Experimental results on the electroweak interaction

1999

Recent results from the four experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL at the Large Electron-Positron collider, LEP at CERN, and by the SLD collaboration at the Stanford Linear Collider, SLC, are reviewed. Analyses from an integrated luminosity of about 150 pb− recorded by each experiment at LEP, taken at different centre-of-mass energies within ±3 GeV around the peak of the Z resonance during the years 1989 to 1995 are available now. Repeated accurate calibrations of the beam energy lead to precise measurements of the mass and of the total width of the Z boson. These results are complemented by measurements at the Z resonance with polarised beams at Stanford. First results from an integrated …

The Matrix Element Method and its Application to Measurements of the Top Quark Mass

2010

The most precise measurements of the top quark mass are based on the Matrix Element method. We present a detailed description of this analysis method, taking the measurements of the top quark mass in final states with one and two charged leptons as concrete examples. In addition, we show how the Matrix Element method is suitable to reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties related to detector effects, by treating the absolute energy scales for b-quark and light-quark jets independently as free parameters in a simultaneous fit together with the top quark mass. While the determination of the light-quark jet energy scale has already been applied in several recent measurements, the separate …

Evidence for s-channel single top quark production in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV

2013

We present measurements of the cross sections for the two main production modes of single top quarks in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV in the Run II data collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb(-1). The s-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X) = 1.10(-0.31)(+0.33) pb with no assumptions on the value of the t-channel cross section. Similarly, the t-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(p (p) over bar -> tqb + X) = 3.07(-0.49)(+0.54) pb. We also measure the s + t combined cross section as sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X, tqb + X) = 4.11(-0.55)(+0.60) ph and set…

Combination of searches for anomalous top quark couplings with 5.4 fb−1 of pp¯ collisions

2012

We present measurements of the tWb coupling form factors using information from electroweak single top quark production and from the helicity of W bosons from top quark decays in t (t) over bar events. We set upper limits on anomalous tWb coupling form factors using data collected with the DO detector at the Tevatron p (p) over bar collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1).

Constraints on Models for the Higgs Boson with Exotic Spin and Parity inVH→Vbb¯Final States

2014

We present constraints on models containing non-standard-model values for the spin J and parity P of the Higgs boson H in up to 9.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. These are the first studies of Higgs boson J(P) with fermions in the final state. In the ZH -> llb (b) over bar, WH -> l nu b (b) over barb, and ZH -> nu nu b (b) over bar final states, we compare the standard model (SM) Higgs boson prediction, J(P) = 0(+), with two alternative hypotheses, J(P) = 0(-) and J(P) = 2(+). We use a likelihood ratio to quantify the degree to which our data are incompatible with non-SM J(P) predictions for a range…

Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in thepp¯→ZH→νν¯bb¯Channel

2006

We report a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 260 pb^-1. We study events with missing transverse energy and two acoplanar b-jets, which provide sensitivity to the ZH production cross section in the neutrino-neutrino-b-b channel and to WH production, when the lepton from the W -> lepton+neutrino decay is undetected. The data are consistent with the SM background expectation, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on sigma(p p-bar -> ZH/WH) x B(H -> b b-bar) from 3.4/8.3 to 2.5/6.3 pb, for Higgs masses between 105 and 135 GeV.

Search for the Higgs Boson Using Neural Networks in Events with Missing Energy andb-Quark Jets inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2010

We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb{sup -1}. We consider events which have no identified charged leptons, an imbalance in transverse momentum, and two or three jets where at least one jet is consistent with originating from the decay of a b hadron. We find good agreement between data and predictions. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c{sup 2} to 150 GeV/c{sup 2}. For a ma…

WγProduction and Limits on AnomalousWWγCouplings inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2011

We measure the cross section and the difference in rapidities between photons and charged leptons for inclusive W -> lnu+gamma production in egamma and mugamma final states. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, the cross section multiplied by the branching fraction for the process ppbar -> Wgamma+X -> lnugamma+X, measured to be 15.8 +/- 0.8 (stat.) +/- 1.2 (syst.) pb, and the distribution of the charge-signed photon-lepton rapidity difference are found to be in agreement with the standard model. These results provide the most stringent limits on anomalous WWgamma couplings for data from hadron coll…

Search for resonant diphoton production with the D0 detector

2009

We present a search for a narrow resonance in the inclusive diphoton final state using 2.7 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar Collider. We observe good agreement between the data and the background prediction, and set the first 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section times the branching ratio for decay into a pair of photons for resonance masses between 100 and 150 GeV. This search is also interpreted in the context of several models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a Higgs boson decaying into two photons.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in theZH→νν¯bb¯Channel in5.2  fb−1ofpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2010

A search is performed for the standard model Higgs boson in 5.2 fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The final state considered is a pair of b jets and large missing transverse energy, as expected from p-pbar->ZH->vvbb production. The search is also sensitive to the WH->lvbb channel when the charged lepton is not identified. For a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV, a limit is set at the 95% C.L. on the cross section multiplied by branching fraction for p-pbar->(Z/W)H and H->bb that is a factor of 3.7 larger than the standard model value, consistent with the factor of 4.6 expected.
