Study of solid state kinetics using voltammetry of immobilized particles. Application to tetragonal to monoclinic transition in nanoparticulate zirco…
2012
Abstract The voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology is applied to study solid state reaction kinetics on the basis of the electrocatalytic ability of solids toward selected electrochemical processes. Measurement of the time variation of catalytic current for oxygen evolution reaction in aqueous alkaline media provides a direct estimate of fractional conversion of the reactant in the course of the reaction for testing different reaction kinetic models. This methodology is applied to analyze the formation of monoclinic zirconia and praseodymia-doped zirconia from tetragonal precursors. Discrimination between competing and successive reactions mechanisms is obtained for reactions inv…
Chemical Vapour Deposition of Pure Titanium Using a Heated Wire Reactor and TiI4
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 An experimental reactor system has been optimized throughout a series of experiments for making titanium tubes from an electrically heated titanium coil filament by a chemical vapour deposition method, based on the original van Arkel-de Boer -process. The titanium is thermally decomposed on the filament from vapourized titanium tetraiodide in a method not seen in similar experiments. The small-scale reactor is built for this purpose, and the associated systems and methods are developed to maintain the optimal conditions for a continuous metal deposition. A filament current control system is made of an Arduino micro-controlle…
Synthesis and antimicrobial screening of tetra Schiff bases of 1,2,4,5-tetra (5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl)benzene
2014
Abstract In the present study, novel tetra Schiff bases were synthesized by condensation of 1,2,4,5-tetra (5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl)benzene with different aromatic aldehydes. The chemical structures were confirmed by means of IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and elemental analysis. All compounds were screened for antibacterial ( Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-9144, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC-155, Micrococcus luteus ATCC-4698, Bacillus cereus ATCC-11778, Escherichia coli ATCC-25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC-2853) and antifungal ( Aspergillus niger ATCC-9029 and Aspergillus fumigatus ATCC-46645) activities by paper disc diffusion technique. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of …
High-Resolution Spectroscopy and Structure of Osmium Tetroxide. A Benchmark Study on 192OsO4
2012
Osmium tetroxide (OsO(4)) is a heavy tetrahedral molecule that constitutes a benchmark for quantum chemistry calculations. Its favorable spin statistics (due to the zero nuclear spin of oxygen atoms) is such that only A(1) and A(2) (T(d) symmetry) rovibrational levels are allowed, leading to a dense but quite easily resolvable spectrum. We reinvestigate here the ν(1)/ν(3) stretching fundamental (940-980 cm(-1)) dyad region and perform new assignments and effective Hamiltonian parameter fits for the main isotopologue ((192)OsO(4)). We also investigate the ν(2)/ν(4) bending fundamental dyad (300-360 cm(-1)) for the first time and perform a preliminary analysis. New experimental data have been…
The first excited singlet state of s‐tetrazine: A theoretical analysis of some outstanding questions
1996
The equation‐of‐motion coupled cluster method for excited electronic states (EOMEE‐CC) is applied to study the structure and selected properties of the first excited singlet state of s‐tetrazine. Adiabatic S1←S0 excitation energies obtained with large basis sets containing up to 270 functions are uniformly somewhat above the experimental 0–0 value of 2.238 eV, but nevertheless are the most accurate calculations reported to date for this quantity. The equilibrium geometry of S1 predicted in this study is in excellent agreement with another high‐level calculation, and moreover is quantitatively consistent with both the intensity of vibrational progressions observed in absorption and measured …
A hollow tetrahedral cage of hexadecagold dianion provides a robust backbone for a tuneable sub-nanometer oxidation and reduction agent via endohedra…
2007
We show, via density functional theory calculations, that dianionic Au16(2-) cluster has a stable, hollow, Td symmetric cage structure, stabilized by 18 delocalized valence electrons. The cage maintains its robust geometry, with a minor Jahn-Teller deformation, over several charge states (q = -1,0,+1), forming spin doublet, triplet and quadruplet states according to the Hund's rules. Endohedral doping of the Au16 cage by Al or Si yields a geometrically robust, tuneable oxidation and reduction agent. Si@Au16 is a magic species with 20 delocalized electrons. We calculate a significant binding energy for the anionic Si@Au16/O2- complex and show that the adsorbed O2 is activated to a superoxo-s…
Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Cr2Cu2(bpy)4(ox)5]·2H2O. An oxalato-bridged heterometallic tetramer
2003
A new heterometallic tetramer of formula [Cr2Cu 2(bpy)4(ox)5]·2H2O (1) (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine; ox=oxalate dianion) has been prepared and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements and ESR spectroscopy. The tetranuclear unit in 1 can be viewed as the combination of two terminal [Cr(bpy)2(ox)]- units with a central oxalato-bridged copper(II) dimer. The chromium ions are in a distorted octahedral environment with metal-ligand distances ranging from 1.944(4) to 2.064(5) A. The copper(II) centres lie in an axially distorted octahedron. The axial positions are occupied by one oxygen atom belonging to the central bridging oxalate anion [O(9)-Cu(1): 2.245(…
Theoretical Study on the Structures and Electronic Spectra of TCNE2−
2006
Investigations into the charge-separated states and electron-transfer transitions in tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) compiles have recently generated much interest. In this work we present theoretical calculations showing that the most stable structure of the dianion TCNE 2- has D 2d symmetry in vacuum as well as in the solvents dichloromethane and cicetonitrile. By means of the coupled cluster linear response, we compute the vertical electronic spectrum in both the gas phase and solution. The theoreitcal results, are compared to the experimental data and good agreement is achieved.
Electrocatalysis of the oxidation of methylenedioxyamphetamines at electrodes modified with cerium-doped zirconias
2004
The catalytic effect of monoclinic and tetragonal cerium-doped zirconias (m-CexZr1−xO2 and t-CexZr1−xO2, 0<x<0.10, respectively), prepared from gel precursors, on the oxidation of methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) and methylenedioxymetamphetamine (MDMA) at pH 7.0 has been studied. Upon attachment of synthetic specimens to polymer film electrodes, an oxidation peak near to +1.05 V vs AgCl/Ag appears that is unaffected by chloride ions and common interfering compounds, namely, dopamine, norepinephrine and ascorbic acid. The catalytic effect appears to be strongly influenced by crystallinity of specimens and coordination of cerium, increasing from the amorphous starting material to t-CexZr1−xO2 …
Separation of chelating agents as copper complexes by capillary zone electrophoresis using quaternary ammonium bromides as additives in N-methylforma…
2006
This study presents the use of quaternary ammonium bromides as additives in N-methylformamide (NMF) for the separation and quantification of chelating agents as copper complexes by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). The new quaternary ammonium bromides were synthesized in our laboratory and used for the first time for CZE applications performed in NMF media. The methods were developed and optimized for determination of six chelating agents (trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (CDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid (HEDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and trieth…
