From abugida to alphabet in Konso, Ethiopia
2019
Abstract This study examines the interplay between phonological awareness and orthography in Konso, a Cushitic language in Southwest Ethiopia. Thirty-two adults reading the Konso abugida but with minimal exposure to alphabetic literacy completed an orally administered phoneme deletion task. The responses were then examined using the minimal edit distance hypothesis (Wali, Sproat, Padakannaya & Bhuvaneshwari, 2009) as a framework for the analysis. The results suggest that the difficulty of a deletion was related to the way the phoneme was represented in the Konso abugida. Content-based error analysis of the incorrect responses gave indications of how Konso abugida readers’ processing of …
Finanšu terminoloģijas mācīšana pieaugušajiem
2016
Finnish adult students’ perspectives on short-cycle study programmes : motives and evaluations
2018
We investigated how students in Finland perceive short-cycle higher education programmes. In line with the European trend, Finland has piloted short-cycle study programmes in order to attract adult students into higher education. We found that the students were mainly satisfied with their studies, and that their orientations to studies and learning were extrinsic in nature. The strengths of the programme were perceived as related to the flexibility of the studies, the variety of teaching methods, and the extensive contents of the studies. The main challenges were associated with difficulties in using information and communications technology (ICT) within the studies, and issues with time ma…
“Can do!” Teacher Promotion of Optimism in Response to Student Failure Expectation Expressions in Classroom Discourse
2019
This study offers detailed observational analyses of how teachers use optimism as an instructional resource when responding to students’ failure expectation displays in classroom situations. The results were based on video-recordings of 25 lessons in two Finnish part-time special education settings, analysed by means of applied conversation analysis. The results showed that the teachers boosted optimism by inverting students’ negative utterances, giving examples of successful experiences of peers, offering praise for students’ earlier performance or focusing on problems through instructional support. The study underlines the importance of addressing and elaborating students’ negative learni…

Opettajat haastateltiin pareina teemahaastattelun periaatteita noudattaen. Tutkimus analysoitiin sisällöanalyysin keinoin huomioiden myös tutkimuksen visuaalinen tutkimusmateriaali. Tulokset kertovat, kuinka opettajilla on käytössään monipuolinen joukko opetusmetodeja, …

Visualising knowledge from chat debates in argument diagrams
2010
This study investigates whether combining chat discussion and construction of an argument diagram stimulates students to formulate new ideas in practising argumentation. In this study, 16 secondary school students discussed vivisection and gender equality in pairs using both free and structured chat tools. In structured chat, the students selected and completed partial sentences provided by the computer. After the discussion, they jointly constructed either argument diagrams freely based on the previous discussions with an Internet tool or modified a diagram the computer had constructed automatically during the structured chat. The freely constructed diagrams contained more of the students'…
School PE through Internet discussion forums
2013
Background: Physical education is a subject that generates strong feelings and emotions, as can be seen in written accounts of PE experiences. It is also important to listen to students' voices in the research context. Nowadays, students can be listened to in a new way – through the Internet. Various discussion forums on the Internet make it possible for people to express themselves through real or imagined messages. It might be easier to express highly sensitive and even intimate thoughts on the Internet. Thus, the Internet might be an interesting open forum for teachers to think about new ways of developing teaching practices that would reduce negative experiences of PE.Purpose: The purpo…

Fear and Body. Art and Media Projects for Teacher Training.
2018
Media and contemporary art is important for teacher training. Art educators could link art experience with their own reality, and media evidences. Creativity deals with social, political and cultural issues. From an innovative perspective, we propose strategies for art educators. We introduce topics in the school setting, linked to the emotions, needs and students' life. Concepts such as 'fear' or 'body' allow us to investigate current problems. We approach the concepts from the work of Spanish artists Carmen Calvo and Anna Ruiz Sospedra. Methodology used mixed, combining Arts-Based Educational Research and Artography. We highlight the great acceptance by students of this process
