An easy approach to epistemology and ontology in computing theses
2013
In many research fields---notably social sciences but also in those fields where design, experiment-based science, and social sciences are mixed---researchers must often describe their epistemological and ontological commitments in research reports. The research literature describes those commitments in various ways, often grouped under research paradigms such as positivism, post-positivism, and constructivism, and described as "world views." This paper presents the bare bones of the ontological and epistemological questions in scientific practice. Ontologically speaking, subject matters can be mind-dependent or mind-independent. Epistemologically speaking, elements of research may be more …
First Year Computing Students' Perceptions of Authenticity in Assessment
2017
The problem of how best to assess student learning is a fundamental one in education. Changes to computer science curricula seek to emphasise teaching practices that promote deep learning through direct, contextual examination of student performance on tasks that resemble those of practitioners, rather than more traditional methods. This kind of "authentic assessment" is becoming more popular as it appears to incorporate employability skills associated with professional practice into the curriculum in a natural way. In this paper, we report on an investigation into how computing students themselves understand the terminology of authentic assessment. We give a brief summary of some of the sa…
Are they different? affect, feeling, emotion, sentiment, and opinion detection in text
2014
A major limitation in the automatic detection of affect, feelings, emotions, sentiments, and opinions in text is the lack of proper differentiation between these subjective terms and understanding of how they relate to one another. This lack of differentiation not only leads to inconsistency in terminology usage but also makes the subtleties and nuances expressed by the five terms difficult to understand, resulting in subpar detection of the terms in text. In light of such limitation, this paper clarifies the differences between these five subjective terms and reveals significant concepts to the computational linguistics community for their effective detection and processing in text.
Terminoloģijas problēmas tulka darbā digitālās mākslas jomā
2017

EU criminal justice and Italian law: investigating terminological gaps
2018
Legal translation entails a basic knowledge of the legal systems involved, familiarity with the relevant terminology and competency in the specific legal writing style of the target language. Apart from terminological lacunae and lexical gaps, the translator has to consider not only the textual conventions in the source language that are often culture-dependent and may not correspond to conventions in the target culture, but also the linguistic structures found in the source language that may have no equivalent structures in the target language. In this this regard, the EU carries this process to new heights for a number of reasons: it is a novel creation; law plays a central part in the ex…
Składnia tekstów specjalistycznych (na przykładzie niemieckiego języka biznesu)
2017
W rozdziale podjęto próbę kompaktowej prezentacji specyfiki składni niemieckojęzycznych tekstów fachowych i najważniejszych tendencji w niej obserwowanych. Omówione zostały najczęściej używane typy zdań, konstrukcje bezosobowe, grupy nominalne, frazy przyimkowe, konstrukcje bezokolicznikowe, strona bierna, werbalne frazy zdaniowe i konstrukcje imiesłowowe. Języki specjalistyczne …
