New Pharmacological Opportunities for Betulinic Acid

AbstractBetulinic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic lupane-type triterpenoid usually isolated from birch trees, but present in many other botanical sources. It is found in different plant organs, both as a free aglycon and as glycosyl derivatives. A wide range of pharmacological activities has been described for this triterpenoid, including antiviral and antitumor effects. In addition, several other interesting properties have been identified in the fields of immunity and metabolism, namely antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-inflammatory activities. A Short and Improved Synthesis of the Antiprotozoal Abietane Diterpenoid (–)-Sugikurojin A

An efficient and straightforward semisynthesis of the antiprotozoal abietane diterpenoid (–)-sugikurojin A, starting from the readily available methyl ester of callitrisic acid (4-epi-dehydroabietic acid­) isolated from sandarac resin, is reported. This optimized semi­synthetic route provides a convenient source of the antiprotozoal compound, in four steps from methyl callitrisate in 50% overall yield, for further biological studies.

Introduction: Novel hybrid combinations containing synthetic or antibiotic drugs with plant-derived phenolic or terpenoid compounds

Abstract Background There is a paradigm shift in chemotherapy from mono-drug therapy towards multidrug combination regimens. Natural products from medicinal plants may play an important role for the design of novel combination therapy protocols. Chemical Composition of Herbal Macerates and Corresponding Commercial Essential Oils and Their Effect on Bacteria Escherichia coli

This study addresses the chemical composition of some commercial essential oils (clove, juniper, oregano, and marjoram oils), as well as appropriate herbal extracts obtained in the process of cold maceration and their biological activity against selected Escherichia coli strains: E. coli ATTC 25922, E. coli ATTC 10536, and E. coli 127 isolated from poultry waste. The metabolites of the genus onopordum (asteraceae): Chemistry and biological properties

Onopordum is an interesting genus belonging to the tribe Cardueae (Asteraceae family), and the species of this genus are used as food and in the popular medicine of several countries. The present paper reviews all the metabolites present in all the species of this genus, reported up to 2009, and several chemotaxonomic consideration have been made. Furthermore, the occurrence in other genus, the spectral data, the synthetic approaches, the chemical modifications and the biological properties of the sesquiterpenes of genus Onopor- dum have been reviewed.
