Label-free wavelength and phase detection based SMS fiber immunosensors optimized with cladding etching
2018
The performance of E-SMS (Etched Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode) optical fiber structures as immunosensors has been assessed by the implementation of antibody/antigen immunoassays. Through this procedure it has been proven that E-SMS structures are effective and suitable optical platforms for label-free biosensing. Using the phase shift and tracking the wavelength response it was found that the fabricated E-SMS devices exhibited limits of detection (LOD) down up to concentrations of 0.2mg/L of antigens in solution. This was achieved by coating the E-SMS with an antibody-based biolayer (goat IgG) that is able to determine the presence of anti-goat IgG antigen. Both a wavelength detection an…
A New Solution for Low-Voltage Distributed Generation Interface Protection System
2015
In this paper, a new solution is proposed for the remote monitoring and control of distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) connected to low-voltage distribution networks. The proposed system fulfills the in-force standard requirements for the connection of DGs to the utility grid. Moreover, it allows implementing some enhanced functions for the remote control of inverters of DGs and ESSs, not only in terms of disconnection but also in terms of voltage regulation and power shuttering. The proposed solution is based on a new interface protection system and a dedicated secondary substation concentrator, which allows the communication between the distributed system operat…
A unified radio control architecture for prototyping adaptive wireless protocols
2016
Experimental optimization of wireless protocols and validation of novel solutions is often problematic, due to limited configuration space present in commercial wireless interfaces as well as complexity of monolithic driver implementation on SDR-based experimentation platforms. To overcome these limitations a novel software architecture is proposed, called WiSHFUL, devised to allow: i) maximal exploitation of radio functionalities available in current radio chips, and ii) clean separation between the logic for optimizing the radio protocols (i.e. radio control) and the definition of these protocols.
Facilitating Elements for the Transmission of the Entrepreneurial Spirit in the Classroom
2014
There have been countless tests made to confirm that creativity is a critical skill for entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial training (Schmidt, J. et al. 2012), even more, practices on divergent thinking increases the entrepreneurial skills of students to generate a greater number and range of ideas, but not, their approaches to solve problems in a creative way. This situation raises a number of questions that should be analyzed before adding creativity and techniques to improve the training of creative thinking to studies (classes), about and in entrepreneurship, as a training channel, improvement or even to the generation of entrepreneurs. Our goal is to show that entrepreneurship is a…
An optimal dimensioning method of a green wall structure for noise pollution reduction
2021
International audience; This paper concern the optimization of a multilayered green wall structure including substrate and foliage in order to reduce as much as possible backward noise reflection and forward transmission from the wall. Each component involved in the wall structure is fully characterized experimentally to get its transfer matrix. Simulation demonstrated that foliage layer superimposed to substrate layer doesn’t affect the transmission losses but contributes greatly to the increase of return losses of the green wall structure. To achieve the best performances in terms of return and forward losses as well as frequency bandwidth, the methods of optimization are discussed inclu…
Pacemaker therapy in premature children with high degree AV block.
1998
The smallest pacemaker pulse generator and a steroid-eluting bipolar epicardial lead were implanted in two premature children with symptomatic AV block. Stable capture threshold and high amplitude evoked response electrogram resulted in normal function of the pacemaker Autocapture algorithm, which adjusts output 0.3 V above the measured capture threshold. Autocapture had previously been used only with endocardial leads. Longer-term observation is required.
Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission with Modal Channel Estimation
2009
A novel multi-carrier orthogonal transmission scheme is presented. While being simpler to implement, it has a spectral efficiency and design parameters similar to those of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing based on Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OFDM/OQAM). A parametric channel estimation technique is subsequently reported. The proposed technique is based on an algorithm obtained from classic Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) by relaxation of the hypothesis on the number of measurements with respect to the number of sensors. Numerical simulations show that our proposal outperforms previous works in this field.
Estimation of the Velocity of a Walking Person in Non-Stationary Indoor Environments from the Received RF Signal
2018
Accurate estimation of the time-variant (TV) velocity, i.e., TV speed and TV direction of motion, of walking persons in indoor environment is of great importance in a variety of wireless indoor applications. This paper presents a novel method for estimating the velocity of a walking person in three-dimensional indoor environments, which are assumed to be equipped with a distributed 3 × 3 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The approach estimates the TV speed, TV vertical angle-of-motion (VAOM), and TV horizontal angle-of-motion (HAOM) by fitting the spectrogram of the complex channel gain of a non-stationary indoor channel model to the spectrogram obtained from the received radio …
Dynamic QoS management for multimedia real-time transmission in industrial environments
2007
The use of multimedia within industrial applications has become commonplace, targetting improved process monitoring and machine vision. In both cases, the multimedia information is commonly distributed and subject to time constraints that must be met across networks while avoiding untolerable interference over typical control flows. This can be achieved with Constant Bit-Rate (CBR) channels, typically supported by real-time protocols. However, the compressors used to reduce the amount of information to transfer generate Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) patterns. Adapting a VBR source to a CBR channel requires specific care in order to avoid wasting channel bandwidth or dropping video frames. This pa…
SmartARP: merging IP and MAC addressing for low-cost gigabit Ethernet networks
1999
Abstract Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is one of the key TCP/IP stack protocols, used on LANs to map 32 bit IP addresses into 48 bit hardware addresses. Regular ARP uses MAC layer broadcasts to perform the mapping. In this paper a new server-based ARP extension (smartARP) is proposed, which allows the extension of ARP functionality beyond a single MAC layer broadcast domain. Compared to regular IP router, smartARP together with simple broadcast-filtering switches presents a low-cost alternative for forwarding packets between MAC layer broadcast domains. SmartARP is transparent to existing IP hosts, operates independent of LAN speed, and scales for big networks.
