Terminology and French-Spanish business translation: evaluating terminology resources for the translation of accounting documents
2014
This article is the English version of “Terminología y traducción económica francés-español: evaluación de recursos terminológicos en el ámbito contable” by Daniel Gallego Hernández. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a series of terminology resources and determine their suitability to the practice of French-Spanish translation of accounting documents. First we identify the terminology needs of a specific group of translator trainees when facing business translation, as well as the resources they use …
Revisiting corpus creation and analysis tools for translation tasks
2016
Many translation scholars have proposed the use of corpora to allow professional translators to produce high quality texts which read like originals. Yet, the diffusion of this methodology has been modest, one reason being the fact that software for corpora analyses have been developed with the linguist in mind, which means that they are generally complex and cumbersome, offering many advanced features, but lacking the level of usability and the specific features that meet translators’ needs. To overcome this shortcoming, we have developed TranslatorBank, a free corpus creation and analysis tool designed for translation tasks. TranslatorBank supports the creation of specialized monolingual …
Intercultural Aspects of Specialized Translation The Language of Traditional Chinese Medicine in a Globalized Context
2022
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a very ancient history and its importance for human health has long been acknowledged worldwide. The significant role that TCM plays in the global healthcare system has been officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), which devoted a chapter to TCM in the 2019 latest version of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11). TCM, alone or in combination with Western Medicine (WM), has been recommended for various health conditions (Aung et al., 2013; Cai et al., 2015; Zhang et al., 2015) – including mild COVID-19-related symptoms (Zhao et al. 2021). As a result of globalization, which has fostered th…
On-Road Study of Fatigue Management Strategies in Long-Haul Truck Drivers
2014
The current study investigated what strategies long-haul truck drivers use to mitigate fatigue at the wheel. A group of 52 truck drivers participated in the study in which drivers’ fatigue at the wheel was measured by a well-validated self-rating scale (the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale) and the use of fatigue countermeasures by a diary for a period of two consecutive workweeks including day and night-time trips. Results showed that the drivers more frequently used fatigue countermeasures while fatigued at the wheel but most of these countermeasures, with the exception of caffeine, can be regarded as inefficient (e.g., opening a window). The results indicate that long-haul truck drivers resp…
The status of the species Pectinatus portalensis Gonzalez et al. 2005. Request for an Opinion
2008
On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and several key phenotypic features, it was ascertained that the cultures cited as the type strain of the species Pectinatus portalensis, CECT 5841(T) and LMG 22865(T), do not conform to the description, [Gonzalez, J. M., Jurado, V., Laiz, L., Zimmerman, J., Hermosin, B.Saiz-Jimenez, C. (2004). Antonie van Leeuwenhoek 86, 241-248]. The type strain does not exist in any other established culture collection or with the authors who described this species. Therefore, it cannot be included in any scientific study. It is proposed that the Judicial Commission place the name Pectinatus portalensis on the list of rejected names if a suitable replacemen…
5 210 sanaa metalyriikan tutkimisesta
2004
5 210 Words about the Theory of Metapoetry The term metapoetry refers to a distinct category of lyric texts that addresses directly or indirectly the issue of poetics. Although metareflexive elements have significantly increased in poetry, especially in the twentieth century, metapoetry has not gained the same attention as its narrative counterpart metafiction - now regarded as a well-established contemporary genre. This article aims at introducing English, German and Finnish studies on metapoetry. In English, the commonly used term is self-reflexive poetry, whereas German critics usually talk about poetological poetry (poetologische Lyrik). Metarunous (metapoetry) and metalyyrisyys (metapo…
El lèxic tècnic a la traducció catalana de l?Opus agriculturae de Pal·ladi : una aproximació als llibres de 'grammàtica' i 'medicina'
2017
In 1385 Ferrer Saiol, protonotary of Queen Eleanor of Sicily, translated into Catalan Palladius’s Opus Agriculturae (‘The Work on Farming’). This Latin work was widely known throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, and therefore a translation of Opus Agriculturae was wanted in the fourteenth-century's Kingdom of Aragon. A difficult aspect of Opus Agriculturae is its technical vocabulary. Being aware of it, Ferrer Saiol referred in his translation to his use of numerous reference books to undertake the best possible version. These medieval glossaries and vocabularies belong in his translation, explicitly as well as implicitly. We identify here books that Ferrer Saiol used for this version, …
Terminología y traducción económica francés-español: evaluación de recursos terminológicos en el ámbito contable
2014
The aim of this paper is to evaluate a series of terminology resources and determine their suitability to the practice of French-Spanish translation of accounting documents. First we identify the terminology needs of a specific group of translator trainees when facing business translation, as well as the resources they use particularly when translating annual accounts. Then, we select various terminology resources used in this context and evaluate them according to their needs. The results suggest the development of a French-Spanish dictionary of accounting terms adapted to the terminology needs of the practice of translation in this area.
Translation and terminology. Apropos of two Spanish versions of Dumarsais’ Logique (Madrid, 1800)
2013
Framed in the field of philosophical translation (lato sensu), this article deals with two different versions of Dumarsais’ Logique ([1769] 1797, Paris), both published in Madrid in 1800. We argue that these two Lógicas, which were translated by two different persons, had distinct purposes. This is evidenced by their respective bibliographical contexts and metatexts and by their translators’ use of different sets of Spanish terminological equivalents for the concepts that, as set out in the first few pages of his Logique, are key in Dumarsais’ theory of knowledge. In the first of these translations, which envisions logic as having an introductory role in the acquisition of scientific knowle…
