Assessing reading and online research comprehension: Do difficulties in attention and executive function matter?
2021
This study evaluated the relation between sixth graders' (N = 426) teacher-rated difficulties in attention and executive function (EF) and their comprehension skills. Reading comprehension was assessed with a multiple-choice task and online research and comprehension (ORC) with a problem-solving task. The analyses were controlled for gender, reading fluency and nonverbal reasoning. To investigate differences in students' performance between the tasks, comprehension skills in the multiple-choice task were also controlled for in the ORC task. Structural equation models showed that teacher-rated attention and EF difficulties were related to students' performance more in the problem-solving tas…
Maternal homework assistance and children's task-persistent behavior in elementary school
2018
The present study used a sample of 365 children to investigate the longitudinal associations between maternal homework assistance (i.e., help, monitoring, and autonomy granting) and children's task-persistent behavior in learning situations from grade 2 to grade 4 of elementary school. Also, the extent to which task-persistent behavior plays a role in the links between parental homework assistance and children's academic performance was examined. The results showed that the more autonomy granting mothers reported, the more task-persistent behavior children exhibited; and more task-persistent behavior children exhibited, the more autonomy their mothers granted. In contrast, the more mothers …
Multitasking oppimistilanteessa : empiirinen tutkimus digitaalisten laitteiden käytön vaikutuksista opiskeluun yliopistoluennoilla
2017
Tutkielmassa otetaan selvää digitaalisten laitteiden (puhelin, tietokone, tabletti) käytön ja samanaikaisesta opetuksen seuraamisesta johtuvan multitaskingin vaikutuksista opiskeluun yliopistoluennoilla. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää opiskelijoille suunnatun kyselytutkimuksen ja luentotilanteessa järjestetyn kokeen avulla, mihin tarkoitukseen digitaalisia laitteita luennoilla käytetään, onko laitteiden käytöstä luennoilla hyötyä tai haittaa oppimiseen – vaikuttaako laitteiden käyttö keskittymiseen ja oppimistilanteesta muodostuvaan muistijälkeen. Tutkimuksen kohteena olivat Jyväskylän yliopiston opiskelijat keväällä 2017. Tutkimusmateriaali kerättiin kyselyllä (N = 347), jossa karto…
Critical Exploration of Flexible Delivery
2020
This work-in-progress research article presents an introductory qualitative study on students' perceptions of a flexibly delivered, modular computer science course. Many contemporary approaches to education rely in various ways on flexible delivery of course content. This is often done to capitalize on modern technology and the web, and to put the student ‘in the center.' However, it is becoming manifest that these approaches may challenge both the students and the equity between them, making it important to understand the effects of flexible delivery in terms of the students. In the voice of our students, flexible delivery was seen as a largely positive approach, reducing stress, promoting…
Teaching specialised vocabulary in a communicative way
2017
The nature of the syllabic neighbourhood effect in French
2006
International audience; We investigated whether and how sublexical units such as phonological syllables mediate access to the lexicon in French visual word recognition. To do so, two lexical decision task (LDT) experiments examined the nature of the syllabic neighbourhood effect. In Experiments 1a and b, the number of higher frequency syllabic neighbours was manipulated while controlling for the first bigram. The results failed to show a pure syllabic neighbourhood effect. In Experiments 2a and b, syllabic neighbourhood and bigram frequency were factorially manipulated. The interaction showed that the syllabic neighbourhood effect was inhibitory when bigram frequency was high, whereas it wa…
Vecāku iesaiste jaunu skolēnu/audzēkņu valodas apguvē
2017

How do self-regulation and effort in test-taking contribute to undergraduate students’ critical thinking performance?
2023
Critical thinking is a multifaceted construct involving a set of skills and affective dispositions together with self-regulation. The aim of this study was to explore how self-regulation and effort in test-taking contribute to undergraduate students’ performance in critical thinking assessment. The data were collected in 18 higher education institutions in Finland. A total of 2402 undergraduate students at the initial and final stages of their bachelor degree programmes participated in the study. An open-ended performance task, namely the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) International, was assigned to assess students’ critical thinking, and a self-report questionnaire was used to measu…
