Accuracy and accommodation capability of a handheld autorefractor
2000
Purpose: To determine the accuracy of measurement by the Nikon Retinomax handheld autorefractor and its ability to relax accommodation. Setting: Pediatric Section, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz, Germany. Methods: To perform a series of comparative measurements, autorefractor readings were obtained on healthy young adults (students) and on children aged 2 to 12 years. The autorefractor readings were compared with subjective refractions of the young adults and with cycloplegic retinoscopy of the children. Results: In adults, the accuracy of the handheld autorefractor measurements was comparable to that of conventional tabletop autorefractors. In children, the autorefractor …

Does the level of serum antimüllerian hormone predict ovulatory function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome with aging?
2012
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine possible prediction of regular menses with aging in anovulatory women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: Cohort. SETTING: Academic practice. PATIENT(S): A total of 54 anovulatory women with PCOS and 28 age- and weight-matched control subjects. INTERVENTION(S): Blood and ovarian ultrasound at baseline and after 5 years. MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Serum antimüllerian hormone (AMH), gonadotropins, androgens, insulin sensitivity, and ovarian ultrasound. RESULT(S): After 5 years, there was a significant decrease in AMH in women with PCOS and control subjects (10 of 54 anovulatory women became ovulatory after 5 years). There was a significant negative c…
A New Evaluation of Emergency Methods for Artificial Ventilation
1968
SUMMARY The effect of artificial ventilation by the exhaled-air methods (mouth-to-nose and mouth-to-mouth) and chest-pressure-arm-lift methods (Ho-ward-Thomsen, Silvester-Brosch, Holger Nielsen) was investigated in 11 anaesthetised apnoeic volunteers. The efficiency of these methods was assessed by the changes in arterial PO2, O2 saturation, PCO2 and pH. It could be shown that the exhaled-air methods ensured normal PO2 and O2 saturation in all cases, while the ventilation by the manual methods was insufficient. Even though normal oxygenation was achieved by the manual methods in some cases, others were extremely hypoventilated, with critically low O2 tensions. pH and CO2 tensions did not ch…
Carotid intima-media thickness measurement through semi-automated detection software and analysis of vascular walls
2013
AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare the semi-automatic measurement of carotid intima thickness (RFQIMT - Esaote, Italy), with the conventional method. METHODS: We enrolle 81 patients, mean age 46 years ±15, with no history of cardio-cerebrovascular events and we assessed the traditional cardiovascular risk factors. We examined the IMT of the common carotid artery with manual and RFQIMT method (based on the "Radio Frequency" signal), according to the ASE protocol. RESULTS: Semi-automatic measurement was on average lower than manual measurement (617 μm ±191 vs. 676 μm ± 222) with a statistically significant difference (P<0.01). In agreement with manual measurements, the values of…
Lipase elevation and type 1 diabetes mellitus related to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy – A multicentre study of 90 patients from the German Der…
2021
Abstract Aim Immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) triggers immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The relevance of lipase elevation remains unclear. Patients and methods Skin cancer patients with newly detected serum lipase elevation (at least twofold upper normal limit) or newly diagnosed type I diabetes mellitus upon ICI therapy were retrospectively collected at 14 German skin cancer centres. Results We identified 68 patients with lipase elevation occurring after a median time of 19 (range 1–181) weeks on ICI, 15 (22%) thereof had symptoms consistent with pancreatitis. Forty-seven patients (73%) had other irAE, mainly colitis. Discontinuation (n = 24, 35%) or interruption (n = 26, 38%) of I…
Impact of physical exercise on sensor performance of the FreeStyle Libre intermittently viewed continuous glucose monitoring system in people with Ty…
2019
AIMS To evaluate the sensor performance of the FreeStyle Libre intermittently viewed continuous glucose monitoring system using reference blood glucose levels during moderate-intensity exercise while on either full or reduced basal insulin dose in people with Type 1 diabetes. METHODS Ten participants with Type 1 diabetes [four women, mean ± sd age 31.4 ± 9.0 years, BMI 25.5±3.8 kg/m2 , HbA1c 55±7 mmol/mol (7.2±0.6%)] exercised on a cycle ergometer for 55 min at a moderate intensity for 5 consecutive days at the clinical research facility, while receiving either their usual or a 75% basal insulin dose. After a 4-week washout period, participants performed the second exercise period having sw…
The metabolic syndrome predicts cardiovascular events in subjects with normal fasting glucose: results of a 15 years follow-up in a Mediterranean pop…
2006
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular (CV) risk due to the metabolic syndrome in a 15-year prospective study of a Sicilian population. In the Mediterranean area obesity is highly prevalent, but epidemiological data on the metabolic syndrome are limited. Methods and results: Among the 1351 subjects enrolled in the “Ventimiglia di Sicilia” epidemiological project, we selected 687 subjects between 35 and 75 years of age; baseline parameters were assessed and subjects have been followed for 15 years recording CV events, total and cardiovascular mortality. The metabolic syndrome was defined according to both the Adult Treatment Panel III and the International Diabetes Federati…
The Use of Frozen-Thawed Platelet-Derived Phospholipids as a Confirmatory Test for the Diagnosis of Lupus Anticoagulants. Comparison with Two Commerc…
1999
Lupus anticoagulants (LAs) belong to acquired circulating anticoagulants interfering with phospholipid-dependent coagulation tests. Owing to the remarkable variability among patients, SSC guidelines recommend more than one test to detect and confirm the presence of LAs. However, this is an expensive procedure and greatly raises the work load of the laboratory. A standardised platelet-derived phospholipid preparation was obtained and platelet neutralisation (PNP) procedures with APTT and DRVVT reagents were performed on plasmas from 16 patients with LAs and from 41 control subjects. In comparisons, STAclot-PNP and DVVconfirm clotting assays were conducted. PNP by using APTT or DRVVT reagents…
Serum Concentration of Growth Differentiation Factor-15 Is Independently Associated with Global Platelet Function and Higher Fibrinogen Values in Adu…
2017
AbstractGrowth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) has recently emerged as a strong and independent predictor of cardiovascular events and mortality. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this important association remain speculative. This study was aimed to investigate the potential associations between the serum concentration of GDF-15 and clinical or laboratory parameters in a population of ostensibly healthy subjects. The study population consisted of 44 healthy volunteers enrolled from the laboratory staff (14 males and 30 females; mean age, 47 ± 11 years), who had their blood collected for assessing complete blood cell count, GDF-15, serum creatinine, albumin, cardiac t…
