Prediction of complexity and complications of laparoscopic liver surgery: The comparison of the Halls‐score to the IWATE‐score in 100 consecutive lap…

2020

BACKGROUND The development of laparoscopic liver surgery is slower than in other disciplines. Two different scoring systems have been proposed to estimate difficulty of laparoscopic liver resections (LLR) preoperatively. The aim of this analysis was to compare these two scores in an independent patient cohort regarding the predictability of morbidity. METHODS All LLRs performed between 01/2011 until 01/2019 were identified from our prospective institutional database. Patient characteristics as well as intra- and postoperative data were analyzed. Postoperative complications were graded according to Dindo-Clavien classification. Difficulty of LLR was classified using IWATE- and Halls-score. R…

Evaluation of the in-vitro cidal activity and toxicity of a novel peroxygen biocide: 2-butanone peroxide

2007

The monomer of 2-butanone peroxide is a novel peroxygen derivative with potential use as biocide in the hospital environment. The aim of this study was to test the biocidal activity of different concentrations of the compound against American Tissue Culture Collection strains from 11 different micro-organisms, including bacteria, mycobacteria, spores, fungi and virus, following the European Standard guidelines. Toxicity tests were also carried out following United States Environmental Protection Agency Standards. 2-Butanone peroxide exhibited biocidal activity at 0.12% against Legionella pneumophila, at 0.5% against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus hirae, and at 1% …

An efficient cluster-based outdoor user positioning using LTE and WLAN signal strengths

2015

In this paper we propose a novel cluster-based RF fingerprinting method for outdoor user-equipment (UE) positioning using both LTE and WLAN signals. It uses a simple cost effective agglomerative hierarchical clustering with Davies-Bouldin criterion to select the optimal cluster number. The positioning method does not require training signature formation prior to UE position estimation phase. It is capable of reducing the search space for clustering operation by using LTE cell-ID searching criteria. This enables the method to estimate UE positioning in short time with less computational expense. To validate the cluster-based positioning real-time field measurements were collected using readi…

Reading outcomes of children with delayed early vocabulary: A follow-up from age 2-16.

2018

Abstract Background Delays in expressive vocabulary have been associated with lower outcomes in reading. Aim The aim is to conduct a long-term follow-up study to investigate if early expressive vocabulary delay (late talking) predicts reading development in participants age 16 and under. We examine further if the prediction is different in the presence of family risk for dyslexia (FR) and early receptive vocabulary delay. Methods Expressive and receptive vocabulary skills were assessed at the age of 2–2.5 years, and reading skills in Grades 2, 3, 8 and 9 (age 8–16). The longitudinal sample consisted of 200 Finnish-speaking children, of which 108 had FR for dyslexia and 92 came from families…

Placenta-derived CD95 ligand causes liver damage in hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count syndrome.

2004

Background & Aims: The HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome is a life-threatening complication during pregnancy. The associated liver disease may be severe, and maternal hepatic complications may progress to the point that transplantation becomes necessary. CD95 (APO-1, Fas)-mediated apoptosis of liver cells is one of the major pathogenic mechanisms during liver disease. The interaction of CD95 with its ligand, CD95L(FasL), induces apoptosis and thus the source of the death-inducing ligand is critical for understanding the pathomechanism of liver damage involving the CD95-system. Methods: Sera from HELLP patients were analyzed and used in cell culture experiment…

Broad disruption of brain white matter microstructure and relationship with neuropsychological performance in male patients with severe alcohol depen…

2012

Aims In the last years, refined magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) methods have become available to study microstructural alterations in the human brain. We investigated to what extent white matter tissue abnormalities are present in male patients after chronic, excessive alcohol consumption and if these alterations are correlated with measures of alcohol consumption and neuropsychological performance. Methods Twenty-four detoxified adult male patients with severe alcohol dependence and 23 healthy male control subjects were included in the study. Neuropsychological tests were assessed for executive function, attention, memory and visuospatial function. DTI was acquired and pr…

Plēsonīgas cenas jēdziens un vērtējums Latvijas un Eiropas Savienības konkurences tiesībās.

2018

2009

Experimental test results on the local behavior of the typical Italian typology of hybrid steel-to-concrete beam are presented and discussed in order to provide insight on transfer mechanism between different components of the beam. Preliminarily, in order to investigate on the bearing capacity of the welding and on the local instability problems that can arise in the trusses before concrete casting, tensile tests on specimens reproducing different types of welded joints, and push-out tests on bare specimen have been performed. Then, the transfer mechanism between steel trusses and concrete is investigated by means of push-out tests carried out also in displacement controlled mode. Results …

The switch from conventional to atypical antipsychotic treatment should not be based exclusively on the presence of cognitive deficits. A pilot study…

2010

Abstract Background Atypical antipsychotics provide better control of the negative and affective symptoms of schizophrenia when compared with conventional neuroleptics; nevertheless, their heightened ability to improve cognitive dysfunction remains a matter of debate. This study aimed to examine the changes in cognition associated with long-term antipsychotic treatment and to evaluate the effect of the type of antipsychotic (conventional versus novel antipsychotic drugs) on cognitive performance over time. Methods In this naturalistic study, we used a comprehensive neuropsychological battery of tests to assess a sample of schizophrenia patients taking either conventional (n = 13) or novel a…
