On singular integral and martingale transforms

Linear equivalences of norms of vector-valued singular integral operators and vector-valued martingale transforms are studied. In particular, it is shown that the UMD(p)-constant of a Banach space X equals the norm of the real (or the imaginary) part of the Beurling-Ahlfors singular integral operator, acting on the X-valued L^p-space on the plane. Moreover, replacing equality by a linear equivalence, this is found to be the typical property of even multipliers. A corresponding result for odd multipliers and the Hilbert transform is given.
Structure of locally convex quasi C * -algebras

There are examples of C*-algebras A that accept a locally convex *-topology τ coarser than the given one, such that Ã[τ] (the completion of A with respect to τ) is a GB*-algebra. The multiplication of A[τ] may be or not be jointly continuous. In the second case, Ã[*] may fail being a locally convex *-algebra, but it is a partial *-algebra. In both cases the structure and the representation theory of Ã[τ] are investigated. If Ã+ τ denotes the τ-closure of the positive cone A+ of the given C*-algebra A, then the property Ā+ τ ∩ (-Ā+ τ) = {0} is decisive for the existence of certain faithful *-representations of the corresponding *-algebra Ã[τ]
Hilbert space operators with two-isometric dilations

A bounded linear Hilbert space operator $S$ is said to be a $2$-isometry if the operator $S$ and its adjoint $S^*$ satisfy the relation $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I = 0$. In this paper, we study Hilbert space operators having liftings or dilations to $2$-isometries. The adjoint of an operator which admits such liftings is characterized as the restriction of a backward shift on a Hilbert space of vector-valued analytic functions. These results are applied to concave operators (i.e., operators $S$ such that $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I \le 0$) and to operators similar to contractions or isometries. Analisi e riflessioni sulle ricorrenze del costrutto causativo nell'Orlando Furioso che si rivela tratto saliente della lingua e dell'espressione dell'opera. Il poema di Ariosto pullula naturalmente di attori che, osservati dalla specola del costrutto causativo, si qualificano appunto come né sovrumani né subumani. Attori siffatti ne sono i protagonisti. Le loro vicissitudini costituiscono il tema dell’opera e ne sostanziano la trama. Che il costrutto causativo sia tanto frequente nel Furioso non è dunque un accidente e il dato è a questo punto comprensibile, perché integrato in un sistema. Il costrutto causativo è nel cuore del processo narrativo, ne è un motore.
On the existence of at least a solution for functional integral equations via measure of noncompactness

In this article, we use fixed-point methods and measure of noncompactness theory to focus on the problem of establishing the existence of at least a solution for the following functional integral equation ¶ \[u(t)=g(t,u(t))+\int_{0}^{t}G(t,s,u(s))\,ds,\quad t\in{[0,+\infty[},\] in the space of all bounded and continuous real functions on $\mathbb{R}_{+}$ , under suitable assumptions on $g$ and $G$ . Also, we establish an extension of Darbo’s fixed-point theorem and discuss some consequences.
Minimality via second variation for microphase separation of diblock copolymer melts

Abstract We consider a non-local isoperimetric problem arising as the sharp interface limit of the Ohta–Kawasaki free energy introduced to model microphase separation of diblock copolymers. We perform a second order variational analysis that allows us to provide a quantitative second order minimality condition. We show that critical configurations with positive second variation are indeed strict local minimizers of the problem. Moreover, we provide, via a suitable quantitative inequality of isoperimetric type, an estimate of the deviation from minimality for configurations close to the minimum in the L 1 {L^{1}} -topology.
Understanding the Significance of the Hypothalamic Nature of the Subthalamic Nucleus

AbstractThe subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an essential component of the basal ganglia and has long been considered to be a part of the ventral thalamus. However, recent neurodevelopmental data indicated that this nucleus is of hypothalamic origin which is now commonly acknowledged. In this work, we aimed to verify whether the inclusion of the STN in the hypothalamus could influence the way we understand and conduct research on the organization of the whole ventral and posterior diencephalon.
