Was Thomas Hobbes the first biopolitical thinker?
2023
Thomas Hobbes's name often comes up as scholars debate the history of biopower, which regulates the biological life of individual bodies and entire populations. This article examines whether and to what extent Hobbes may be regarded as the first biopolitical philosopher. I investigate this question by performing a close reading of Hobbes's political texts and by comparing them to some of the most influential theories on biopolitics proposed by Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito, and others. Hobbes is indeed the first great thinker to assert the supreme political importance of safeguarding life. Furthermore, this prominence of non-contemplative life is not limited to mere su…
“From Savage to Sublime (And Partway Back): Indians and Antiquity in Early Nineteenth-Century American Literature”
2016
This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. Such associations also rendered them suitable subjects for treatment by authors inspired to a large extent by the Romantic Moveme…

Thomas Hobbes ja pelon taloustiede
2013
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: new insights and guidance for clinicians to improve detection and clinical management. A position paper fr…
2014
Item does not contain fulltext AIMS: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) is a rare life-threatening condition characterized by markedly elevated circulating levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and accelerated, premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD). Given recent insights into the heterogeneity of genetic defects and clinical phenotype of HoFH, and the availability of new therapeutic options, this Consensus Panel on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) critically reviewed available data with the aim of providing clinical guidance for the recognition and management of HoFH. METHODS AND RESULTS: Early diagn…
Small angle neutron scattering study of the quaternary structure of haemocyanin of Rapana thomasiana
1996
Abstract Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were performed on a series of solutions of haemocyanin (Hc) of Rapana thomasiana . In a first series of solutions, by changing the external contrast a model of the molecule that is apparently in disagreement with electron microscopy (EM) measurements was obtained. The apparent disagreement was resolved by performing experiments on a series of variable protein concentration solutions in D 2 O. The physical parameters of the model, extrapolated to zero concentration, are in excellent agreement with the EM results obtained on samples more dilute than those examined with SANS.

Solitary keratoacanthoma involving upper lip: a diagnostic dilemma - case report and a brief review
2010
Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a benign epithelial proliferative lesion which frequently occurs on the sun exposed areas of the skin. KA originates within the pilosebaceous apparatus of the skin and may be solitary or multiple. Solitary KA can be difficult to differentiate from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) both clinically and microscopically. However, the clinical course of the lesion and its ability to self involute makes it a distinct clinical entity. Solitary KA appears on the vermilion border of the lower lips with some frequency. A case of keratoacanthoma involving the upper lip is reported presenting as an exophytic growth that resolved after excisional biopsy. Photo- graphic documentation …
Spontaneous tumour regression in keratoacanthomas is driven by Wnt/retinoic acid signalling cross-talk
2014
A fundamental goal in cancer biology is to identify the cells and signalling pathways that are keys to induce tumour regression. Here we use a spontaneously self-regressing tumour, cutaneous keratoacanthoma (KAs), to identify physiological mechanisms that drive tumour regression. By using a mouse model system that recapitulates the behaviour of human KAs, we show that self-regressing tumours shift their balance to a differentiation programme during regression. Furthermore, we demonstrate that developmental programs utilized for skin hair follicle regeneration, such as Wnt, are hijacked to sustain tumour growth and that the retinoic acid (RA) signalling pathway promotes tumour regression by …
