Tissue-specific Expression of Two Peroxisomal 3-ketoacyl-CoA Thiolase Genes in Wild and PPARα-null Mice and Induction by Fenofibrate

2003

Our laboratory cloned two peroxisomal 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase genes in mouse. These genes were named mThA (mouse peroxisomal Thiolase A) and mThB (mouse peroxisomal Thiolase B) by comparison with peroxisomal thiolase genes known in rat (Hijikata et al. 1990, Bodnar & Rachubinski, 1990). In this study, we analysed the tissue expression of the two thiolase genes on wild and on PPARa-null mice.

The Interplay of Inverted Redox Potentials and Aromaticity in the Oxidized States of New π-Electron Donors: 9-(1,3-Dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene and 9-(…

2006

Derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene (9) and 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) have been synthesised using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions of (1,3-dithiol-2-yl)phosphonate reagents with fluorenone and thioxanthen-9-one. X-ray crystallography, solution electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry and simultaneous electrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance (SEEPR), combined with theoretical calculations performed at the B3P86/6-31G** level, elucidate the interplay of the electronic and structural properties in these molecules. These compounds are strong two-electron donors, and the oxidation potentials depend on the electronic structure of t…

Full inhibition of enzymatic browning in the presence of thiol-functionalised silica nanomaterial

2018

[EN] Darkening processed fruits and vegetables is caused mainly by enzymatic browning through polyphenol oxidase (PPO) action. Accordingly, we explored the potential of four silica-based materials (MCM-41 nanometric size, MCM-41 micrometric size, UVM-7 and aerosil), non-functionalised and functionalised with thiol groups, to inhibit PPO activity in the model system and apple juice. All materials showed relevant performance when immobilising and inhibiting PPO in model systems, and support topology is a main factor for enzyme immobilisation and inhibition. Thiol-containing silica UVM7-SH showed the greatest inactivation, and similar browning values to those obtained by acidification. The enz…

Effect of tea consumption on oxidative stress and expression of DNA repair genes among metal press workers exposed to occupational noise

2020

Abstract Several studies have shown that tea consumption is associated with beneficial effects on human health, which is mainly explained by the antioxidant properties of tea. However, evidence on the effect of nutrition interventions on oxidative stress in an occupational setting is limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of tea consumption on oxidative stress in noise-exposed metal press workers. The study sample comprised 24 metal press workers and 24 age-matched control subjects. Metal press workers were assigned to the intervention group consisting of a glass of jujube tea and a portion of raisins per day for 4 weeks. Full-shift noise dosimetry was perform…

Functional characterization of a peroxisome proliferator response-element located in the intron 3 of rat peroxisomal thiolase B gene.

2003

Expression of the rat peroxisomal 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase gene B is induced by peroxisome proliferators. Although a sequence element like a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-binding site is located in the promoter region of this gene, we previously found that this element is competent for the activation by hepatocyte nuclear factor-4, but not functional with PPARalpha. We describe here a new peroxisome proliferator-response element located in the intron 3 (+1422/+1434) that binds in vitro the PPARalpha/retinoid X receptor alpha heterodimer and confers the induction by PPARalpha in transfection assays. We propose a model of regulation of the rat thiolase B gene involving thos…

PPARα/HNF4α Interplay on Diversified Responsive Elements. Relevance in the Regulation of Liver Peroxisomal Fatty Acid Catabolism

2012

In mammals, the liver is the major organ of fatty acid catabolism. This pathway is involved in both mitochondria and peroxisome. While mitochondria breaks down fatty acids with short, medium and long carbon chains, peroxisomes are involved in the catabolism of very long and branched chain fatty acids, which are degraded by three enzymes: acyl-CoA oxidase, multifunctional enzyme and thiolase enzyme. The active pathway results mainly from a tight transcriptional control of these gene-encoding enzymes. Two major nuclear receptors that are highly expressed in this organ are involved in this control, e.g. PPARα (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, α isoform) and HNF4α (hepatic nuclear fa…

Microfluidic Synthesis of Actuating Microparticles from a Thiol-Ene Based Main-Chain Liquid Crystalline Elastomer.

2016

In this article the microfluidic synthesis of strongly actuating particles on the basis of a liquid crystalline main-chain elastomer is presented. The synthesis is carried out in a capillary-based co-flow microreactor by photo-initiated thiol-ene click chemistry of a liquid crystalline monomer mixture. These microparticles exhibit a deformation from a spherical to a rod-like shape during the thermal-initiated phase transition of the liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) at which the particles’ aspect ratio is almost doubled. Repeated contraction cycles confirm the complete reversibility of the particles’ actuation properties. The transition temperature of the LCE, the temperature range of the …

Talking about something real: the concept of truth in multimodal non-fiction books for young people

2016

AbstractWithin social semiotics we discuss how different semiotic resources alone or in multimodal texts are used to communicate truth. This is one of the parts of the multimodal theory that are least developed and discussed. The discussion on truth within social semiotics is mainly focused on the relationship between a corresponding type of truth that is common in natural science and a more everyday perception of truth. This can give an incomplete and stereotypical image of how truth is portrayed. This essay attempts to nuance the picture by suggesting that our theoretical conceptions of how we portray truth visually can be nuanced and developed by combining the theory of multimodality wit…

This is my truth, tell me yours: some aspects of action research quality in the light of truth theories

2001

Abstract In this article the authors introduce some aspects of various truth theories in the context of action research. The traditional ways of determining quality are based on the correspondence theory of truth, which, in their view, conflicts with the basic assumptions of action research. The pragmatic theory of truth seems to be clearly represented in the world of action research. In their opinion, other theories of truth can be productively applied as well. In addition to the classical theories of truth – the correspondence theory, the coherence theory and the pragmatistic view on truth – they discuss the truth as ‘aletheia’ (a Heideggerian view on truth), as Habermasian consensus and …
