Electrochemistry of hydrotalcite-supported bis(2-mercapto-2,2-diphenyl-ethanoate) dioxomolybdate complexes.
1998
The redox properties of the hydrotalcite-intercalated bis(2-mercapto-2,2-diphenyl-ethanoate) dioxomolybdate(VI) complex are investigated by cyclic voltammetry by using modified carbon paste electrodes and clay-modified electrodes. The electrochemical data provide evidence that boundary-associated species involving the VI, V and IV oxidation states of molybdenum are responsible for the electroactivity.
Electrochemical Monitoring of Compartmentalization Effects in the Stability of Meisenheimer Anions Supported in Hydrotalcite and X and Y Zeolites
2005
Meisenheimer anions (MS - ) derived from 2,4-dinitroaniline are stabilized into Li + - and Na + -exchanged zeolites X and Y forming alkali ion-MS ion pairs. Upon attachment of the zeolites to polymer film electrodes immersedinto Et 4 N + /MeCN and Li + /MeCN electrolytes, boundary-associated MS - ions display two oxidation processes at +0.40 and +0.65 V vs. AgCl/Ag. This response sharply contrasts with that recorded for MS - in solution and incorporated within hydrotalcite, for which a unique oxidation peak at +0.35 V is recorded. The electrochemistry of zeolite-associated MS - can be described in terms of an unusual electron-transfer/ chemical reaction/electron-transfer/comproportionation …
Inhaled Surfactant in the treatment of accidental Talc Powder inhalation: a new case report
2011
Abstract The use of talcum powder is incorrectly part of the traditional care of infants. Its acute aspiration is a very dangerous condition in childhood. Although the use of baby powder has been discouraged from many authors and the reports of its accidental inhalation have been ever more rare, sometimes new cases with several fatalities have been reported. We report on a patient in which accidental inhalation of baby powder induced severe respiratory difficulties. We also point out the benefits of surfactant administration. Surfactant contributed to the rapid improvement of the medical and radiological condition, preventing severe early and late complications and avoiding invasive approac…
Stimuli-responsive hybrid materials: breathing in magnetic layered double hydroxides induced by a thermoresponsive molecule
2014
[EN] A hybrid magnetic multilayer material of micrometric size, with highly crystalline hexagonal crystals consisting of CoAl-LDH ferromagnetic layers intercalated with thermoresponsive 4-(4-anilinophenylazo)benzenesulfonate (AO5) molecules diluted (ratio 9 : 1) with a flexible sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) surfactant has been obtained. The resulting material exhibits thermochromism attributable to the isomerization between the azo (prevalent at room temperature) and the hydrazone (favoured at higher temperatures) tautomers, leading to a thermomechanical response. In fact, these crystals exhibited thermally induced motion triggering remarkable changes in the crystal morphology and volume. In…
Matrix metalloproteinases production in malignant pleural effusions after talc pleurodesis
2003
SUMMARY In this study we have evaluated the modifications of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in malignant pleural fluids taken from patients suffering from lung cancer and treated with intrapleural talc instillation to induce pleurodesis. Furthermore, we have analysed the variations of some inflammatory mediators (C-reactive protein, α-1 antitrypsin) and of a protein (plasminogen) involved in MMP activation. In all patients the clinical improvement after talc pleurodesis was followed by a reduction in MMP-1, TIMP-1, C-reactive protein, α-1 antitrypsin and plasminogen activity. Furthermore, MMP-9 levels were variable; in fact, in some patients they were high at the beginning of treatment, i…
Video-thoracoscopic surgical pleurodesis in the management of malignant pleural effusion: the importance of an early intervention.
2005
Thoracentesis plays an important role in cancer patients with symptomatic effusions, although its effect is short-lived and symptoms recur in almost all patients. Early video-thoracoscopic surgical pleurodesis may provide added benefit to a group of patients with advanced cancer presenting with symptomatic malignant pleural effusion. Seventy-six patients with advanced cancer and pleural effusion due to pulmonary-pleural metastases were recruited. In 51 cases (67.1%), at least one thoracentesis was performed before admission for surgery. Preoperative staging consisted of chest radiograph, CT scan, and blood gas analysis. The mean Karnofsky performance status was about 50. Pleurodesis with ta…
Impact of the inclusion of hydrotalcite on the morphological and electrical characteristics of an epoxy-based CNT nanocomposite
2012
The experimental results concerning the correlation between morphological and electrical characteristics of a MWCNT/epoxy based composites are presented. The impact of a nanoclay filler is investigated on the DC conductivity of a matrix loaded with different concentrations of MWCNT in order to evaluate the improvements on the dispersion of CNT inside the epoxy matrix. The dispersion is deemed to be very influencing on the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite. A detailed morphological and structural characterization allows to interpret the electrical behaviour of the nanocomposites. © 2012 IEEE.
Structure-properties relationships in melt reprocessed PLA/hydrotalcites nanocomposites
2017
In this work the effect of multiple reprocessing was studied on molecular structure, morphology and properties of poly(lactic acid)/hydrotalcites (PLA/HT) nanocomposites compared to neat PLA. In addition, the influence of two different kinds of HT – organically modified (OM-HT) and unmodified (U-HT) – was evaluated. Thermo-mechanical degradation was induced by means of five subsequent extrusion cycles. The performance of the recycled materials was investigated by mechanical and rheological tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), intrinsic viscosity measurements and SEM observation. The results indicated that the best morphology was achieved in the systems incorporating OM-HT. On inc…

How we treat metastatic colorectal cancer.
2020
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. About 20% of patients suffer from metastatic disease at diagnosis, while about one-third of patients treated with curative intent relapsed. In these patients, an accurate staging allows to plan a treatment strategy within a multidisciplinary team in order to achieve predefined goals. Patient's clinical features, tumour characteristics and molecular profile (RAS/BRAF and microsatellite instability (MSI) status) should be considered during the treatment choice. Combination of chemotherapy (fluoropyrimidines, oxaliplatin and irinotecan) plus biological agents (antiepidermal growth factor receptor or antiangiogenic…
