Uptake and release kinetics of134Cs by Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and137Cs by Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) in controlled aquatic environment

The uptake and release kinetics of134Cs by Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and137Cs by Zebra Fish (Brachydanio rerio) from aquatic media of different ionic compositions and temperature was studied in controlled laboratory conditions. The accumulation of radiocesium in the case ofBrachydanio rerio is observed to be strongly dependent on the potassium ion concentration of the aquatic medium, but in the case ofCarassius auratus this dependence is quite weak. The biological half-lives of the cesium isotopes incorporated into the fish investigated in the present work vary from 19 to 80 days and are influenced by the temperature and the ionic composition of the aquatic medium.
Direct determination of minerals in human diets by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence

The use of near and mid infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to determine the concentration of mineral elements in Spanish human diets was investigated. Thirty-five commercial baby foods, 6 children fast food menus and 13 university canteen menu samples were analysed by infrared and XRF spectroscopy and spectra evaluated by using reference data obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A series of 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-5-methyl-1,3-diaza-4,6-diborabenzenes with methyl, phenyl, and dimethylamino substituents on the ring boron atoms were prepared using the cyclocondensation reaction between N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)trimethylsilylformamidine and the appropriately substituted 1,1-bis(organochloroboryl)ethane, followed by deprotonation of the cationic ring intermediate. Summary The physicochemical properties of potassium-, bismuth-, phosphorous- and molybdenum-doped (Me/V atomic ratios of 0 to 1) V 2 O 5 /γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts and their catalytic behavior in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have been compared. The incorporation of metal oxides modifies the catalytic behavior of alumina-supported vanadia catalysts by changing both their redox and their acid-base properties. In this way, the addition of potassium leads to the best increase in the selectivity to propylene. [reaction: see text] Potassium peroxomonosulfate deposited onto silica SiO2 x KHSO5 efficiently reacts with ketones in dichloromethane at room temperature to give the corresponding esters or lactones in quantitative yields. This method avoids hydrolysis of the reaction products. The Baeyer-Villiger reaction is catalyzed by potassium hydrogensulfate present in the supported reagent.
Kinetic modeling of ion conduction in KcsA potassium channel.

KcsA constitutes a potassium channel of known structure that shows both high conduction rates and selectivity among monovalent cations. A kinetic model for ion conduction through this channel that assumes rapid ion transport within the filter has recently been presented by Nelson. In a recent, brief communication, we used the model to provide preliminary explanations to the experimental current-voltage J-V and conductance-concentration g-S curves obtained for a series of monovalent ions (K(+),Tl(+), and Rb(+)). Organotin(IV) derivatives of N-[(2Z)-3-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-butenylidene]glycine have been synthesized and characterized by 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR, 119Sn Mossbauer, and IR spectroscopy along with elemental analyses. The di- and triorganotin(IV) complexes were readily obtained from the reactions of organotin halides and sodium/potassium N-[(2Z)-3-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-butenylidene]glycinate. Light adaptation of rod photoreceptors induces translocation of arrestin from inner segments (IS) to outer segments (OS). Our study suggests that components of the G-protein linked phosphoinositide pathway play a role in signaling the initiating events of arrestin translocation. We show that arrestin translocation can be stimulated by activators of phospholipase C (PLC) and protein kinase C (PKC) in the absence of light. A continuous stream of activating and repressing signals is processed by the transcription complex paused at the promoter of the c-myc proto-oncogene. The general transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is held at promoters prior to promoter escape and so is well situated to channel the input of activators and repressors to modulate c-myc expression.
