arrays of germanium microcalorimeters for X-ray detection, a truncated square-based pyramid shape has been identified as a suitable geometry for the sensors. It allows to obtain a uniform current spreading across each sensor, and represents a good compromise between having a large support area for the radiation absorber and for maintaining an overall small bolometer volume. Pd/Au/SiC nanostructured Schottky diodes were fabricated embedding Au nanoparticles (NPs) at the metalsemiconductor interface of macroscopic Pd/SiC contacts. The Au NPs mean size was varied controlling the temperature and time of opportune annealing processes. The electrical characteristics of the nanostructured diodes were studied as a function of the NPs mean size. In particular, using the standard theory of thermoionic emission, we obtained the effective Schottky barrier height (SBH) and the effective ideality factor observing their dependence on the annealing time and temperature being the signature of their dependence on the mean NP size. We investigate the effects of localized controlled nanometric inhomogeneities, represented by Au nanoparticles, on the electrical properties of Pd/SiC Schottky diodes. In particular, we investigate the effects of the nanoparticle radius R on the current-voltage characteristics. The main result concerns the strong dependence of the effective Schottky barrier height of the Pd/SiC contact on R, giving a practical technique to tailor, in a wide range, such a barrier height by simply changing the process parameters during the diode preparation.
