Numerical study of the accuracy of temperature measurement by thermocouples in small-scale reactors

2018

Proper temperature measurement is imperative in any laboratory study if reliable data are to be obtained, particularly in the field of chemical kinetics. In this paper we analyze in silico some typical thermowell configurations used in small-scale reactors by coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with conjugated heat transfer phenomena. This allows us to identify deviations in measurements arising from thermal radiation and self-conductivity in mid and high temperature ranges, in addition to radial temperature gradients. A novel design is proposed and optimized by additional simulation, showing potential for faster and more accurate temperature measurements.

Correction for aerosol effects on satellite sea surface temperature measurements

1998

Estimation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from split- window algorithms for NOAA-AVHRR data can be determined with rms values of 0.7 K on a global basis. However, this figure is not compatible with the stringent accuracy of 0.3 K required by climate studies. Among the different sources of errors, the presence of tropospheric aerosols in the satellite field of view prevents the retrieval of accurate satellite SSTs. Still, the effect of aerosols on temperature measurements derived from remote sensing techniques has been traditionally overlooked. Very few studies have addressed the problem of giving split-window algorithms which incorporate aerosol correction, although retrieving algorithms …

The FLuorescence EXplorer Mission Concept-ESA's Earth Explorer 8

2017

In November 2015, the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) was selected as the eighth Earth Explorer mission of the European Space Agency. The tandem mission concept will provide measurements at a spectral and spatial resolution enabling the retrieval and interpretation of the full chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum emitted by the terrestrial vegetation. This paper provides a mission concept overview of the scientific goals, the key objectives related to fluorescence, and the requirements guaranteeing the fitness for purpose of the resulting scientific data set. We present the mission design at the time of selection, i.e., at the end of project phase Phase A/B1, as developed by two independent indus…

Spectroscopic response and charge transport properties of CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

2015

In this work, we present the results of spectroscopic investigations on CdZnTe (CZT) detectors grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (1MEM-CNR, Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), are characterized by the same electrode layout (gold electroless contacts): the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard-ring electrode, while the cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). The results of electrical investigations point out the low leakage currents of these detectors even at high bias voltages: 38 nA/cm(2) (T = 25 degrees C) at 10000 V/cm. The time stability and the spectros…

H-2 vibrational spectral signatures in binary and ternary mixtures: theoretical model, simulation and application to CARS thermometry in high pressur…

2001

International audience; A summary of the main results obtained by the two groups in the field of H-2 vibrational spectral line signatures for various mixtures. in connection with CARS diagnostics of H-2-O-2 combustion systems, is presented. H-2-X Systems may have specific large inhomogeneous spectral features, due to the dependence of the line broadening and line shifting on the (H-2) radiator speed, particularly at high temperature. Thus, careful attention has to be paid to rigorously analyze such features, both from the experimental point of view (Dijon) and from the theoretical one (Besancon). Applications of the present results to high-pressure H-2/air flame thermometry are also briefly…

Irradiation temperature influence on the in-situ measured radiation induced attenuation of Ge-doped fibers

2016

International audience; We report an experimental investigation on the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) in the ultraviolet-visible domain for Ge-doped optical fibers, during X-rays (10 keV) exposure at different temperatures. The objective is to characterize the impact of the irradiation temperature on the RIA levels and kinetics. Our data highlight that for dose exceeding 1 kGy(SiO2) the RIA spectrum changes with the irradiation temperature. In particular, for wavelengths below 470 nm the RIA depends both on the dose and on the irradiation temperature, whereas at higher wavelengths the RIA depends only on the dose. From the microscopic point of view the origin of this behavior is explai…

Effect of irradiation temperature on the radiation induced attenuation of Ge-doped fibers

2016

International audience; The UV-visible radiation induced attenuation (RIA) was studied in Ge-doped optical fibers, during X-ray (10 keV) irradiations at different temperatures. By comparing the spectra recorded in dissimilarly irradiated samples we evidenced the impact of the irradiation temperature. In details, we highlighted that, from a certain dose, increasing the temperature the RIA decreases for wavelengths lower than 470 nm, whereas at higher wavelengths the RIA depends only on the dose. Such findings suggest that it is possible to distinguish the irradiation temperature by comparing the signal at two different wavelengths. From the microscopic point of view, it appears that the RIA …

Comparaison de deux méthodes de correction atmosphérique des données thermiques de Landsat TM

1996

The high resolution of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal infrared data can be interesting in applications such as energy balance and crop water stress studies. However, surface temperature measurements are strongly affected by atmospheric effects, particularly by water vapour absorption, therefore a correction method is absolutely necessary. The impossibility of applying a split-window equation and the difficulty of having temporarily coincident radiosondes produce a slight use of Landsat TM data to obtain surface temperature. Vidal et al. show that in a zone with homogeneous climatic conditions, atmospheric correction can be evaluated by using energy balance equation and standard meteor…

Thermomechanical Behavior of Beams Covered with Viscoelastic Patches

2018

International audience; Infrared thermography is a non-destructive test method based on infrared measurement that provides a luminance map of the thermal scene observed, converting to temperature. The thermographic study allows a surface observation of the thermal effects in order to display the result as a film of the temperature distribution [1]. The present study focuses on the detection of volumetric energy sources in beams covered by viscoelastic patches.
